For those of you who are not familiar with Daneish's betting strategy, he usually takes two horses and wheels them up and down in the exacta.

    3-4/all and all/3-4.

He says he has used this strategy exclusively for the past 25 years and rarely bets trifectas and never bets on a superfecta, and doesn't play Win, Place or Show. EXACTAS ONLY.

I have to admit, that I was skeptical about this strategy, particularly without monitoring the exacta payouts in each race and getting caught dick in hand in races when the fields are short. But, I find myself discussing this strategy with Mikeyp every time I have the right horse with the wrong horse on top or underneath.

Hell, I admit it, I am in this game for big payoffs and often become swayed more often than not with perceived value, meaning that I wager on horses at sizeable odds and watch them finish 3rd, 4th or 5th. Well, I get satisfaction for picking a longshot that had a chance, but then I am not cashing enough.

This has been discussed over and over, that many of us in here are fine handicappers but horseshit bettors, meaning we might have the right horse but with the wrong combinations in the exotics.

But, I'll go Daneish one further and say that with the "right horses" the trifecta and superfecta can be very expensive but very profitable. Hitting the all button in the third and/or fourth part of the wheel is essential, just like with his exacta strategy, particularly in races where there are large fields.

If, and only if, I have a substantial bankroll, what if I use Daneish's system but play the tri and super with one or two selections on top, and then back those bets up with the exacta he suggests with the top choices under the field.

    Example in a 10-horse field…

    $1 trifecta 3-4/all/all $200
    $10 exacta all/3-4   $200

If the favorites run out then you're laughing. If the favorites constantly hit the board then you're still offsetting some of your losses, particularly when the faves run third.

I am not advocating playing it that way in every race, but in well-balanced contentious fields with money well spread on the board, wouldn't that be a nice way to enhance value?

Basically, if the $1 tri pays $400 or the exacta yields $40, you break even. If either pays more than that, then you have a chance at a substantial profit.

When I used the all button in the BC Classic at Churchill last year and Giacomo finished 4th, I was rewarded with a $8,786.20.

I failed to say, that I believe Daneish is a fine handicapper and I am close to converting to his system!

i follow daneish picks every week....though my bankroll doesn't allow me the freedom to tail his plays, i look on with definite interest......

i've been trying to work out a similar idea , but way scaled down......i use outsiders with contrasting styles with my key horses, allowing me to drop out mostly speed types who will get crushed by the pace.....1st month went pretty good.....then i lost the mojo involved in picking outstanding win types as weather and track conditions altered biases.....

your tri idea clearly is viable except for.....most tracks are raping tri and super players for 25% or more...and an unwanted partner in uncle sam joins ya if ya catch a big one.....

alsways enjoy your insightful posts...keep them coming

Hey Muck, good to see you, thanks for the write-up.  Using my strategy, I decided to start wheeling because I got so tired of running 1st & 3rd, I could have 4 horses under my top pick and damned if none would run 2nd, so, I said screw it, it's going to be all wheeling.  I sometimes hit the exacta and lose money, but it's better than tearing up tickets, and as you know, I don't play favorites, sometimes I get pounded at the windows because other handicappers see what I do and bet the hell out of the horses I pick, but as you see my previous threads, the payoffs are usually very good, no complaints here, but with my strategy I admit, you do need a large bankroll, this is not for the timid bettor, but this is the way I play, and I play what I post, I've already got 2 "uncle sam" exactas this year and they paid off on $1 bets, and I bet much more than $1 wheels, this thread should help the "newbies" who always pop in my posts now and then wondering how I wager, thanks guys, later.

Hi Phat, you're correct with the trifectas and superfectas, almost everything I post that wins, the exacta is usually in the high return range, if I played trifectas and superfectas, almost everything would be an "uncle sam", I don't want the hassle of W2-G's, I'm not greedy, that's why it's "exactas only" with me, later.

I have a question for Daneish:  Do your picks consist of the two horses that you think will finish first (or second per the exacta strategy) or are they the horses that you think will be overlays in the exacta pool.  Wondering since your picks come out before any betting has taken place.  If you play your top horses, how do deal with the betting when a top horse gets bet way down to low odds...dont bet, bet smaller, or hope that a horse with long odds from the field hits the other half of your exacta?

