I hate going against UTSA because they have one of the best coaches in football in Jeff Traylor a former Texas HS coach who knows every HS coach in Texas and is getting big time recruits . Former rb coach at Arkansas and at Texas They have one of the best qb's in Harris and wr's that are big and fast . OL is back and they are experienced. They lost all american RB Sincere McCormick to the NFL but on offense they are loaded. Beat WKU in conf title game 49-41 even though they lost to North Texas the game before 45-23. They ended up 12-2 and Traylor was offered some power 5 schools to coach at and refused . Added on transfer rb from Arkansas and on offense this team can score . They scored 52.45,44,44,and 49 in last game vs WKU. Open up vs Houston and last year opened up vs Illinois away and beat them 37-30 . Houston was 12-2 and had the exact same record as UTSA. Houston on offense is loaded but the big difference is Defense. Roadrunners defense is a problem Last year Coogs beat Memphis 33-14 where UTSA beat them 31-28 . Both beat up Rice . Houston is a much better team on defense and think they can slow down Harris and co. Houston has 6'3 Tune at qb and he has some wr's that are game breakers. Solid rb's and good ol line On Defense Houston is much better then UTSA's Think UTSA will score but get out scored by Tune and company . UTSA will have to score a lot to keep up with its defensive woes they have Although UTSA was 12-2 in last 3 games the defense gave up 45,41 and lost to San D St in a bowl game 38-24. Tune and Dell are the top qb-wr combo in the country. And some big time recruits at wr make them too strong for UTSA defense. Think the line is off at -4 . See Houston winning by a Td or more

You are right… UTSA won’t be able to stop Houston on Offense but UTSA has Harris back again… and two of the top 10 WR in college football stats wise… Trailer beat WKU by coaching.. using the clock.. he’s a master at extending drives and picking up first downs for ball control… He’ll play a similar game here… UTSA will score and they aren’t afraid.. could come down to a last possession type game as Houston lost a couple big defenders… they are obviously better on D than UTSA but that won’t stop Harris and Co at home from scoring… also factor in the recruiting importance of this game as San Antonio is not far away… Houston should win in like a 41-28 type game but ITSA is too pesky for me too mess with.. I’ve learned my lesson on them…

Last year or the year before I went to the Alamo Dome and watched North Texas vs UTSA. I retired in Austin so the drive to San Antonio was about 90 minutes. . The Alamo dome was beautiful . Sat right behind the UTSA bench in row 5. on the 2nd or 3rd play Sincere McCormick ran up the middle for a 56 yd td. I missed it live because I just sat down to eat some popcorn and wooom . He was gone. Up the middle and no one touched him Think it was a 54 yd td run. It was 2 years ago and UTSA beat North Texas and scored just under 50 points . The line was North Texas -3 or 4. I had my mean green big and after watching Sincere on the rerun screen I knew I was in big trouble. Sincere was about 5'5 and looked liked a body builder but so quick and had that accelerated speed after he hit the line Think last year he led the nation in rushing. Seattle drafted him and for you fantasy players he will go late but think he will continue to be dominate . Harris the qb was warming yo right in front of me. A lefty and skinny but had nice touch He had two wrs Cephus who was tall and skinny and Franklin who was lightning quick ..During the warm ups I was watching a qb warm up. He was throwing 50-60 yds passing drill. He was the backup Adkins . Harris was the starter and can escape the pocket and run. Houston has Holgosen as coach and his offense can score. Think Houston can win this by more then a touchdown and not playing Cincinnati and UCF this year gives them a good opportunity to make AAC title game. Coogs have the best qb,wr,TE,and Off Tackle in the conf. They also have the one of the best LB's and safeties and with there running game Road runners cannot concentrate on just Tune . Think Roadrunners will be chasing Coogs beep beep all day,
Thank you guys for the added comments . Again hate going against Traylor and watching him and the President of UTSA announce his return in the looker room last year and with everybody thinking she was there to announce his departure and when she announced Traylor is staying with a new contract the team went crazy. It was like they won the super bowl and world series all in one. That excitement scares me being a former coach but those kids will die for him But UTSA has to face Tune and its another year.. good luck to everybody this year hope we all do well ..

its going over! Both talented offenses with weapons on the perimeter. Also, both teams lost several key D players. Be careful on this one, UTSA has won 10 straight at home!

I don't know about the over...The difference in the outcome and cover will be the Houston D, the team speed of Houston, and Tune's passing ability...UTSA is a great story and should dominate the CUSA...Houston has bigger plans...If they can beat UTSA and Texas Tech, they may go undefeated, since they avoid Cinci and UCF in the regular season..If they could win that game and go 13-0, they could make the case for the CFP with some breaks, and definitely qualify for a prestigious NYD Bowl...Holgorson is an eccentric, and he will know that he will need to maximize MOV throughout the season to have a chance at the far fetched goal of the CFP...Houston beats UTSA by at least 10 points...in my opinion...

