In some of the small quarter horse tracks sometimes a place payout will pay almost as much as a win payout. At Retama on July 1, race 4, win paid $3.80 and place payed $3.20 on the #5 horse. In race 9 win paid $6.00 and place paid $6.80 on the #6 horse. I happens pretty often at these little tracks but it's usually not that extreme. It used to happen at the big thoroughbred tracks a long time ago before Ziemba's book came out. Unfortunately the pools are too small to really bet big money or you would crush your own payout down.