I sometimes incorperate Danes nyra picks in my exotics or pick 3 & 4& pick 6 tickets and his Cal picks also ---I try to limit myself to these tracks only now ,I cant afford to spread myself out with too many tracks ,
Iam sure when I hit the pick 6 in the future Danes picks may very well be the ice breaker for me..!!!

I always play $1 tris because I also am trying to stay under Sammy's limit. My $2 super hit was actually (2) $1 supers, but I always save the losing tickets and that way I can offset the bigger tallies that come less frequently than the losses.

To Spotty…I believe Daneish always looks for possible winners or second-place finishers with value, not just winners. He may hit fewer races but the payoffs are very appealing.

Hi Spotty, I usually handicap only on weekends and holidays, I buy the past performances the day before, it covers usually about a dozen tracks, I look for big fields, although I've had fields of 14 go down to fields of 5 thanks to the weather and late scratches, I can't control that, I look for horses I think will improve and be a price, sometimes the favorite will beat my picks but mine will run 2nd and that's where the good payoffs come from, of course, my picks do win too and you'll get a longshot for 2nd and really enhance the payoff, check out my previous threads, all the win & place prices + the exacta payoffs are listed.  Naturally if I get hit with a lot of late scratches and the fields are 7 or less, I usually don't bet the 2nd spot, I just wheel them on top, you have to use some common sense when it comes to field sizes.  Always wager in $1 denominations, this way if an exacta pays over $600, you get half and don't get a W2-G, I got stung this way when an exacta paid over $2,000 awhile back, but, you go with the flow.  I post my picks the night before, usually very late that night, (Friday, Saturday, and a night before a holiday), and I place my bets around noon the next day, I don't have enough time to get the late changes, so, if there are any scratches, I just get
a refund on the scratched horses.  The only way you see short payoffs on my picks is if the public bets them heavily because I don't play favorites, you'll never make money playing favorites, hope this helps, later.

I disagree with Daneish's betting strategy. For me this game is all about "Value" I would never say that I wouldn't bet favorites. What if you think the favorite should go off at 6/5 and his odds end up 5/2?? Also I think it is wrong to place the same value on all the horses in a race. Daneish are you saying that the horse you like 3rd best has as much of a change to finish 1-2 as your 9th or 10th choice in the race?? Thats the way you are betting. With the same money as Daneish is using I would rather toss out 2-3 horses, and bet more money on the horses I think will end up in the money. I might not hit as many exactas, but I will have the one's I hit for multiple times. The strategy for Tri's would be a little different. If I like a mid or long price horse, I might hit the "all" button for third. I guess we just disagree.

If you don't see value in my previous threads, you're in the wrong game.  I look for value in the horses I bet, if I'm handicapping a race and I come up with the favorite, I simply DO NOT BET THE RACE, of course favorites are going to win, my picks when I post ARE NOT the favorite, they may get bet down to favoritism, but they are not the favorite when I post them.  Like I tell everyone else who is skeptical, you need a good sized bankroll, look at my previous threads, check out the payoffs, go on your own from there, this is the way I bet, this is what I do, draw your own conclusions, keep your tri's and supers, doubles, etc., I'm not telling you how to wager, this is the way I wager and that's how I pick, post and wager, this is my way, do it your way, I've found this is the most profitable to me and I will continue to do it this way.

One other thing Quietman, I had such a hard time handicapping the Derby 2 years ago when Barbaro won it, I was chastised for wheeling 5 horses up and down, I bet over $400 into the race but showed a $230+ profit, yet the idiot that bad mouthed me tore up his tickets, so, who got the last laugh?  It's a tough game.

Do you feel that your 9th or 10th choice in the race, has the same chances of as your 3rd choice??My comments are not a knock, just a comment on your betting strategy.

I don't have a 9th or 10th choice, when I handicap a race, I try to come up with 2 horses that I think will provide a decent effort and at a price, if I handicap a race and come up with more than 2 horses, I pass on the race altogether.  I understand your comments, not taking anything personal, I value yours or anybody else's opinions and comments, that's what this forum is for, when you look at my posts, those 2 horses I give a solid chance to comeback with a good price for 1st or 2nd, sometimes they run 1st and 2nd and you get the exacta twice, all I stress is that they are not favorites when I post them, however, the public sometimes sees what I see and they get bet heavily thus killing the payoff, I can't control that, just do what you feel comfortable with, everyone wagers differently, later.

