Throw out his first two starts of the season, and John Lannan has kept his sorry team in every one of his games this season except for a 5-2 loss at the Mets on May 25th. So right off the bat a Nats backer pretty much knows that this guy is very unlikely to get blown up. In fact, this month, Lannan has gone from a guy you could depend on for consistent quality starts to a guy who's shutting teams down cold. He's stifled the Mets, Reds, and Yankees in succession, including what had to be a huge confidence-boosting win for the whole team in his last start in Yankee Stadium.
But it's not just Lannan who's pitching better. The Nationals are playing better, too. These guys were 30 games under .500 last week before suddenly pulling back-to-back upsets of the scumbag Yankees and then keeping it rolling with back-to-back wins over the bumbling Blue Jays. The winning streak was snapped on Sunday when Toronto blew up Shairon Martis for 6 runs in the first 3 innings, but that doesn't mean the roll is over for Washington. In fact, I think it might be a good thing that they lost on Sunday, because if they were carrying a 5-game winning streak with them into this Boston series, they might have the Red Sox' attention. Maybe. But as it is, I doubt the mighty Bostonians are worried at all about the NL's worst team.
Brad Penny is going for the Sox, but that's nothing to get excited about if you're considering the sucker price on Boston. Did you know that he's only held one team to less than 3 earned runs in his six road starts? And this is a guy who runs out of gas after 6 innings (if he makes it that far).
Clutch22, you've got to ask yourself this - why am I so interested in laying (what I think is) road chalk with a pitcher who's road ERA is well over 5 against a pitcher who's home ERA is well under 2?
You obviously would have the best of it with the lineups but the worst of it with the pitching matchup. And just as importantly, you'd be taking a road favorite who's not excited to be playing the lowly Nats, whereas the Nationals, fresh off series wins over two other good AL East teams, will be SKY HIGH for the challenge of taking on the best team in that division.
One more thing. That price you mentioned? Boston -135? That price sucks. Pinnacle has -127 and, as usual, one could do even better than that at Matchbook if one were determined to go forward with this deeply-flawed wager on the Red Sox.

It is not Penny so much for me as it is the best team in baseball against the worst at a decent price. Got to take a chance and I will never back the Nats
Suit yourself, but backing the Nationals against the AL East has been extremely profitable over the last three years. Washington has held their own, going 12-12 against this division while being underdogs in 20 out of the 24 games (and very small favorites in the other four).

As long as the Sox have professional hitters like Pedoria, Bay, Uklis, and Lowell......who wont try to hit a HR in that fairly big park I'll side with them. I hate it when teams try to hit HRs instead of gappers. Once you work the starter out of the game for the Nats its easy sailing. Don't the Red Sox seem waaaaaaaay too easy? If Wang was -200, why aren't the Red Sox up there, even if they are on the road?

MrB - 3 years ago was the only season since 2002 that the Red Sox didnt make the post season in (and if they couldnt win a game in Kansas, they obviously didnt deserve to). You think they're failing in that task this season?
