They need to know who the squares are lined up against (there always seems to be a Jose Lima type every year that the public loves to fade), so they can do the same thing from the other side of the equation.
Now, many guys do study the stats. A lot are fans, and watch a lot of games because they love sports. Just remember that the heart of what oddsmakers do is based on the money rather than on individual stats.
If YOU study the game closely, you can find edges that aren't reflected in the line.
*Look at ERA, WHIP, Strikeout/Walk ratio, Innings pitched per start to get a sense of who the best and worst really are.
*Look at recent form (always most important for me with pitchers) to see if guys are throwing the ball well RIGHT NOW or struggling.
*Look for news on minor injuries that guys are trying to pitch through. A lot of the worst performances on the mound come when a guy is trying to throw when he's not at 100%. Sharps assume a line is based on 100% for all players. That's why they always bet injury news. Anything less than 100% is value in their favor.

And by the way, serious fucking moosejobs on WAS and what looks like MIL. WAS misplayed a foul popup that should've been caught because Nick Johnson is the among the worst defensive first basemen I've ever seen in my life. The guy has no sense at all for playing the field.
Milwaukee's Trevor Hoffman rarely gives up runs let alone blows a save and did so tonight. And Villanueva has come out and completely blew and LAD is about to blow this one wide open.
