    Certainly wasn't making any money.  Between the bookie scalping your lines and the 25 cent telephone calls your $10 bet maybe netted you a $3 profit.

    Where is KeyElement?  He'll vouch for me.

    Don't forget having to drop 8 quarters into the pay phone in order to call the bookies in the city, or getting .20 lines going to 5 on MLB (lines like 5½ - 6½  or
    8 - 9 )  and having to wait until tomorrow's newspaper to see the results and if it was a west coast game,  the newspapers would not have the results, you had to watch a news show that had all the scores, not just the local teams. Or if there were "enough" games in the day time you could call the office who had all plays graded and scores faxed to them.

    Speaking about the office being open, before the internet you could only play with illegal bookies and only when they opened which was like 6PM until most of the major NBA/NFL games started.

    No betting before, or on props or first 5 or team totals.

    You had to meet a guy every Wednesday at some bar to pay or get paid.

    But in those days you could make great money on MLB just by taking the extremely dominant pitcher who would pitch 7 or 8 innings and just a closer. You could lay 180 or more on every bet, picking your spots of course, and still turn a profit. It was possible. That's how much starting pitching meant.

    @barneybeans

    Yup.  Totally different game being played now.  Starters would throw 9 inning complete games.  130 pitches and be right out there again for their next start.  Lines were commonly 9-11 or even 11-13 (+180 -220, +220 -260).

    @RebelTell2

    Well, acid was everywhere and cheap.  Do remember a Boston game with six of us on the third base line.  We all dropped a hit of blotter about two hours before game time.  Dwight Evans lined one over the monster into the netting and we all got up to cheer.  Except Steve.  So I said, "Hey Steve, Dewey just cranked one."  And Steve says, "Yeah, I'm still watching it!!!"

    @TheGoldenGoose

    In those days with the pitching situation if you had a 3 run lead heading into the 8th you'd win 90% of those games.

    To 5 MLB lines - a blast form the past:

    EV - 6
    5½ - 6½
    6 - 7
    7½ - 8½
    8 - 9
    8½ - 10
    9 - 11
    10 - 12
    11 - 13
    12 - 14

    I remember yelling out to friends after getting the paper, "Hey, Steve Carlton's laying 12"

    The pen is mightier than the pigs

     No lol .. only an idiot would think that...

    And you do need a little luck at times.. but no .. the key to winning is eliminating games, pitchers and situations.. you need to know the games not to bet ..

    Ah- the good 'ol days. I'm basically a .500 bettor. These days no more generally than $50 a game.I remember fiding a local through a friend-probably around 2006 that put his lines up on a recording and never changed them. You could bet up till gametime. I told my friend it wasn't a question of if I would win but how much. I played middles using Pinnacle probably betting $200 a game.I think over a year or so won about (maybe longer )20K. I used to answer the phones for a book and an affiliate said things were getting hot and to get any paperwork or $ out of the houise.I remember taking about 13 k to my parents to keep. They're freaking out -like where in the hell did you get this mponey-drugs ?I convinced them it was from gambling but everything was safe. I remember going to western union every other week cos we always lost offshore and won from the local.They prolly thought I was funding a terrorist organization. But alas-nothing lasts forever !

     The Sportsbettor and Other Stories---great title for a book. America has no idea what it's getting into with the legalization of sportsbetting. Perhaps a cautionary tale?

     I think it's all about the money. Don't think they really care about afflicted gamblers. They probably think people are gonna gamble illegally if they have to so why not get a piece of the pie ? Just like pot.....

    @Contrarian

     I agree. We could eliminate 80% of the property crime overnight if all drugs were legalized. Bringing the black market drug trade into the economic mainstream would initiate an even greater boom than did the tech boom of the 90s. Let the market control the price. Think of all the capital that won't be going into a black hole. It will happen, in time. Locking up drug users and drug dealers is as foolish as it gets. The only way to curtail drug use is education.
