Because frank talk about race is pretty much verboten in the mass media. And people on open forums are often given to discussing matters forbidden to them in "polite society." Imagine a conversation like this in the NY Times, Wash Post, LA Times -- impossible. Newsweek recently had a full of shit article about how horrible it was that whites are still so "racist."
I think rabble rousers like Jerry Springer on his old show would occasionally bring on a confrontation between crazies with swastikas and an audience well-reprensented with blacks or hispanics ---- but that was showbiz, with the inevitable violent ending. Not really a frank "conversation."
The OP had a weak argument, because he didn't understand (as someone pointed out) that black colleges were established out of necessity. (Tho the earliest educated blacks in the US were slaves who were taught basic and higher learning by their white masters - didn't happen often, but it did occur, and some of those ex-slaves became accomplished and prominent.)
But certain fundamentals of race were barely touched on. Like the statement from another poster that I bolded up top.
Yeah, if I'm seriously injured in an accident I do want my EMT to be white. Why? For the same reason I'd want a QB on a team I bet to have a 63% completion ratio, rather than 43%. Doesn't mean I won't win with the bad-arm, bad-brain guy - but I want to put the ol' law of averages in my favor.
It is possible, of course, that my black EMT ( or doctor) was at the top of his class. But it's just as likely, even more likely, that he was given the job (or in the doctor's case had his med school scores upgraded) due to "affirmative action."
He had a little help LOL to get the position he had. No, we can't be completely sure of that. But it's very likely. Just like those black firefighters in Connecticut had a little help from Judge Sotomayor, before it was reversed by the Supremes.
I'm always thinking when I see a black doctor, or a hispanic one, if he or she got thru med schools because of affirmative action grading.
Very unfair, of course, to the excellent minority race medical personnel, but in dealing with people and situations you don't have great knowledge of you have to go by averages. I mean, your life could depend on it.
Same reason I feel better if my airline pilot is white. Or my dentist. (Tho I have patronized hispanic ones -- in Mexico).
I'm not telling non-white posters here (I prefer that term than "minority," as whites are a slim minority in the world and will within a few more decades be a minority in the USA) anything they don't know when I say that even the most liberal whites are nervous if having to travel thru ghetto areas.
I would guess that even middle class blacks would be very apprehensive if their car broke down in the middle of Newark, Camden, Detroit, Washington DC, East St Louis, etc.
Because blacks have a horrifically high rate of violent crime. Yes, mostly against other blacks. But only a moron, white or black, would venture into the heart of darkness (center of a ghetto) at night.
That ain't "racism," bro, that's self-preservation. The great majority of blacks, even in tough ghettos, are NOT criminal. Sure, I know that. But a much more significant minority of the residents are, than would be the case even in a poverty-striken white area, like parts of Appalachia.
The lawful residents of those areas can't seem to take control of their own communities. The vendetta agaisnt "snitches" is celebrated in popular black culture, like rap. (Bill Cosby made similar points five years ago, but was so violently critiqued by the usual suspects, ie the prominent black spokesmen, that he's shut up on the topic ever since.)
Blacks who make it, earn big money, move the hell out of those communities. Usually move into super-white areas. Including black rappers who supposedly celebrate life in the hood in their music. Thereby clearly signifying by their actions what racial lifestyle they prefer.
(Of course, some moneyed blacks could bring into their white areas of residence the popular culture of the ghetto - a la Michael Vick and dogfighting,)
All the rhetoric & propaganda in the world can't change visceral perceptions. And as this land becomes more and more "balkanized," ie tribalized, these perceptions will become immovable "facts on the ground."
