He says he believes most think the government owes them this. Where is the polling figures that prove this. Are they his personal polls which he constructed in his head when he saw some people abusing the system vs. most people?
Of course, it's a ludicrous statement. He's saying it because he believes they think it but would never admit to it.
Now what would give him that power?
The fact that he is a middle-class individual who was given opportunity solely do to good fortune/blessings (whatever you want to call it)? Now he can dictate what is in poor people's heads?
We don't choose our parents. Regardless of economic mobility (which is much more constrained in this country after the financial crises of '08) or stories about people moving up the economic ladder, if you are born into poverty it is likely that you will remain in poverty. The same goes for middle-class individuals. The schools you will attend will be worse. The neighborhoods will be unsuitable for development and meaningful prosperous habitation because there will be no tax base and 'crime' (as the law constructs it) will be a daily occurrence. Your peers will be people in a similar circumstance with a sense of hopelessness in an environment unsuitable for growth.
Now you can stand at a podium like the GOP candidates and holler "prosperity for all!" but statistics don't lie. The economic state you were born into is likely the state you will remain in given the above.
So I will repeat this again Koaj. The dissemination of food stamps from a government is a natural function of a responsible industrialized nation to ensure the poor aren't rummaging through local dumps as seen in Mumbai for exampe (an example of a government that largely ignores and fails to fund such problems).
But that in no way makes them believe they are OWED food stamps. It is a 'free lunch' and in an economy of 20%+ real unemployment, 20%+ of people seeking a job WON'T find a job because that job doesn't exist. And fortunately, at a minimum, the government won't let these people starve or panhandle the country over for money they otherwise wouldn't have.
So when this dickhead bandit makes such a claim, you can be damned sure I'll be there to chuck that shit right back in his face and make a fool of him. The burden of proof is on him. So again, I say prove your allegations!
You are clueless, and confused as to what Capitalism is
In a natural, working market, sans government meddling, everyone in this country that wishes to, would be well fed, clothed, and housed. This is proven fact. It is your social nets and government that beget so much poverty along side so much progress
It has been proven time and time again, and just because you decide to hang onto misinformation rather than to educate yourself, doesn't make anything you claim to be fact, as such
You choose to be ignorant, how sad

Capitalism is NOT having over 10 MILLION vacant housing units and a government simultaneously subsidizing housing AND propping up prices
Capitalism is NOT having a government choose who and what to subsidize, so that they can control who grows what. Whenever producers have surplus stock, in a marketplace free of gov intervention, prices fall in line to meet demand. In this, your gov controlled world, the taxpayer foots the bill to destroy the supply, in order to keep prices up, under government decree
You are so far lost, there is nowhere to start, until you decide to open your mind and rid yourself of all your faulty assumptions