I thought about the over but Houston has a history of starting slow in games at the beginning of the season also factor in super bowl theory for UTSA and like I said before… Traylor knows the only way to defeat a high power offense like they did against WKU last year is ball control… they love to drain the clock… they key to playing the total is Houston’s D..but they will only slow UTSA down somewhat…I think it’s already in the 60s so that is 30 a piece on average… tough to ask for considering both teams will also run the ball..

Just to make a point here about UTSA, I don’t think the perceived advantage in talent of Houston over UTSA is quite what many would assume. Using Rivals as a data source, the most recent 3 year recruiting score for Houston is 825 and for 1010 for UTSA. I know this a flawed method of assessing talent because it does not account for transfers.
The TARP method that is espoused by Sports Action Network takes into account returning production AND transfers. Using this method, Houston has a TARP score of 4 while UTSA has a TARP score of 9. Another indicator that UTSA may actually have a talent edge on Houston. I believe the national perception of Houston talent may be inaccurate, at least in regard to how it compares to UTSA.
One way to handicap by the numbers is to estimate the total yardage by each team and then run Monte Carlo simulations and play the games thousands of times using projected yardage as the focal point. I estimate that Houston will have about 402 yds in this game and UTSA will have 379 yards. Using a betting line of Houston -6.5, my simulations show that UTSA will have a 60% chance to cover the number while Houston only has a 40% chance to cover. Based on the data presented here, I will likely be on UTSA +6.5, hopefully +7, by game time.

line is now Houston -6.5 Still think Houston will score and win by a TD .UTSA on offense can stay with Coogs but again I think its is Road Runner defense that will have a tough time keeping up on offense . On a sad note yesterday morning Houston Cougars Mascot Shasta 4 was put to sleep . Its home was the Houston zoo so he won't be making an appearance at the game on the side lines. So maybe a new Shasta Cougar or baby cub will appear .. Not sure of the ats record with Shasta on the sidelines good luck . Combato you make an excellent point about the projected yardage but again think it comes down to defense and Coogs with or without Shasta are the better team there .And Roadrunners still have to replace Sincere and I'm sure Traylor has some replacements in line but he will be a big loss .
On the way to UTSA in San Antonio on the interstate is a sign for Incarnate Word. It is a few exits before the UTSA sign. Incarnate Word was the Catholic school that blew away Tex St last year. They had a qb that was one of the best in the country. Big 6'5 kid with a cannon of an arm . How can this kid who is better then anyone Texas or Texas Tech has at quarterbacking and at a FBS school Cameron Ward . Anyway he threw for over 450 yds and a few td's vs Tex St and transferred to Washing St this year .He will be the best qb in the PAC 10 or 12 this year. Think Wash St over 4.5 wins for the year is a great prop bet He is only a junior and has 2 years left and will be a big time NFL player someday . Remember that name Cameron Ward. I do because I took Tex St over Incarnate last year due to Tex St only losing to Baylor the week before . Incarnate and Cameron blew Tex St out of San Marcus

Houston is going to blow UTSA out of the water...win and cover...UTSA is a great story with a great coach, who should have its way during CUSA play...Houston is a different beast with much high caliber players, coaching and motivation...Holgerson won't pull the dogs off, considering what happened at home to Texas Tech to start the 2021 season...Updated prediction...Houston 35 UTSA 17...Is Houston this year's Cinci? Who knows...But with wins in week 1 and week 2, Houston avoids Cinci and UCF in the regular season...They will be striving for perfect, and to defuse the arguments by pundits that it is a non power 5 school with a relatively weak schedule, a win in the AAC C Game, could propel them into the CFP, with some luck...I get the love for UTSA, but I don't think you are seeing the big picture here...It will be my top play in week 1...

What you said was absolutely the sensible play and most likely will happen… it’s just Frank and his boys… and Traylor… they are gonna get decimated on defense… so the only question is can Houston hold on defense… I they they make enough plays to yes…
but there is always that chance of a track meet…at UTSA… and these dudes have done it numerous times… Plus Holgerson can get got…especially the first game… plus UTSA would love a rivalry with big brother up the block… super bowl theory… UTSA will risk injury to get this win… Houston won’t…
just sayin…

