Jon Heyman of SI.com, who suggests (on Twitter) that the market for Lee is heating up tonight.
Seven years is a "dealbreaker" for the Yankees, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who suggests the team would offer six years (Twitter link). Newsday's Ken Davidoff says the Yankees will likely offer a six-year deal.
Jon Heyman of SI (via Twitter) hears that Texas will not offer six years to Lee but expects the Yankees to do so.

By the way.........I understand that Grienke has had social issues in the past. Depression? Or Anxiety? Maybe both?
This isn't the Bronx Zoo.........................Grienke isn't Ed Whitson. Different team. Different culture.
AJ Burnett makes 82 million ....................He can't get anyone out. Get him some help.
Ask Javier Vazquez how he feels about that. He doesn't even have an anxiety problem...he just can't handle the pressure.
I think Greinke, pitching in the AL East, would be what he was in 2010. A 4+ ERA guy. NOTHING NEAR 2009...and what the Royals are asking for him is outrageous. They're asking price is for a guy who is will have an ERA around 3 (give or take a bit). Trading Montero for him isn't worth it imo. The fact that he has anxiety issues is enough for me to have him stay away. Especially when the postseason begins...you can't just all of a sudden handle the pressure if you're not comfortable with it.

Love what the Nats are doing! In order to attract and acquire big name free agents in the future, you have to overspend for couple right now. If they put a competitive team out on the field the fans will start to show (good market, look at the Capitals). This town is starving for a winner, and with the Lerners being the richest owners in baseball, I think its about time to start dishing out the money and making a statement. Although they probably won't land Lee, you can't help but get excited for the direction this team is going.

Apparently...the Nationals are willing to offer 7 years which seems to be a "dealbreaker" for EVERYONE else.
Thats what I originally heard from a report on MLB network and now like Steve Holt is saying 7 years is being discounted by the Nsts now also. Bottom line with Lee is money thats where he is going,my money would be on the Yankees as they really can't afford not to sign him with that starting pitching situation.

The Nationals as a team involves are now being discounted altogether
A source told SI.com's Jon Heyman Tuesday that the Nationals are "not in on" free agent left-hander Cliff Lee.
Well,
so much for that. ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported Tuesday morning
that the Nationals were gearing up to make a "HUGE" offer to Lee, but it
looks like we're back to a two-team race between the Yankees and
Rangers. It sounds like the starting offers will be worth around $23
million annually over six years. Talks will extend beyond this week's
Winter Meetings.

I think the 6th year gets him. He's playing for his final contract right now...he wants as much as he can get overall.

Gammons was just on MLB tv and said there are no 7 year offers out right now but there are about 6 teams in on Cliff Lee and over hte next 48 hours the teams that have real interest will be decided.
Basically said its Yanks, Rangers and probably 1-2 other real suitors with the Nats being one of them but didnt think they would splurge. However he said they have tons of money and you cant just add offense to win so with the Werth deal they might go allin for Lee also.

The Yankees are on the verge of making Lee a lucrative offer and are awaiting the go-ahead from Braunecker, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com. GM Brian Cashman says he's ready to get serious.
Lee now has two seven-year offers for $20MM or more per season, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link).
I wouldn't condone a 7 year contract for Lee as a Yankee fan. It would be a terrible decision...but it is the Yankees and they can afford to make mistakes if it helps them short term. So IF the Yankees offer 7 years...clearly I'll take it because we know what Lee will be early in the contract...but it wouldn't be "smart".

6 or 7 years to a pitcher .............a 32 year old pitcher
A 32 year old pitcher with back problems.
Zach Grienke is owed about 27 million over the next 2 years.
That's where the value is. Grienke would be a MONSTER in NY.
A MONSTER behind CC Sabathia.
Aquire and extend..............GRIENKE.
They're asking for Kyle Drabek (centerpiece of the Halladay trade) and Travis Snider (Jays' prized outfielder). They're asking for WAAAAAAAAAY too much.

It sounds like the Yankees made Lee an offer. Braunecker spoke to Cashman tonight and when the YES Network's Jack Curry asked if the Yankees presented a proposal, the agent declined comment and smiled (Twitter link).
