15 years ago was the first season after the strike..... The 1st season with the CBA that has started baseball on the downward spiral it has reached today.
You choosing to only want to use the past decade is your pure Yankee bias coming to fruition.
Actually...what you complain about time and time again is the baseball salary cap. And in those years...the difference was not nearly as much as it is in recent years when they were losing.
In 1996 the Yankees ranked #1 in Salary with $6 million over the O's.
In 1998 the Yankees ranked #2 in salary with less than a million under the O's.
In 1999 the Yankees ranked #1 with $11 million over the Rangers.
In 2000 the Yankees ranked #1 with $18 million over the Braves.
So what was your excuses in 96 and 98? Jeffrey Maier?
The Yankees didn't win those 4 World Series because there was a strike. They won it because they had a very rare occurance and had 5 All-Stars come up in unison. The biased one here is you as you simply can't stand it that your crying on deaf ears. You complain about how baseball is unfair. It really means nothing. You call me biased when you are the one saying that the O's will be playoff contenders in just 2 years time with a "great pitching core" that has limited to ZERO MLB experience. You can't stand seeing 2 of the best teams in baseball in the same divison as your favorite team. You can't stand that so you're resorting to payrolls because it's the only thing you have going for you in any arguement. In all reality, what they are doing is fair. You admit that, and you hate it.

Keep living in lala land. I have never said or complained about a salary cap.
My stance from the first time I have spoken about this issue is REVENUE SHARING.
You are a Yankee fan you dont want to see a level playing field. You dont want to see a sport where everythign is equal. You dont know what building a team or proper management decision are about.
You are the one crying and have been crying for the past 2 years anyone brings up anything about how the Yankees are bad for the game.
The ONLY THING YOU CARE ABOUT IS THE YANKEES. YOU DONT CARE ABOUT BASEBALL. PERIOD. Any rules or changes to the game that would limit the Yankees unfair, built in, geographical, demographical advantage you cry about.
I could careless the Orioles are in their division. I FUCKING LIKE THAT THEY ARE. It makes winning and defeating them all the better. There is nothing better than seeing Yankee fans cry and get pissed off when their team of bought Stars, (thats right not home grown or traded for or any type of managerial/franchise plan) loses. They are a product of their location. No skill whatsoever to build the team. They profit off of being able to purchase any player they desire regardless of cost and THEY ARE THE ONLY TEAM THAT CAN DO THAT.
For you to not realize this is yoru bias if full effect. When a team comes in and offers $60 million more than the next best offer congrats to them but they are the only team that is capable of doing that.
They are bad for the game and are teh reason for its downward spiral and destruction. I never once said they are not playing in the rules or cried foul. All I have said is they are bad for the game and changes must be made.
So stop getting defensive and stop inserting and making up things that you claim I said but never did. If you dont like the fact that people are fed up with how baseball is being run and how the Yankees are making a mockery of the league by taking advantage of the rules in place/not in place then choose another team to be a fan of because its gonna keep happening until baseball changes how its run.

Ding Ding Ding
They were able to keep their core of talented youngsters that came up through their system. Something that small-mid market teams are unable to do nowadays because the Yankees have exploited the FA market and caused contracts to inflate to ridiculous levels for middle of the road talent.
Homegrown stars no longer stay with their teams that drafted and developed them unless they pay them handsomely. Because once they hit hte FA market and they are a star there are only 4 locations who can afford to sign them. And if the Yankees really want that player then there is no competition for them because they can offer more than any team for any player they desire without fair of having it blow up in their face and set the franchise back.

Of course...if you were a Yankee fan why would you want a a salary cap? If you were a fan you wouldn't want one. And don't bother saying you won't because I would believe that at all.
And it's not crying...it's supporting my team. I thought you of all people would uderstand what that is like.
I agree with you...and I've said so. Maybe a little flawed though. I LOVE baseball...but the Yankees are #1 to me with EVERYTHING ELSE a distant second. As long as the Yankees are still playing, nothing comes close to them in my eyes. I don't post recent acquisitions on this site daily because I feel obligated to. I do it because I love the sport and like to talk about it as much as I possibly can.
As I've stated over and over again...most of the players on the Yankees are home grown talent. The difference between them and ever other team is that they can keep the guys that are worth keeping. You probably would, but if Adam Jones continues the success he had last season until his contract is up, and the O's never make it past 3rd place, do you really think he would stay there if offered more somewhere else? Over 95% of Pro Athletes would NOT take a paycut to stay with a team. And I truly believe that. Damon and Bay are the most recent examples.
Now you continue to say that Baseball is getting worse and worse because of the Yankees. Last time I checked the NHL recently had a lockout. All I've heard today is about the possible lockout of the NFL for the 2011 season. And the NBA has had problems for years. You hear about Brandon Jennigns? He bought a cheap car and a cheap house near his practice facility with his first big paycheck. Why? Because he said that the NBA may be done in a few years and he's being cautious. I haven't heard about these problems in baseball recently. Have you? If you have...please give me an article link so I can be more aware.

