That's not fair. You're going to penalize the Yanks for creating a dynasty in the early 90s? They just feeded off that and that is when their payroll started to jump dramatically.
And you can't blame the players for wanted to go for the money. Not everyone is Joe Mauer. Nobody wants to play for a team that has not shown life when they've played there. And if they can get more money to play for a team who wins...why fault them? Teams are a business. If you're in the Reds or Rays position right now, you have to spend money to keep your team atop. Why would Crawford want to go back to the Rays when the biggest addition they've made in the past 2 years were Soriano (Great) and Burrell (terrible)? They aren't making strides to say "we're trying here, you should come back". Obviously Jennings is their next Crawford...but why can't they have both?
The point of my thread was to point out that the Yankees payroll essentially guarantees them a spot in the playoffs every year. That to me really isn't up for debate.
If the Yankees don't want a team to get a player they simply overpay him......this creates an effect on salaries other players then command in free agency.
And I don't believe owners should "pocket" the money they receive from NY........that said, what does an extra $20 million in payroll do for most of these teams.....it would get KC within $110 million of the Yankees payroll instead of being $130 million behind.....point is, they aren't competitive with them regardless.
We'll never agree on this but it is an interesting debate.....I believe that the New York Yankees are bad for the game of baseball. The have diminished interest among many fans of the game throughout the country.....I still watch, but don't care. I played baseball and always considered it my favorite sport....not anymore. There is not competitive balance in baseball.
