Extending your lead from 8 to 11 wouldn't do you any good? So if you went for it and didn't get the 4th down conversion, last time I checked, a team down 8 has to score a TD and due to that TD gets a chance at a 2 PT conversion. This can happen in 1 series.
If you extend to 11, the opposition can score a TD, but there is no 5 PT conversion try, just an onside kick prayer.

Not sure I agree Boom. They are just as likely to fumble running for the 1st down on 4th as they are getting the fg attempt blocked and returned for a score.
Just my opinion. I understand what you are talking about though. When I seen the clock winding down I was wondering if they would go or kick the fg, figured it was a 50-50 shot.

Every coach would kick that ball. You have the best kicker in the country. You make it a two possession game. NW has shredded your defense in the second half so why give them the opportunity to go down and score?? Yes its 95 yards but with the clock stopping on first downs you could easily go 50 yards plus in 3 plays and still have an opportunity or two to thrown one in the endzone. Get over it you lost and shouldn't of even been that close
I can't believe I lost on this game and am trying to explain to someone that the call I lost on was a good call

I'd argue that there's the same chance of a strip, fumble return for a TD on their 4th down attempt as there is a FG block return for TD.
The play I'm pissed about as a NU backer is A&M's play call on 3rd and 2. RUN IT UP THE GUT and then you have an argument to go for it on 4th and short...but once they lost 4 yards on 3rd and 2, you HAVE to kick the FG and make it a 2-possession game.

why would you give a team the ball with 30 seconds left in a 1 possession game?
N.W. just scored 2 TD's in the 4th. you want a coach to give them the ball???
kicking the field goal ended any chance for N.W.
thats why it was the right call.

You're just making yourself look like you can't man up and take a reasonable loss...nowhere near a moose.
A&M's kicker makes the FG's at an 85% rate. Let's be extremely generous and say that his kick will get blocked 5% of the time. Based on simple math, you're telling me you would turn down an 80% chance to simply close out the game then and there?
So lets say he misses the FG, or gets the FG blocked with no return - NW essentially has the ball at the exact same location if they were to go for it and get stuffed. The chances NW blocks the FG and return it for a TD are EXTREMELY small....a sane coach (to use your words) would pretty much dismiss this possibility as it is likely under a 1% chance.
Also, lets say they do go for it - there is no saying they don't score a TD if they go for it - if they run the ball and get past the first layer, its 7 pts (see OK last night).
