Bowling Green Falcons +2.5

Let's make something very clear right off the top...LAST NIGHT'S MAC CONFERENCE GAME WAS WAY TOO EASY and the chances of that happening again are very very unlikely. These are MAC Conference weekday games and you've been around the block and back you know that records don't mean anything (Toledo and NUI were both 5-0 SU in Conference play last night yet Northern Illinois blew the Rockets out). Everyone who was on Northern Illinois is probably going to be on Miami Ohio tonight and everyone on Toledo last night is also going to be on Miami Ohio tonight. Big mistake in my eyes. The line doesn't make sense first of all and the line is begging action on Miami Ohio. The Redhawks are 4-1 SU in MAC Conference play and sit only one game behind both Temple and Ohio for the MAC East Division lead and they are one win away from being Bowl eligible for the first time since 2004. They go up against a Bowling Green team that is 1-4 SU in MAC Conference play and that is 1-2 SU at home in 2010. So only -2.5 points? Something is up. First of all Miami Ohio can't score and they have the #104 ranked offense in the Nation at 19.4 points per game (15.2 on the road but they are excused with the tough schedule) coming into tonight. Bowling Green average 23.7 points per game on the season (25.3 at home) but their defense stinks. Both defenses have weaknesses. Apart from a Week 3 home win over Marshall, the Green Falcons haven't really given these fans much to cheer about losing their next two home games to Conference opponents Kent State and Buffalo but there is a catch here. This is Bowling Green's first weekday game of 2010 and BOWLING GREEN WENT 5-0 SU IN WEEKDAY GAMES IN 2009. On the other side of the field you have a MIAMI OHIO TEAM THAT IS 0-8 THE LAST TWO SEASONS IN WEEKDAY GAMES. You probably won't find two worst running offenses than these two teams have as they have both combined for 2.1 yards per carry so far in 2010 and both average only 62.0 rushing yards per game but here is the catch in a game that will probably feature more turnovers than nice plays on offense. Bowling Green RB Willie Geter is injured but he will play in this game and he is coming off a 100+ yard rushing game at Central Michigan. The Senior has 566 rushing yards on the season and has caught 24 passes from redshirt freshman QB Matt Schilz. So with Miami Ohio allowing 4.9 yards per carry on the road this season, expect the veteran Geter to have a huge game and let this Bowling Green team ride on his back. The MAC Conference and these weekday games are all about turnovers and I feel confident in telling you that Bowling Green have forced 7 turnovers (2 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries) their last three games while Miami Ohio has also forced 7 turnovers their last three games but the x-factor tonight, apart from RB Willie Geter, is the fact that Miami Ohio has turned the ball over 9 times their last three games (6 interceptions, 2 lost fumbles) and you can't do that in MAC Conference weekday games. Not against a Bowling Green team that has 13 interceptions in 9 games (they had only 9 in all of 2009) so far this season. I talked a lot about RB Willie Geter and his experience, leadership and role in Bowling Green's win over Central Michigan as a +13 point road underdog in their last game and you should also know that Miami Ohio is 1-7 ATS in their last eight games coming off a game where they allowed less than 100 rushing yards. They are a very inconsistent team and that has shown in their 2-8 ATS record in their last 10 games coming off a straight up win. Bowling Green has been gold in weekday games and they are now 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games played in November so this is the time of the year to back them. The Green Falcons are used to being underdogs going 5-3 ATS this season as dogs both home and away and the Underdog has won 4 of the last 5 in this series. Again it's too easy to take Miami Ohio knowing they are 5-0 ATS in their last five trips to Bowling Green so I am going with the Green Falcons instead and expect another weekday win for this bunch. Tough game guys, approach wisely.

These two teams are headed in opposite directions.  Miami is rising in the MAC and trying to return to ways of old, BG is in a downward spiral.  You mention their record on weekday games the past two years.  Neither of them are the same team as those years.  Miami went all of 2-14 in the MAC those two years, while BG went 10-6.  Based on how their records look today, I don't put much stock in the past.  Today, Miami rolls as they are the better team.

Both teams tried to blow the game and in the end Bowling Green was dealt the final blow with that interception in the late going. Still not unhappy about the handicapping on the game, just some bad luck in the MAC game and maybe a bad call (ball hit the ground on the INT?) that fell victim to the fog. More tonight.

Pittsburgh Panthers -6

HUGE GAME tonight for both of these teams but the game is big for very different reasons. The Pittsburgh Panthers have a lot of doubters out there because of some of their performances so far in 2010 but the bottom line remains that they are the top team in the Big East Conference and the way things are going right now they are heading to the BCS Bowl Series. The Panthers are 5-3 SU on the season but 3-0 SU in Big East Conference play and that's good enough for a two game lead over just about everyone else in this weak Conference. The Connecticut Huskies on the other hand are tied for dead last in the Big East Conference and they are only 4-4 SU on the season. That means they are out of the race for the Conference but they are still very much in the hunt for a fourth straight Bowl Game berth under Randy Edsall which would only be the fifth Bowl Game appearance in school history. So needing two wins in their last four games is very doable but they have much easier opponents than the Panthers along the way as they have South Florida, Cincinnati and Syracuse still left to go. This is probably not their target game for a win. It's really hard to bet on Connecticut knowing how badly their offense has struggled with only 13.3 points per game in their last three games on 252.3 total yards of offense. The Panthers defense is finally in full gear right now allowing 12.7 points per game their last three games and allowing only 232.0 total yards of offense per game in those games. RB Jordan Todman is the one and only hope on offense and because of him Connecticut is ranked #38 in the Nation in rushing yards per game but Pittsburgh has #8 ranked defense against the run in the Nation and you can forget about that if you are the Panthers the Huskies. In their last three games the Panthers have allowed only 91.7 rushing yards per game and only 3.0 yards per carry. Their secondary has been just as solid allowing 4.6 yards per pass attempt. Pittsburgh won 34-10 the last time they played here and I expect much of the same tonight as they shut critics down. The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last four Big East Conference games and they have covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 road games as a favorite. Okay the only concern tonight is the fact that in the last 6 games Pittsburgh has played on a ESPN's Thursday Night Football, they are 1-4-1 ATS in those games and they have screwed a bunch of us in the past. Having said that, you can take most of the ATS stats for the Connecticut Huskies and throw them out the window because the Huskies are a different team in 2010 and Randy Edsall has one of his worst teams in quite some time. Sure they have been very good at home, they have been very good as underdogs and they are tremendous coming off games where they scored less than 20 points per game (22-4 ATS in their last 26 in that situation) but again I can't trust the Huskies defense and they have been terrible on offense apart from RB Jordan Todman. Go with the Panthers and have some confidence in this one.
