Thats what I was wondering as well. Dirt has to be a good thing because these two are clearly the best 1-2 punch right now. Others are close but I dont think you can realistically make an argument for any other duo.
These two went a combined 38-15 last year. Webb had a 3.30 era while Haren had a 3.33 era. Both had a WHIP of 1.20 or less. Both were workhorses with over 200 innings each and they combined for nearly 400 strikeouts. They were on different teams the year before but went a combined 33-19 and both had sub 3.10 era's with 1.20 whip's and both pitched 220+ innings.
Others mentioned...
Beckett/Lester - Beckett went just 12-10 and had an era over 4 last year. Since coming to boston only 1 of his 3 years have been #1 or #2 starter type years.
Lincecum/Cain - Among other things, Cain went 7-16 two years ago and 8-14 last year.
CC/Burnett - Burnett has won more than 12 games once in his career and he is always hurt. He has been right around a 4 era each of the last 3 years and sports 1.30+ whip in 2 of his last 3 years.
CC/Wang - Wang is coming off a major injury and sported a 4+ era and 1.30+ whip in his 15 starts last year. He does win so I will give him that and I think this combo is #2 behind Webb/Haren.
Billingsley/Kershaw - Kershaw has one year in the league, he's a .500 pitcher, with a 4.26 era and 1.50 whip
Guthrie/Liz - obviously a joke...at least I hope so
Lee/Carmona - Carmona has had one good year and is coming off a year where he sported a 5.44 era and 1.62 whip.
Lackey/Escobar - Escobar is one of the most underrated pitchers in the game, but he didnt even throw a pitch in the big leagues last year.
Hernandez/Morrow - I think this was a suggestion for the future and not right now as Morrow has only started 5 games in his career.
Yes the Guthrie/ Liz part was definantly a joke......This clown is on here talking about how good the Orioles team will be in 3 years so I figured those 2 guys had to be on it

Yea because Guthrie/Tillman or whomever your #2 pitcher is, is soooo much better than Webb and Haren. ![]()
Sabathia/Burnett if they are both healthy all season long but I don't see that so I have to go with one of the 4.
Webb/Haren
Beckett/Lester
Hamels/Lowe
Shields/Garza(If he repeats his previous season)

Yea...typo and brain lapse. I was thinking of Lowe being looked at by the Phillies earlier in the off-season. But Lowe and Jurjjens may be something to look at because Jurjjens has impressed me.

but if Matt Cain gets some run support than LiceCain is easily the best 1-2...

I'll take Peavy-Harden over Peavy-Zambrano. The Cubs should really make that trade happen. If they add Peavy that will give them as good of an oppurunity as any to end the drought.

With Hardens injury history they will always be worried about him even when he is 100% healthy. The less pitching for him the better so its good though that he isnt pitching in the WBC. Zambrano is a workhouse, he can pitch in it, he's just a head case which is probably why he was so screwed up. Harden-Peavy-Zambrano is flat out nasty. Not to mention Dempster-Lilly as your 4-5. That would be the best pitching staff in the game. Then you combine that with Marmol shutting the door and a pretty damn good offense with Soriano-A Ram-D Lee-Soto, I wouldnt want to play that team in the playoffs. They would be dominant on the pitching side with Harden and if he goes down they are still pretty damn good. The Cubs owe it to their fans to make a Peavy deal happen.

Well I thought after they picked up Harden last year that that would make them the team to beat but I was way wrong.....
