Yanks pull in tons from simply selling merchandise. They are in a huge market in NYC. People from NY travel to every State in the union for business reasons and thus their sports gear is popular everywhere.

Would you rather they make a ton of money and hoard it not spending it on quality players?

I would love to be a Mariners fan but they consistently suck and have no urge to win. This is because the owners simply care about filling the seats with cutesy commercials and family nights. So I follow Detroit who actually cares about winning until playoff time.

Anyway, good for NYY they actually keep a few players for most of their career versus a Matt Holliday jumping from team to team each year.

That being said I loath arrogant New Yorkers and low rent Philly dwellers. I have no dog in this game.

yes congrats to the yankees organization,  it is very much an accomplishment when an organization is able to provide that kind of payroll,  that organization deserves everything because they market right, they make great general management moves, and are an accomplished successful business.  thats what this is after all a business.  look at the mets, they have the second highest payroll and cant do shit with what they have.

Why are people mad because a team spends money on players??? is it wrong for a team to give back to their fans give them a reason to pay the money to watch the team... or would you rather the league be like the nats and pirates who can't get 5,000 people to fill the stands,
 the small market teams are small market because they don't spent the money they rather keep the money to their selves, and its not the Yanks fault the C.C wanted 160 mill, and like your all saying your "small market" teams couldn't pay him that anyway so why complain about something you can't afford, do you hate Bentleys because you cant afford them, do you hate the owner of a Bentley cause he could afford one there is no logic in you statements don't hate on a team that want to win hate on those that doesn't care... and you need to thank the Yankees anyway cause when they travel to the "small market" stadiums  they fill them up cause the people want to see the Yankees and the billion dollar payroll even though they didn't spent a billion dollars to get them they could easily trade the players and there contracts to another team before it get to a billion if they wanted to

This has nothing to do with being a jealous fan. I have nothing but respect for those yankee teams that won all those world series in the 1990s. Those teams were mostly built from the farm system up with a pricey free agent or two. When you spend more and more money each year eventually you will get to the top. The mets are a joke but add 70 million too there payroll and there a whole different team!!!!

If a small market team trys to make an offer for a big free agent the Yankees will just keep raising the price until the small market team has no chance. If it were up to all u guys we would have a 8 team league with the same teams winning it every year!!!!

Nfl is full of mediocrity. I dont care how popular it is. There are no good teams.  Teams like the yanks, lakers, red wings are great for sports.

Its a more respected league because every team is built from the draft and good decisions on small free agents and picks ups from the GMS.

Congrats to the yankees and their fans but lets be realistic if there was a salary cap there would be much more competitive balance. Now for the idiots who are going to say look at what the rays, rockies, a's, and twins have accomplished over the last few yrs, lets be serious! Rays had how many consecutive losing seasons and # 1 draft picks before they could even contend. Why should teams like the twins and a's have to bust their ass to be competitive and then lose their best players to high payroll teams and have to rebuild all over again. If there were a salary cap do u think a-rod and texiera would have both fit under the cap along with jeter and CC? Players go to teams for the money and no other reason why. Cant blame the players but if there was a salary cap, I guarantee u the best players would not all be signing with the same team.  Until the salary cap occurs, get used to the red sox, yankees, dodgers, and mets each yr outspending teams for the best players. People wonder why football is the most popular sport?

Thats in millions.. so the Tampa bay team took in $177 million.. and spent $35 million in payroll. Even if we assume that operating expenses were $100 million dollars (which is preposterous) the owners pocketed $42 million dollars - 33 million of it from revenue sharing.

Tell your small market owners to invest IN THEIR TEAM AND NOT THEIR POCKETS.....  simple economics... spend money to make money....

Yes they could have


They chose not to, they have the money, but are too scared of the investment not returning a profit!!!  The Yankees are not, Red Sox, Angels, etc......... spend money with no guarantee of a world series win.... You live in a bubble, and obviously don't have any knowledge of financial backround

URISS2302- The luxury tax is a freaking joke. Make a salary cap of lets say $80 million. Any owner of a team who is blatantly pocketing the money and not spending, then that team will have to find a new owner or relocate. Dont feed me that B.S. that the Royals got 30 million in luxury tax. What is that 30 million going to get them? Jack shit. If a player is deciding between the yankees and royals, who are u going to choose? The team that has a better chance of winning! Your right the owners are pocketing the luxury tax but then again what are u going to use it on. It will get u a few decent players but not enough to compete. If those decent players have good seasons they end up being traded away for prospects any way. The point is that 30 million the royals are getting will not make them competitive. You clearly missed the point before that a salary cap is what is best for baseball. If a team is not competitive to begin with, a player is still going to chose the high payroll team over the extra they would get from the crappy royals. For people to say teams can compete they choose not too, your either a fan of the yankess or an idiot! Why have teams bust their butt through the draft and player development and then be unable to afford keeping them when they are due for free agency! They are competitive for a few yrs but then what? Time to rebuild for another 5 or 6 yrs since the high market clubs bought the best talent. They say yankees are good for business because they sell out games. Imagine if there were even more good ball clubs to sell out games besides only a select few!
