I still don't think you can reasonably fold there.

If he has an A, he thinks at worst it's a split pot on a board of AA88X. And maybe he thinks you'd call with an 8 with you thinking he's on a stone cold bluff and your sucker's boat is good. 

If he's a complete rock and never plays a hand and raised for the first time after 2 hours and check/called the whole way after shoving, i'd fold 1 out of 50 times. But even then, I'd may still go with my quads. Those are just losses you have to eat and smile after and they will happen if you play enough hands (it's just tougher live...online it's definitely conceivable).

What was the deal with limiting it to 48 entrants? What kinda table layout did this start with?  They said they had 2 extra people who wanted to play.. 50 people

I only know they capped it at 48. I think they were fighting for space with the rest of the room because there were several tournaments + cash games going on.  48/8= 8 tables. Still an extra million in the pot is hard to pass up. 

I think it was due to the fact they didn't think they'd even get 48 so they put a cap to attract entrants (which it usually does).

Obviously it all depends on the situation. With a set of overs on the board and 2 other people in the pot I would probably lay it down (if it even made it to after the river betting). If you play poker long enough you have to learn to fold monsters if you think you're beat. Making huge folds means you've moved up your game. You cant just call and say "I figured you had it". You cant bluff bad players because they will call with shitty hands.....the better players actually get bluffed more because they are willing to lay hands down if their instinct says to do so.

To be honest, there is no real "moving up in your game" to fold quads in a tournament (outside of the AAA88 board you suggested which only uses one of his two cards and perhaps, making quads immensely more likely for him or four to a straight flush where your opponent can have the top or bottom). 

I would just say in general, outside of one card quads and the above straight flush example, you should NEVER fold quads in a tournament setting. It's just too unlikely for him to have the quad over quad or straight flush pairing to beat you, and will happen so infrequently it's not a matter of it being a profitable long-term play or not. It likely will never happen in many of our live poker playing lifetimes.

Meanwhile, I think I have had quads like 5 times in my life.

Ya pretty much have to lay them down on a board of AAAXX if you hold the XX pocket pair. Virtually everyone plays Ace/Rag, and ona board like that, if a maniac/bad player (particularly one not sophisticated enough to bluff an AAAXX board on the river to collect the whole pot instead of splitting it) moves over the top of you for everything, you'll just have to concede the pot.

No real harm though. On a flop of AAA, no one will bet. Then you can't bet when you hit your set. The only real betting will be on the river and the pot will have about $15 in it, if that. 

Ya just concede the pot - no harm, no foul - and wait for quads another day (and you'll be waiting a while).

Been reading the last few posts and the consensus seemed to be dont fold quads ever. Then it seemed to change [somewhat] to 3 of a rank of the board is foldable and gotta agree

AAAJJ board and you have JJ , def foldable.

Like scal said, when the river comes and you have the 2nd nuts and theres 15 in the middle, not really that tough of a fold.

THis is obviously much different than quads but Chan has 1200 invested. He didnt want 2 callers. He also didnt want 2 jacks on the flop. He also didnt want Huck seed looking at him like that on the 
flop. 


I think its hardly the "sick laydown" they are making it out to be, would I have folded? Sometimes...but still , justtrying to show, when not much is invested, and you have to be right 1 out of 3 times to be profitable, folding is the right move.

If you are "never folding quads", then I hope you are sitting on my table on the rare occasion the board is 6d 7d 8d and you have 88.....turn 8 river 9d .

I was originally talking about quads in the same sense as the original 88 quad example where you are holding a pocket pair and the other player is using both his cards to make a straight flush or quads himself. 

Otherwise, when either player is using one card, it makes it immensely more probable he has the necessary card to make quads or a straight flush.  

We could talk about both players sharing quads to on an AAAAX board and the other player just using just there kicker.

That is not even close to a sick laydown. It is a good one but pretty standard given the betting/flop.

I played in Event 54 1k buy in event....that started just an hour before the One Drop. I was eliminated 4 hours in...but later that night I walked down to the Amazon room where they were playing the One Drop. What a cool experience, awesome/super fancy set up...it was eerily quiet in there given how big of a room it was and the number of spectators. It kind of sucked because you couldn't get any closer than like 40 feet from the featured table. The other tables you couldn't even see but they had electronic boards/tv's keeping up with every hand. Very cool experience, I took a picture to get an idea of how awesome it was. It was crazy because 8 hours in to the tourney only 4 guys had been eliminated that just shows you how deep stacks were and the structure. I was actually playing in the poker room at the Rio when they tourney ended...it was on the tv's obviously, every player/dealer tuned in for every big hand. It was a strange sight for sure. Awesome though.

 For $1 million, I better get about 8 hours play! Good that they considered that for the players, if they hadn't demanded it themselves before buying in.

 No, I don't think so...I definitely don't have the funds to buy in to the main event and not too sure where to start in terms of getting into/winning a satellite tourney. I am not in Vegas any more....
