Don't you mean "Lame Kitten" Boom? Lame Kitten pretty much makes a fool of himself just about everytime he opens his mouth. So much so that he even makes Al Davis look like a genius . . . if that's possible. But because no one really considers him to be a top tier college coach, I think it's a stretch to label him "overrated." Moreover, he has yet to coach a single game so I think it's a bit premature label him a a failure as well.

I personally don't care for the guy's antics, but when you view what he's done objectively, he has quietly assembled a very good group of coaches who are proven recruiters. As everyone (who has a brain that functions properly) knows, recruiting is the lifeblood of any organization, and in the short time Kitten has been there, I think he's done an excellet job on that front.

He landed Bryce Brown who was the #1 over all recruit in the nation, and stole 5-star stud recruit Janzen Jackson from "The Hat" in a NSD shocker!!! That is pretty impresive work in less than 3 months on the recruiting trail. Based on that, I would rate Kitten's job performance on his initial signing class an A+.

The Vols have some serious holes to fill on that roster, so I certainly don't believe this will be a top tier team this season, but if Kitten can manage to get this team bowling in his first season, I would grade that as a very successful campaign for him in his first year based on what he has to work with.

In short, I would say it's way to earlier to make a call on Lame Kitten's college coaching career.

come on, dont say Bama is as easy of a place to recruit as LSU. Its not even close. Everyone's crooked!  Take a look at the list of top recruits. LSU is on everyone's list. But with saban, that changes.

Les Miles is a horrible speaker, but that doesn't make him overrated. People put too much emphasis in that. A good coach surrounds himself with good coaches. He has done that: Pelini (now gone), Crowton, Chavis, etc..

Someone mentioned that he should have won two NCs at LSU. If it wasn't for Hurricane Katrina LSU would have played for the BCSNC in 2005. The campus was set up as a triage facility for 3 weeks after the hurricane. The practice schedule was wrecked. They had a home game switched to Arizona St at the last minute. AND then Hurricane Rita rolls through SE Louisiana which pushes the home opener vs Tennessee to a Monday night. I was at that game and it was the hottest, most humid game I've ever felt. It was fucking miserable. LSU wilted in the 2nd half (lots of cramping) which was a direct result from the ruined practice schedule. It was the start of 11 straight games ending with a tired, banged up LSU losing in the SECCG to Georgia.

Saban would have had a meltdown if he had stayed for the 2005 season. Hell, he has a meltdown if someone tells him hello in the hallway because it distracts him. And you don't know that Miles had to convince 3 All-SEC performers to come back to LSU for the 2005 season. If Saban had stayed, all 3 would have declared for the NFL.

If you want to create criteria to overrate someone, you will have to look at coaches who have everything going for them all of the time, but manage to fuck it up every year: Richt at UGA always seems to stumble. Carroll at USC has the most talented team every season but manages to lose 1 to 2 games per yer to a team(s) they have zero business losing to. Mack Brown was in that list until Vince Young single-handidly saved his ass. Stoops rolls through his conference every season but has lost 4 consecutive BCS games.

If I had choose one coach who fucks up a perfect scenario every chance he gets, it's Mark Richt. The media falls all over this guy but when the chips are down and he needs ONE game to put him over the top, he turns over a pair of dueces against an opponent with a royal flush.

Glad you mentioned Mark Richt. I didnt want to mention him and get blasted, but he's VERY overrated, IMO. I understand he's a great guy and all, but what have they really done under his watch. Win a couple of BCS games? Big deal, Georgia should be better than that. But I do understand he took over a program in shambles, but Georgia should be much better. I think he's too nice of a guy.

As much as I think Les is a horrible coach and would never, ever want him coaching my team, he absolutely has hired some top coaching talent. He also has done an outstanding job on the recruiting trail. But my praise for "The Hat" ends there.

Losing that Monday night game to Tenessee was absolutely inexcusable . . . plain and simple . . . and you know it. Tennessee played in the same weather that LSU played in.

LSU's performance last year was also inexcusable!!!  I understand the QB issues and perhaps you can cut him a little slack there, but how can one explain away the dismal performance of one of the most talented defenses in the country? Last years team should have won 9 or 10 games.

The bottom line is that Lester's teams consistently underperform year in and year out. Ask yourself this. When has one of his teams ever exceeded expectations? NEVER!!! Now compare that to Saban whose teams cosistently outperform expectations.

Applying the same measuring stick to Richt, I think an argument could definitely be made that his teams regularly underperform and, therefore, may be a bit overrated.