Lets say they eventually decide to put a salary cap in baseball...the Yankees would still get more stars than other teams. With their history and being in New York, why wouldn't they? No team would be able to totally overpay other players so the difference in salaries offered wouldn't be that big if 2 teams were looking to obtain a big star. If you had the chance to play for the Royals for $2 million more than the Yankees...where would you go? I'll tell you...they'd go to the Yankees because they'd get a ton more in publicity. Look at Artest. He took a paycut to play with the Lakers. Why? He says to win...and I say that's part of it. If you are a kid...who's jersey would you rather get? An Artest Lakers jersey...or an Artest Rockets jersey? An average baseball fan doesn't know a lot about Adam Jones. But he's a pretty good player isn't he? What if he was the centerfielder for the New York Yankees? You think more people would know about him? I believe so. And there is more parity in the NBA and NFL also. The Pats have 3 Championships in the last decade. The Lakers have 4. The Spurs have 3. And in the NHL...the Devils have 2 and the Red Wings have 2. Same as the Yankees and Red Sox. I'm just saying...

Exactly...and you talk like it's their fault. Yes...they abuse what they have...but what should Steinbrenner do? Pocket the money, not put it back into the team, and not try to put the best team in baseball on that field every single day? If there is a guy on the market that could make his company better...are you saying he should pass up on the chance to get that player so someone else can have him and make it harder for his company to succeed?
Steinbrenner wants to win at all costs. Us Yankee Fans should not appologize for that.

At the start of a game there are most of the time 2 homegrown players for hte Yankees on the field to start the game: Jeter and Cano... sometimes Posada also
That is 3 players. Rivera is the only other homegrown player that gets significant time. Stop trying to use the reliever card to claim the Yankees have homegrown talent. Almost ever team in the majors uses homegrown talent to fill the back end of rotations and middle relief.
Brian Roberts, Markakis, Wieters, Reimold, Matusz, Bergensen are homegrown for the Orioles either in their starting rotation or starting line up. Guthrie, Tillman, Jones, Luke Scott, Pie, Millwood are all players who were traded for. Tejada, Itzturis, Wigginton are FA signings. Their bullpen is made up of pretty much homegrown players.
Red Sox: Dustin, Lowrie, Bucholz, Papelbon, Ellsbury, Youk, Varitek, Lester, Bard, Reddick all homegrown. Beckett was traded for and they gave up Hanley to get him. Lackey, Cameron, Papi, Scutaro were signed as FA.
NHL is only popular is the northern US states. NHL would be better served contracting and moving all the franchises from below the mason dixon line. Move those teams to Canada or places like Minnesota, CT, Maine, Michigan. NHL is not a comparable sport since it only is popular in certain areas.
NFL lockout has nothing to do with popularity or success. Stop confusing the two things with whats going on in the NFL. A lockout might happen because of contract stipulations and money. It has nothing to do with the NFL not being successful. NFL is the most successful and profitable sport there is in America.
MLB had $6.2 billion in revenues last year for 162 game season.
NFL had $6 billion while only having a 16 game season.
NBA had $3.2 billion for a 82 game season.
NHL had $2.4 billion for 82 game season.

Baseball had a 7% decrease in attendance last season.
Teams such as the Yankees and Mets had trouble selling all their seats and luxury boxes. If you think teams not named the Yankees and Mets did not have the same problems you are kidding yourself.
Both of these examples show there is something going on with baseball. It is not as financially successful or secure as you are led to believe.

Melky was for the last 3 years and this season will be either Posada or Cervelli. You also say that they don't trade for good players. Take a look at this link. They did a pretty good job last season in trading for role players. Nothing big...but some were pretty helpful. And that doesn't include the brilliant trade for Swisher. I also see you left out Pettitte...is that because he left and came back? Jeter and Cano are better than those guys mentioned as of right now. And out of everyone the Yankees traded to get an All-Star...they never gave up a true All-Star. The best they've ever given up was Soriano and they got A-Rod in return. Not bad. Don't even both with the Red Sox free agents being picked up because free agents is what starts the arguements to begin with.
About the NFL...what good is success if a lockout does indeed happen? So those numbers aren't bad. If the NBA had a 162 game season...it's not certain that it would hit $6.2 billion. It actually may lose interest.

