If the trade happens with Peavy the cubs will have a really strong rotation between Zambrano/Peavy/Dempster/Harden that's a pretty dominate rotation if you ask me......

If Halladay is on the Dodgers, Kershaw won't be.  That you can put money on.

Yes, but I have my doubts about Harden staying healthy.  I think the Cubs do too.  That's why they are going to stay hot for Peavy I think.  Cubs are fine with Marshall starting but if they don't acquire anyone and Harden is down then they have to go 1 deeper.  Maybe Samadzija, but the Cubs don't want to shuttle him back and forth.  There are some other options, but they're iffy.  Cubs would prefer to get Peavy and then use Marshall as the 6th starter if any of the 5 go down or need to skip, otherwise a long reliever.  He's proven flexible in that way.  That would be ideal.  Cubs have gathered the chips to do the deal themselves too.  Garrett Olson is a guy SD wanted.  Plus they got 3 good arms from Cleve for DeRosa.  Toss in Cedeno, Guzman and blue chip prospect Vitters and the deal should get done pretty easy if the Cubs can handle the money.

Easy there DEPECHE 2. What did Lily show you that impressed you. He was Horrible in Toronto and has been very incosistant with the Cubs(from start to start) Do you remember 2007 playoffs -6ER/4BBs.Career 4.40ERA. There are at least 40 pictures better than 4/5. Dempster barely won on the road and Blew It In The Playoffs -four runs and seven walks IN ONE GAME and Z-man didn't show with 7 Runs in his playoff game But he'll bounce back He is a stud.

As for the Sox, I guess we will have to wait and see what the young kids and Colon will do. But I like Buehrle/Danks top five.

Lilly would be one of the best #5 starters in baseball EASY.  How many #5 starters have won 15+ games for each of the last 3 years and have DD win totals for each of the last 6 years?  Come to think of it, I don't think there are that many pitchers with that kind of profile, period.  And look at Lilly's WHIP the last 2 seasons (1.14 and 1.23).  Please name me the teams in either league that have FIVE starters all better than Ted Lilly.

As for Dempster, he was one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball last season and had an ERA under 3.  Certainly it remains to be seen whether he continues down that path though.

A Zambrano/Peavy would be the best 1-2 since Curt and Randy you can say what you want about Peavy in the playoffs but if any team looks at their schedule with a 3 game series vs the Cubs knowing they'll face ZP, they know theyre lucky to not get swept.

As for Peavy getting traded, as a Padres fan, if I know for a fact that he's not going to finsih this year with the Padres, it would be smart to trade him during the trading deadline and hope we get a NewYork-esque trade like Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. No need to get rid of him right now since his value is down

I'm very surprised you guys would take Zambrano over Harden

Imo, Peavy-Harden would be the best 1-2 punch

I'll take Harden as long as I have a *when healthy* asterisk.  Pretty big IF.

...and there goes a couple of pieces to your proposed trade

Cubs acquired RHP Aaron Heilman from the Mariners for LHP Garrett Olson and infielder Ronny Cedeno.
Oddly enough, Heilman probably has a better chance of securing a rotation spot with the NL Central champs than he did with the AL's worst team. Sean Marshall would seem to be his main competition unless the Cubs add another starter. If they do pick up a starter, they're going to have an extremely crowded pen between Carlos Marmol, Kevin Gregg, Jeff Samardzija (another rotation possibility), Chad Gaudin, Heilman, Luis Vizcaino, Neal Cotts, Marshall, Michael Wuertz, Angel Guzman and Kevin Hart. Heilman looked like a candidate to close in Seattle if Brandon Morrow stayed in the rotation. Now Miguel Batista would be the favorite for saves.

If you can have the Beckett of 2007 and Lester of 2008 I don't see another tandom that can beat them. Both show up in the postseason as we all know is where it counts the most. I remember Carmona and Sabathia in the playoffs against the Yanks and got lit up. They servived that series and then got lit up against Boston. Great pitchers however not so much in the playoffs. Webb/Haren...not bad either but they are in the National League...enough said. We all know what a healthy Beckett/Lester can and have done in the regular season, especially against the A.L.East, as well as the playoffs.

Kershaw is untouchable.  And for good reason.

Billingsley could be had though as a centerpiece in a deal for Holliday.  He ain't coming back when his contract expires anyways so they might as well try and get some value for him now.

HA, Ha. You're such a clown. Do you know how much the Cubs are paying They're number five starter? TEN Million bucks and there always seems to be an asterisk beside some Cubbies name. Lilly might be the most expensive five start in MLB. Seems like a waste of money. But yeah who cares because when they playoffs come, where he gonna be, same place Marquis was. Especially when help is needed elsewhere.

Beckett one of the greatest big game pitchers of all time I will give you that. Lester is good but very debatable as 2nd best starter in the league.

Hey Walter depeche knows a hell of a lot more about baseball then you do. Who is your team? Let me know so we can poke holes in their strategy. Love to listen to aholes mouth off about stupid shit. Every team in the league would like to Have Ted Lilly as a fith starter. Also he might return to form and then what are you going to say?

Walter, get a clue, Lilly is the #4 starter....he's #5 only if the Cubs get Peavy.  His salary only shows how deep the Cubs rotation is.  I don't think he is a bad salary at 10 mil for what he produces.

Do you realize how awsome Doc really is?  If he played in the NL West i am sure his ERA would be around 2.50 with a decent defense.  He is a top 3 pitcher in all of baseball .... Kershaw has potential yes but he is nowhere even close to where Doc is and his upside might not even sniff where Doc is.  The trade would start with Kershaw and one of Kemp or Eithier .... and if you don't think that's legit you don't know baseball.