Some of you guys like you are beyond stupid. How can you judge a program off of 1 year ??? Just because Troy almost beat them last year, now they are a team that play down to there competition ?? Come on don't be stuck on stupid. They had a down year and that's all. Hell USC lost to Stanford. Do they play down to there comp. HELL YEA. They lost to 1 GUY RODGERS AT OREGON ST. Also good ol Nick Saban lost to UL MONROE, AND ALMOST LOST TO TULANE LAST YEAR....

Here's where you're wrong and obviously "undervalue" the LSU program. LSU is a top program (top 5 easily). ANY COACH COULD BE THERE AND PUT UP THE SAME RESULTS. Its the program, not Les Miles. What dont you get? He inherited a kick ass program. He basically jumped on the band wagon.

Do some research and see what Saban stepped into his first year at Bama. They were in shambles. There isnt a chance in hell Miles would have turned Bama around so quickly. NONE. LSU hired a safe coach. They were desparate. I really question whether you really are an LSU fan. I dont think you are. You're looking at this completely wrong. LSU always recruits the best classes. Miles was handed a gift National CHampionship. They probably shouldnt have been there, but took care of business in the final. His coaching was awful that year.

Saban left Mile with a shit load of talent. He had no choice but to win a national championship.

Back to the 2005 Tennessee game. Yes, Tennessee played in the same weather, but they didn't have nearly 3 weeks of practices screwed up by btb hurricanes. That, IMO is the ONLY reason why LSU lost. We were killing Tennessee in the first half, but, by the 4th quarter, the stress (mentally and physically) of everything up to that point finally took it's toll on the Tigers and they were dropping like flies. I'll reiterate what I said: that was the worst I felt in a stadium, as a fan/player, EVER.

And don't get me going on a certain coach who loses to a team EVERY year who he has no business losing to: ULM and Utah ring a bell? Every year it happens with that guy: UAB in 2000, Ole Miss in 2001, Arkansas in 2002, Florida in 2003, and Iowa in 2004.

Don't forget that Miles started the resurrection of the Oklahoma St program; just like Saban started at Michigan St. Gundy has managed to build on that at OSU. Saban's hand picked choice to succeed him at MSU (Bobby Williams) ran that program into the ground within 2 years.

I'll give you one stat about Saban that most people don't realize. This is his 13th year of coaching at a BCS school. Saban led teams have had 3 losses of more in 10 of 13 seasons: His last year at Michigan St, the 2003 season at LSU and the 2008 season at Alabama.

Miles made his 1st mistake last season after Pelini (who left a little to be desired here) left for Nebraska. He promoted two assistants to run the defense and they made it too complicated. Every guy in the secondary had wrist bands, and, more than once, they were caught trying to figure out where to go on D called when the ball was snapped. He has rectified that this year by brining in John Chavis.

I like Miles as a coach:
1. He is an honest man.
2. He can recruit; much to the shagrin of opposing teams who were hoping that LSU would fall off the map.
3. He learns from his mistakes.
4. He brings in quality assistant coaches.
5. He takes advantage of situations during the game: 4th down conversions vs UF in 2007 and the TD pass to Byrd to beat AU in 2007.

Those are signs of a good coach. And I don't know why people think he's overrated because the only thing I've ever seen from media/fans is that he's a bad coach. If anything, that proves he's underrated.

Nah.. The coaches in the pressbox saw the previous play and knew they could beat the CB. And don't get hung up on the time. He caught the TD with about 4 seconds to go and the clock was stopped at 1 second. However, I do think Matt Flynn took a little too much time getting the play off. I think they broke the huddle with about 15-20 seconds and snapped it around 8.

 That's not entirely accurate...............LSU was beaten @ home @ night by Oregon St. just a few years ago. The scoreboard just didn't reflect it.............thanks to missed xtra pts. Anybody care to enlighten this young man?

 

Oh trust me I bleed purple and gold. And thats why I'm defending my coach. Like I say recruits dont make you go 43-11. Coaching plays a great deal with that.

Also I'm not saying Miles dont recruit good. I agree with the fact that he recruits good. But look at programs like Miami. That program was full of talent, but Davis left, and a new man came in and completely ruined it. It takes a good coach to uphold a good program.

 

And I give Saban a lot of credit he did wake the sleeping giant but it takes a good coach to keep it up

Also to give you more knowledge on that play. Miles said that Flynn was taking to much off the clock after they broke the huddle. Flynn even said himself he did'nt know the clock was down that low. But even when he threw the pass the clock still stopped with time to go in the game. REMEMBER THEY STILL KICKED THE BALL OFF AND AUBURN HAD A CHANCE TO RETURN.