Well the Mets and Yankees had trouble filling seats because the economy is in the shitter and they were charging out the ass for all the seats. If the people are getting laid off from their jobs how are they expected to pay for tickets when the ticket prices went up?

Baseball had a 7% decrease in attendance last season.
Teams such as the Yankees and Mets had trouble selling all their seats and luxury boxes. If you think teams not named the Yankees and Mets did not have the same problems you are kidding yourself.
Both of these examples show there is something going on with baseball. It is not as financially successful or secure as you are led to believe.
But the increase in prices on Yankees and Mets tickets made up for the lack of tickets sold. And the economy obviously had a major problem around baseball when it came to buying tickets.

I grew up a Yankee hater like most of the rest of us in Chicago. Fact is that there is no better standard for all teams in all sports to follow than the Yankees. They put there moeny where there mouth is....27 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!
If the dumb fux on the North Side of Chicago, who I root for and give hard-earned season ticket money to year after year..., aka. the Cubs..., followed 1/10th of the example of the Yankees, then maybe we'd be in the World Series at least ONCE since 1945, or maybe even win a World Series just ONCE since 1908!.
Hail Yankees and continued success.

I must sit in the crapper seats if I want to take my 2 kids to a game at either New York stadium. It wasn't that long ago when you could get box, loge or mezzanine box between 1st and 3rd for $50 - $60. NOW, DON'T EVEN THINK OF THOSE SEATS FOR LESS THAN $150 EACH.
Please don't respond with "Then don't go "
because baseball has always been a fan friendly family spectator sport.
As for the posters that have the smartass rebuttals, I have no intentions of trading insults.

I was a pure Yankee fan from pretty much when i started watching baseball in 88 to going to a bunch of games sitting in the bleachers till somewhere in 2005. I have learn to hate the Yankees ever since and I've had fun while at it. I don't know if the Yankees ruined the sport but baseball may need to include other cities. Yes there are less games in the NFL but they're always filled to capacity. If baseball keeps following the Yankees money don't you think that the balloon may pop. It pop in wrestling, it pop with players on steroids and it pop in you local neighborhood economy.
Attendance is horrible in Florida, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati just to name a few. You have 17 teams averaging under 30K fans a game compare to the Yankees 48K plus the fact that the Yankees seats and food and beer is more expansive than any of these ball club. Baseball clock is ticking just like our debt, baseball needs to control the Yankees spending before is too late.
Yankees are just a bad example is kind of playing baseball with the rich kids that wear nice batting gloves and cups and then there's the poor kids that have to share one batting glove for the whole team. Most of you will not understand this because you love the Yankees and you feel good when they win. That's fine but I was through a long time ago and very happy with my decisions knowing that i can watch the mets for a bargain compare to the almighty Yanks

Fuck parity and a salary cap. Im a yankee fan but i dont want a salary cap in any sport and my buffalo bills would be affected in a negative way. Probably the orlando magic as well which im a fan of. You make money let the owners who want to spend it spend it. There are too many nfl teams who dont do shit with that revenue. Besides its good when sports have a dominant team you can take aim at all the time. Nobody repeats in the nfl anymore and i think that sucks. I miss the days of the 49ers and cowboys. Yanks are great for mlb. People would want to play for the yanks anyways even if everything was even.

Baseball was a lot more popular in the in the 70s, 80s, and 90s than it is now. Baseball does not need the Yankees to be successful to make money. They need more parity where every team has a chance every year. That would at a minimum double the fanbase of baseball. They are missing out on rural America. They are missing out and alienating the small-mid market teams that built baseball and was the foundation of baseball. They are turning their backs on the areas adn teams that made baseball waht it is today.
The AL Central is one of the weakest divisions in baseball. The reason for this is because of unbalanced scheduling which helps the central division since it protects them from competing and playing the larger market, better teams on the east and west coasts.
i didn't say baseball was more popular, i said they've seen great growth, just ask the players, just ask the owners who write those checks, ask the rightsholders who write checks to the owners. baseball is now a billion dollar business, that is finally running itself like a poorly run corporation, which is much better than the way it was in the 60's, 70's, or 80's, when it was run like a local grocery store.
