A humans brain processing power is apprximately 100 teraflops, roughly 100 trillion calculations per second. This is faster than the combined top 500 supercomputers that have been built.

And people think our brains werent designed but came together by chance and fluke?

It feels strange when a milestone that has always seemed far off in the future passes without you noticing. That happened to me this week when I found out that a supercomputer with the same performance as a human brain was built… back in 2008. There is something a little bit creepy about the fact that the world’s largest supercomputers also have names, but this one, built by IBM at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is disarmingly called Roadrunner. Of course, when we remember that the animated roadrunner easily outsmarted the more likable character Wyle E. Coyote in Chuck Jones’ cartoon, the name no longer seems so inconsequential. Roadrunner is capable of performing 1.5 peta FLOPS (that’s 1.5×10^15 floating-point operations per second). It cost $133 million USD to build and contains 6,480 Opteron processors as well as 12,960 Cell processors. When it’s not being used to simulate nuclear weapon explosions, it spends some of its idle moments simulating portions of the human visual cortex.

In a seminal 1997 paper, Hans Moravec estimated the computing speed of the human brain at 100,000,000 MIPS, or one quadrillion instructions per second, roughly equivalent to the 1.5 petaflop speed record achieved by Roadrunner. Exact calculations on the processing power of a standard human brain vary, but credible projections place it between 1 and 20 petaflops. So even if Roadrunner turns out to me more dunce than Einstein, It is still within an order of magnitude of the smartest humans.

Guys,  I can't even begin to argue with you on this thread cause it seems most of you are lost souls, and we wonder why  crime and murders and lack of respesct for each other is at an all time high ! 

Well  weather you like it or not, I will pray for you today when I'm at church...

it's been a bad week for christian nut victims.  

yes, murders are way up because of the christian nuts but i can tell you from personal experience that instances of born again christianity are way up because of murderers (and rapists, child molesters, people who assault others, wife beaters, etc. etc.).

now, for all of you sensitive types, i'm not saying all born agains are hardcore criminals (just the many i've met), but ignoring the ridiculousness of the concept for a second, you can probably understand how one can be turned off by the idea after talking to some of the worst people on this planet and have them tell you over and over how they shouldn't be punished and the legal system shouldn't apply to them because gd loves them, or they've found some god or it should be up to god, or whatever.

I agree, there are corrupt religious organizations...BUT  

Just because there are few dirty cops, doesn't mean all cops are dirty,right? same goes for any group of race or religion.

How can all the beautiful miracles of life that surrounds us each and everyday mean nothing to the non believers?

nonbelievers in what?  your god?  one of the other hundreds of god?  what?

but setting that aside for a second, an atheist might argue that the atheist might argue that the miracles of life mean everything toi the atheist because he believes that this life is all there is so he takes advantage of everything in this life without worrying about heaven or 72 virgins or whatever religions promise, none of this, "he's in a better place" stuff which might seem to imply that the religious take the miracles of life for granted since they have been led to believe there is a better place than this.  

of course, some have to believe that because they've made some bad choices in this life (see my earlier post about all the criminals who become born agains) or they just got dealt a bad hand in this life (perhaps why you see so many churches in the poor and rural areas).

I believe there is A Creator...and by our definition He is called God, Allah, Jehovah, or what ever dialect you choose. who are you to dismiss the claim that there isn't? who am i to tell you there is? you come into this world alone and you will leave this world alone, everyone is held accountable for their own actions.

If the world was without religion or faith...i suppose there would be no law and order, there would be anarchy.  humans by nature are barbarians and have no respect for each other (look at posts from covers members) Be thankful there are people of religion to keep rapist and murderers in the minority.

i didn't come into this world alone.  mty parents were there and i understand other relatives were there and i've had freinds and relatives around ever since.  i plan to keep it that way until i leave.

as to your second paragraph, without religion, i think we'd have all of the laws we need and the world would be a better place, with more order and less manipulation.   as someone who knows the criminal justice system and knows who commits crimes and why, i don't know these people of religion who keep rapists and murderes in the minority.  on the other hand, i know of many religious people who commit rape, murder and other crimes and i'm aware of a lot of rape, murder and other crimes committed as a result of religion.

As far as people go my rule is basically: The stronger the faith, the bigger the flaw in character.

Essentially: I don't need a book or imaginary boss in the sky to be a good person. 

In Logic, one can not be called upon to prove a negative.

It all sounds so crass and arrogant. So it doesn't convince many, but it really is that simple.

your parents had a hand in your conception, your relatives may have watched you being born, doctors helped,  but you still enter this world by yourself, unless you have a twin then you entered together, lol. seriously though, you cant take anything or anyone with you when you die. thus the saying, "you enter the world alone and you will die alone"

i guess all cops are dirty and corrupted. there is never enough acknowledgement of good deeds done by people of faith because the non believers are too busy trying to knock it down with the few bad apples. humans were barbarians...religion enlightened us and gave us knowledge of things we couldn't comprehend in the beginning. without religion and divine intervention i believe humans would still be living in the Jurassic period. 

but what do i know, there are always 3 sides to a story....the right, the wrong, and the truth.

Fine, if you dont believe in a creator, you are then ultimately led to believe that something can come from nothing. Things create itself out of nothing, by nothing, for nothing.

And everything we see and do today, even though it looks like it has been designed, isnt, it simply came about by chance, fluke and luck.
