You want to say that spending is fine, then that is fine. But don't pretend like the owners of Oakland, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh have the same amount of money coming in as New York. Yeah there is no cap, and what's fair is fair, but don't knock smaller market teams and say they just don't want to spend. What they have proven is that they can, in a short amount of time, achieve the same result in a year without overpaying players. Smaller market teams don't have the same revenue and can't afford the luxury to shell out millions of dollars to players who don't deserve it like Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, and Jaret Wright.
1)Carl Pohlad Owner of the Twins, Net worth 3,6 Billion
2)Lewis Wolff & John Fisher Co-Owners of the A's Net worth 1.2 Billion
3)Robert Nutting Owner of the Pirates Net worth 1.8 Billion
Bring the correct information when you are arguing for the poor and unfortunate. Sorry, but as I stated earlier, the great Yankees once had empty stadiums, losing 100 games a year and did not have a cable station (local TV WPIX).

My brother lives in Miami and took my sister in law and 2 nephews to a game. They ran a promotion, 4 for $40. 4 Tickets. 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas and 4 programs in the BOX SEATS SECTION!! Never in NY my friend, never in NY!!
Braves do that thing too...Every Wednesday night. It's worth the price...but not as exciting as a Yankee game. Thats something the Mets should have done from August on...you know...when they were already out of it.
And the Yankees are treating the fans nicely. Yesterday they opened the gates at the Stadium so fans could watch on the big screen. No charge for seats...sit anywhere you like. Thats pretty classy. Sure it's still $5.50 for a dog...but it's the thought that counts. Not sure if they did that for the night games but I just remember hearing about it yesterday.

Dude, Carl Pohlad is dead. Way to bring the correct information. Why don't you show me the teams yearly income, not the net worth of some businessman who probably has money tied up into other endeavors.

VP, I know you have a cool Michael Douglas avatar and your from New York, but lets not pretend like your Donald Trump over there. You keep talking about big money this and big money that and saying others here are from small poor economies, when in all reality you try so hard to portray something you are probably very far from being. It's sad man. I hope you can sleep at night with the truth.
Ah DanTos, don't take it so personally. I know you like to root, root, root for the home team and all that but you know nothing about me as I know nothing of you. Let just stick to the facts of sports and not get personal, ok?? It's all good because in the end YOU must realize that we both will never make as much as the players and WE still have to go to work in the morning!!

I am from small market Wisconsin. I have been a lifelong Yankee fan. Why would I want to root for the small market Brewers. The commisioner of MLB used to own that team and his tight ass let many GREAT players go to greener pastures. I prefer to watch a quality product, and Mr. Steinbrenner isn't breaking any rules paying for quality!

Seriously? He died in 2009. What about last season, and the years before...you know...when he was alive. Not too long ago.

He died Jan. 6, 2009. His sons are running the team. Did you think they found a buyer in 6 months???? Come on Dude, you're making this too easy for me. If I told you that if you go to the Forbes list for each team and that their revenue exceeded their expenses then what would you say?? Why do you think the owners will NEVER open the books?? Come on Dan hop on board on the reality train!!

He was born in 1915. Do you think he was actively involved in the handling of the team at 90 years old? Just because owners "net worth" is in the billions, doesn't mean they have "billions" to spend on their baseball team. Carl Pohlad owned financial companies. Your telling me he is going to take earnings from other businesses, spend 200 million in one year on a team that only brings in 70-80 million? Does that sound like smart business?

As of 2008, the Minnesota twins ranked 25th in Net Value. You really expect them to spend like a top 10 team when they are valued in the bottom of the league?

Isn't that why you hire a general manager? And if he speant 200 million in one year, they'd be getting more than 70-80 million. Who doesn't want to see a team who wins 90+ games?

I wouldn't mind giving up the Bills and Jets... I'm a Giants fan. They are my main concern football wise.

The Steinbrenners were a huge ship building corporation when George bought the Yankees. He paid all his fathers debt and took the firm out of bancruptcy. And with the money from the Yankees, he REINVESTED the profit into the team. Again, if the other owners will treat it like a business and try to be successful and not like a trophy to hold up and say this is mine then too bad.

Yeah I don't know if you've noticed but the Twins have won 90+ games and have had successful seasons. That has nothing to do with it. Minnesota will never pull in the revenue of a New York/LA team because of the market they are in, no matter how well they do.

No but I'll take a salary cap, like the rest of the sports leagues. Then winning will come down to drafting, player development, and not just spending the most.

Should a Yankee fan even be considered a good fan of baseball, considering the spending advantage the Yankees have now, even over other big market teams?
Since I live in NJ and I personally know many Yankee fans and Met fans, I will say the answer is YES. Me personally? I can't get into rooting for Goliath. I was a fan of both teams since the mid-80's, until the Yankees finally figured out how to spend to win in the late 90's, and by 2000, when the Yankees won their 4th WS vs the Mets, I just couldn't get into rooting for the Yankees anymore. It was boring.
BUT ... for some reason, there are many baseball-intelligent Yankee fans in NJ who don't mind the advantage and they don't get bored. I don't know why, but that's the way it is. And by the way, most of the Yankee fans I know are not bandwagon fans. I actually have not even met a Yankee bandwagon fan in years. Maybe that just says I need to get out more, haha. Or, maybe all the hardcore Yankee fans who act like superior jerkoffs live in NY, and not NJ.

We only have cerebral schools here in NY. You know like Columbia, NY University, Cornell. But you're right if it didn't cost $500 a square foot for real estate we could turn one of our cow fields into a sports factory disguised as a University!!

Agree with a lot of what you said earlier, but picking the Phillies is a terrible example if you're comparing salaries.
For me Beantown85 once you crack the 100 million mark, you're not a "small market" team. The Phillies spend that much with the intentions of winning another World Series. You must apend money to make money.
