UNDERrated is easier......you boys already beat me to it......best that seldom gets mentioned is  Mike Riley.....Skip Holtz ... Rich Brooks and Bill Cubit  right behind him

OVERrated much tougher......everybody pretty much thinks they're great...but maybe not......?
Pete Carroll great coach.....maybe game management / in game adjustments could be better ?? but who TF am i to question him?
Tressel seems to have a knack for HIDING ..... NFL talent
Tedford doesn't do something.... this year... may have to throw him in.....QB guru has had bad QB for awhile it seems
Dan Hawkins .....Mike Price maybe not as good as we thought....(if teams stink again)......

I agree with you Bert! Bob Stoops is not overated no other coach has won their conference title's lik Bob. Yes he hasn't had success in Bowl games but he is still the best coach in the country!

Well, he has only turned around a program and was offered the Mich and "da U" jobs in the past 2 yrs.
 
I know, its in the own BE and its a Jersey team, no one cares.

First, Bob Stoops is not in the Top 5 when it comes to coaches, so anyone who thinks he is the best had better re-examine his record of late.  Both he, and Tressell, have let the game pass them by, as evidenced by their records in BCS games.  They cannot beat the talented teams, though they get the best talent in their respective conferences.   Mack Brown has won 3 out of the last 4 against Stoops.
 
Paul Johnson is one of the best coaches to go unnoticed.  What he did at Navy was great,and now he is turning Ga.Tech into a powerhouse. 
 
Sciano is O.K., but his team has only had 1 year where they lost less than 4 games.  Not earth shaking, especially when you consider thaty play in the Big East, and have to depend upon the likes of Howard, Northfolk State, and Morgan State for one win a year.  This year they play two FCS teams.
 
Gary Patterson is on the verge of breaking through this year.  In the past 4 years, TCU has lost two or fewer games 3 times.  This year, they may run the table and crash the BCS Party.

Bowden and Spurrier overrated?

Hmmm...I think it might be more accurate to say the game has evolved without them. 

I would agree on a given Saturday that they are not the top guys anymore.  But Spurrier took a Florida team that hadn't won their own conference since the days of goldfish swallowing and 23-skiddo and turned them into a big time program.  Bowden took over an 0-11 joke of a program and dominated college football for more than a decade (admittedly it got tougher for him when his assistants all got hired away...Brad Scott and Mark Richt come to mind). 

Building up programs is part of the job.  O'Brien is great at that.  A real winner.  Leavitt has done amazing things, though sometimes it appears he's not the greatest game day coach.  Schiano?  Come on, Rutgers was about to be kicked out of the conference.  Al Golden?  Temple DID get kicked out of the conference.  Turner Gill...Buffalo.    I would argue Hawkins has been a major success.  Boise would be crap without him.  How about OK State?  A perennial cellar-dweller until Mike Gundy.  I see him nowhere on this list.  June Jones at Hawaii?  They sucked before he got there and they suck again.

For some schools, it's not about winning the Crystal Ball, it's about creating a viable program that improves the profile of the school and brings in alumni bucks.  Being competitive in your conference is a big damn deal in most places.

Overrated might be a strong word in this context. I mean he has taken USC and made then into a perennial powerhouse and success in the BCS.

That being said...

for as much crap Tressel and Stoops take for not being able to win "the big ones", Carroll seems to have a knack for losing the small ones...

What's worse is up for debate...

Saying Pete Carroll is overrated means you have tremendously high expectations for USC, which actually means he's doing a phenomenal job. Great teams seem to always have a knack for losing the small ones.
 
Overrated:  Les Miles, hands down. He has no business coaching LSU. Should be at a program like Michigan State/So. Carolina/ Clemson. (Honorable mention: Jeff Tedford)
 
Underrated: Mike Riley, glad to see some love for him. I wanted him instead of Pete. Turned out pretty good.

Re Carroll.  you guys get my point.  Guy took a mediocre franchise (they were lucky to get a bowl bid...and lose...before him), and he made them into a perennial winner.  That said, sometimes on game day, he makes poor decisions.  Like keeping Booty in the game instead of going to Sanchez against Stanford in what was one of the greatest upsets in college history.  I don't think he's overrated any more than I think Stoops is.

I give him alot of credit for sticking with  Rutgers even when the Offers came flooding in ....

Schiano is a little better then ok,He can basically write his own ticket to coach wherever he wants.He already turned down Michigan and Miami in the last 3 years.I think he is waitng for Joe Paterno to leave and then take the Penn State job.

I know Double- I was just surprised you didn't mention him but brought up Kelly in the BE.
 
Dirty- That has been the thinking since he  turned down Mich and MIA. It might be the one lace he leaves for. In his mind thought, he still has plenty to do in Jersey.

There are 50 coaches in college that could do the same job Miles does at LSU. That school basically recruits because its LSU. You dont go there because of Les Miles.

He's VERY overrated. I think knowledgable LSU fans would tell you the same thing.

Bigdaddy- I think you should take it into perspective. Yeah, they lost more than 4/5 games, but it means more when they weren't even winning that many. Then, lets talk post season. The school was at 1 total bowl game, it was in NJ and they never played it again before he got here. Now, they have been to 4 straight, and won the past 3. Yes, I know these aren't the Rose, orange or Sugar, but you have to start somewhere.

I love the guy,but I think he will leave Rutgers for the Penn State job.He is a big time recruiter in Florida and it is alot easier to convince a kid to come to Penn State then it is to convince him to come to Rutgers.Good luck this season.

knowledgeable I am a LSU fan. And I will say it again Les Miles is not a OVERRATED COACH.

 

Recruits dont make ALL of that 42-11 record. A coach has a lot to do with that.

Gameplanning is the 1st way to judge a coach. Than it's win percentage. IT'S PROVEN THAT ANYTIME YOU GIVE LES MILES TIME TO PREPARE FOR A TEAM HE BEATS THEM. NOT ONLY DO HE BEATS THEM HE HANDLY BEAT THEM.

He is underfeated in bowl games and that speak volumes. Look at how he gameplanned against Georgia Tech triple option. That's a perfect game to go back and look at. He had them looking so bad. Also he is a special teams wizard. Did you see that fake field goal against South Carolina 2 years ago? Or how about the onside kick against Georgia Tech that was successful and the Fake punt against Georgia Tech that was successful. The man is a good coach. And if you guys think he's overrated than you all have it twisted he's severely underrated. YOU DONT WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND A SEC CHAMPIONSHIP OFF OF LUCK

My grandma could have coached that LSU team to a NC.  Miles tried as hard as possible to screw it up and somehow couldnt do that.