Since we are discussing stategy, I let you guys pick this one apart.  I exacta box my top overlay with the post time favorite.  I once read that the post time favorite wins or places 55% of the time, so I figure about half the time my exacta is in play and since its boxed with what I feel is the biggest overlay, I am getting some value.  I usually play my top overlay to win also.  My average ticket would be $10 win and $5 ex box.  I normally lay off if the exacta will pay is low.  Not sure if this strategy is any good, but I have been having some sucess with it and since you have a fave in the ex box it hits frequently enough that I dont go through very long dry spells.  Unfortunately I have not separated the profit/loss from the bet to win  and the ex. box in order to get a good idea of where my profits are coming from.  Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Sorry, I don't agree. I am not a big fan of a strategy that says you "Always" do something. This is a game of opinions, if you are comfortable finding the top overlay in a given race, then you should trust your own opinion on if the post time favorite. Sometimes you should box him, other times toss him out. IMO.

Just wanted to say I've enjoyed this discussion; I think whatever style you play, as long as you profit, that's the name of the game.  I'm basically a win-place bettor, and I've been told by several old-timers that betting on the nose is the only way to go, but if my 17-1 shot runs second by a neck, I'll take the $13 to place.  I've been following daneish's picks/results the last few weeks, really had a good day Sunday it seems.  Hopefully with saratoga/del mar starting up this forum will start hoppin' again.

in my opinion.......when chalk wins, its usually because the race ran as it looked on paper,,,therefore usually one of the other bet horses will join the fave in a shitty exacta........the value of racing occurs when the race itself falls apart from the way it reads........i like daneishes ideas there, i can't count the times my longshot got beat, not by the fave  but another bomb only bigger, when the faves looks beatable to me, is when i look for that nice priced runner. it seems silly to then bet him with the chalk i already disdain.......

That's an excellent point phat. There are going to be several races each day where the race "falls apart" and the inexplicable happens.

I truly believe that Daneish's system will work extremely well in lower-level claiming races where horses who have "no business being in the race" on paper, but somehow run well. That's where a lot of big prices occur.

Randomness is a HUGE part of this game and this strategy takes advantage of that.i at first hate the idea of assigning the same value to each horse as you do any time you wheel, but i have to admit that there are many many times that horses fill out the board that dont make my contender list and i just shake my head.my guess is about 25% but sometimes it feels higher than that. i may not use this system but it has made me think to maybe include more for less as a hedge. good luck

Muck & Phat, you are so right, "claim is the name of the game", I'd say 80% of my picks are claimers, these are races where the owner might want to dump his horse, the horse has a few kinks, not as healthy as they should be, drop the horse in class in hopes it gets claimed and wins, collects both ways, etc., and another reason why I went to my wheel system, how many times have you handicapped a race and see that the horse is a definite closer and the asshole jockey puts the horse on the lead and he folds like a suitcase and finishes off the board and vice-versa.  That's why before I post, I handicap and try to figure out who could be close to pace or stalk and one who has a good late kick, it doesn't always work that way but I have 2 shots to win or run second, and it's usually at a price, I use other angles too but this is how I try to finalize my picks, stalker/closer,  I try to have my horses stick around til the finish, doesn't always work though, you get bad rides/trips, poor break from the gate, trouble loading into the gate, sweating/nervous horses, a lot can go wrong, that's why I pick 2 horses per race, but sometimes that doesn't work either, later.

All I know is that even when I don't agree with Dane's picks, I might throw his horses in my wheel because I know he studies hard. More times than not, I've won...and with some awesome payouts.

It's like following Muckers tri bets, which sometimes look goofy, but the guy can hit the big casino...like his Giacomo Super in the Derby.

They are a lot of fine points here

This is daneish betting strategy and it works for him and he will bet it as long as he lives
And He has hit some nice ex’s

But how many horse players would bet $2 ex wheels and invest

    $88 for 12 horse field
    $72 for 10 horse field
    $64/9
    $56/8

For A $2 payout?.. Regardless of the outcome
