I will try to do this from memory....
ECU up 30-26
ECU gets ball with 1:52 on the UCF 15 after a UCF 4 and out
UCF has 1 timeout
Ruffin McNeal is not very good at math apparently because he thought he could sit on it so he does on first down.
Then he does it on second down and UCF calls its last TO with 1:02.
3rd down the QB kind of runs backwards to about the 24. Wastes a few seconds extra but still 16 secs left.
4th down they take a 10 yard loss on a play I cant describe.
UCF gets ball on 34 with 10 secs.
15 yard out pattern

At least on fourth they should have ran the ball and called a dive instead of running back 10-15 yards towards midfield. Best was the player taking off his helmet before the play was over and he was the coverage guy on the WR who caught it. Very poor but funny. And, +7 winner winner chicken dinner.

If they woulda just ran up the middle on 4th down....or even ran backwards and then punted they win.....almost any scenario they get the win EXCEPT for what they did....
I watch a lot of football, and am still baffled that guys that do this for a living and have made it this far in life are completely clueless....
ECU wins this game 100% of the time with a decent coach....Just ridiculous

If we are just talking about 4th down...
With 4th and 19 at the 24 yard line with 16 secs left....
I think you have 2 choices.
1. Kick the FG.
2. Throw to the end zone.
I do #1 if I have a decent FG, and if my FG kicker is a disaster I do #2.
You 100% do not take a 10 yard sack.

Totally agree.
Did you notice that the QB on 1st down could have stood there for 20 seconds before he took a knee? UCF wasn't even trying.
But if you want to do the backwards thing, you take 10 yard losses that take time, and then you punt out of bounds on 4th down from the 45 or something.
You are right. THIS WAS THE ONLY WAY - THE EXACT WAY - THAT THEY COULD POSSIBLY LOSE.

They even had a third choice of take delay of game and punt, which probably would have taken it down close to the end of the game with any hang time at all. My scenario was just for the terrible 4th down call of running backwards towards midfield.

The delay of game would have happened at 15 seconds.
ECU called a timeout at 16 seconds - so really it was just 1 second.
But yes - I guess you are right - they could have punted from the 29 (with the penalty) - but I still drop the QB back and throw to the end zone - or at least throw it a mile high and out of bounds.

Its was obvious the coaching staff had no clue on what they should do. They ran backward and to the right on third down. Taking them out of a easy FG and then they didn't throw to the end zone? They were completely unprepared for that situation and to stupid to figure it out.
