California is running at a huge deficits as their pension liabilities are enormous as well as their medical welfare and social programs run amok due to the influxes of uninsured immigrants.  NV I heard has the highest rate of foreclosures and unemployment is high.  Hawaii has all of the above.

Florida definitely needs to be included on any list. You can buy a 3,000 sq ft home in Orlando right now for a bag of hockey pucks and an apple pie.

The housing market in Florida went upside down...There are not many states that were hit in the housing market worse than FL.

I own two properties there and if it wasn't for renting them out, I would have to light a match :)

I think Nevada has been hit the worst - for the longest. With Michigan and Ohio cash for clunkers and the recent backlash of Toyota along with the Tsunami in Japan, has put a ton of "American Made" cars back on the road...hence increasing manufacturing production.

It is getting better out there. We had a client come to us and tell us they're in need of 19 engineers. I haven't heard those numbers, of one type of employee, since the late 90's. I'm seeing numbers of needing 5 of these and 4 of these...primarily engineering and IT work. Economies are all cyclical. Hell, even The Great Depression didn't last forever.

Out here our currency is Tamales. Two dozen can get you into a badass crib. They throw in the pool for a couple tacos.

cali had first city declare bankruptcy a few yrs back... vallejo. now a city filing for chapter nine seems normal...

Hawaii for sure...tourism, homelessness, they don't have an industry for them to rebound, so half the state is on welfare...and the airline industry keep charging absurd rates and baggage fees to discourage anything changing soon.  Plus everything remains so fken expensive!

I can't speak for anything outside of Cali and Michigan. But I know Cali is not nearly as bad as Michigan. Why? Because I couldn't find a job making more than $10/hr in Michigan when I got out of the Navy. And that job would have required me to drive halfway across Detroit. I was able to find a job in Cali though and have been here for the last three and a half years. I would love to go back to Michigan if I could, but I just couldn't afford it.....even with the cheap rent/mortgage.

I don't give a shit what the recession has done to certain states. Go to Pocahantas County in southern West Virginia. It will change your perspective on life.  Some of these places in So. WV. are the most fucked places in this country and have been for the longest time.  Yet nothing ever changes.  Be thankful you don't live in these areas. As a former West Virginian, I know what I'm talking about just be fortuntate for what you got.

Ktrain-I believe Boone County is where that's based from. The literacy rate, teen pregnacy numbers, unemployment, tobacco use percentages would amaze you.  Sadly, this is some of the most beautiful, tranquil land this country has.  You feel the beauty and the pain of the area all at the same time. Its quite unique.

might agree with "crime rising in big cities" with the recent "flash mob" bullshit in Philadelphia BUT the PA unemploymetn rate is lower than most of the other 49 states.

I would say that Nevada and Florida probaly took it the worst because they are "property sales" economies. I know in Nevada we WAY overbuilt, both in residential and commercial (esp new casinos) the last decade and a half. the legalization of gaming pretty much nation wide and esp the indian casinos in California have really hurt us.

IS a good time for retirees to look at Las Vegas now, though

I would look at the last two census' for population disparity to see what states really have it bad. 

I don't think many Americans are immigrating to other countries so they have to be moving somewhere inside America. 

This is why I think Michigan has had it the worst(I'm biased of course since that includes me). Last I looked Detroit's population had dropped like 20% over the last decade. 

Maybe someone else has some numbers for their respective states.