I don't buy the Super Bowl Reasoning, or even that playing in the Alamodome is even that much of a home field. Like Cougar High (what we here in Texas call Houston since its a commuter school) UTSA is also a commuter school...Perhaps since they are forecasted to win the CUSA, they will get a good crowd...Traylor is an up and coming coach, and may earn a Power 5 gig one day...Holgorson has already been there, and he chose to come back to Houston, due to recruiting and resources...He has already done the Power 5 thing, and been reasonably successful at it...The only track meet I see is the UTSA secondary chasing down super fast wide receivers for Houston...houston replaced two starters in the secondary, and I see a bend but don't break keep them in front of you mentality for the DC of Houston...UTSA did get a late transfer from Arkansas, who had about 500 yards last season to try to replace Sincere...who was a UFA of Oakland...I love the hype on UTSA because it keeps the line reasonable...Sorry I don't see UTSA keeping up...And I see my Longhorns beating them by 24+ as a 17+ point favorite in week 3, after Texas gets destroyed by Alabama at home in week 2...I think UTSA can be competitive with @Army in week 2, if everything goes right...But, you know UTSA wants to beat Houston, so they will focus on stopping the pass, won't be able to effectively, then have to learn how to stop a prolific option attack from Army in less than a week...Then have to play a reeling Texas, who will be pissed off, who has a RB who will put 200 yards on them, and if they can slow him down, a 5 star NFL potential prospect in Ewers throwing to 4 star Worthy...I see UTSA starting 0-3...and then pulling off 9 straight wins to win the regular season CUSA championship...The wins last year by UTSA over Memphis and Illinois were impressive, but those two teams weren't very good last season, and I think the record is a mirage that many of the UTSA backers in week 1...That and the difference of the level of competition between the CUSA and the AAC...The AAC is a power 5 light conference...And CUSA in now lower ranked than the Sun Belt Conference...Thats my perspective...I know there will be haters who will rag me if Houston does not cover the 6.5 or if UTSA pulls the upset...I am calling my shot...Take it or leave it! GL this season. I enjoy reading your insightful posts...

You make very good points… Even though I’m defending UTSA I’ll most likely go Houston… it’s just I put a lot of weight on coaching… QB play… offensive weapons and experience to stay in an important game at home.. I just hate going against experience and heart… but the talent will most likely wear them down.. I think I also have a small bias against Holgerson.. just seems like he’s on the brink every year.. this banter is great though… helps us with our picks!

Wow - where TF is all this Dana Holgorsen man love coming from? ......
You hated him before - one good year, and now they have arrived! I see no mention of a road game with Texas Tech on deck .... which suggests they might not be FULLY FOCUSED on UTSA - which might be a problem - TTech a big game for DH
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.

BA - Holgorson is not thinking about Tech with a less than a TD spread against UTSA...He has been around the block enough to know, that if his team is not 100% prepared and focussed, they could go down against upstart UTSA...I am betting that he and his team will be focussed...He will address Tech next week...According to Steele, there is a 5 pt difference between Tech (116) and UTSA (111) in the power ranking...Houston has bigger goals than revenge, and trying to impress Tech who has a new coach...As I pointed out, they have an opp to be this year's Cinci, which may not guarantee them a CFP birth, going undefeated, and doing so impressively, will almost guarantee them a NYD Bowl...as the top non Power 5...A loss or a half assed 3-4 point win against CUSA UTSA is not going to impress anyone...and their goal of a NYD Bowl and AAC Championship will take a hit, even if before the season gets going...And do you and "Combato" ;) honestly think that Houston is going to show up in Lubbock after a half assed showing against a respectable UTSA...That't not how it works...This is not a sandwich game, this UTSA game will be part of the preparation to ramp up, so they do I have a shot of beating Tech in Lubbock and exacting revenge...UTSA is a stepping stone to work out the kinks, get a good win and refine discipline so they can beat Tech which Steele has capped at about a pick...If it were a sandwich situation, perhaps...This is a ramp, and its not like Houston is playing ULM, or UCONN or UMASS or FIU...A revenge win against Tech won't mean anything if they lose to UTSA in a half assed effort...The spread is small enough, that Houston's incremental advantage to win an comfortably cover this modest spread...Holgorson's a loony tune kook, and you know Tech is on the back of his mind, but I think he has bigger fish to fry than Tech, and his team will have focus in week 1...At least that is my perspective...

Great job guys, breakdowns and yes, even opinions, what the Forum is designed for, so many threads have gotten away from that, it's refreshing. This game instantly got my attention now and I certainly will be looking at it much closer. Best of luck to all this season!

Thanks for all the feedback . its great to get other opinions on the game. Traylor scares me as a coach. But again think his Roadrunner defense is going to have problems vs Cougs. I also think they start the season 0-3 losing to Army and Texas next and then running the table .. Traylor is recruiting some talent in the state of Texas because of his connections as a HS coach there. . He is recruiting 2 star athletes and making them 3 or 4 stars. Everyone in Texas now knows UTSA is for real. They are not sneaking up on anybody . Their offense is formidable with all the Texas schools . But in its last 3 games they gave up 45,41, and 38 on defense, to North Texas,WKU and San Diego St. Think that was season highs for North Texas and WKU I think? Army game is another matter. Two years ago I was at the Army game in the Alomodome . UTSA was a +9.5 underdog and I knew Army very well I lost backing UTSA when Army won 28-16. A few years before Army beat them 31-13. UTSA will not stop Army's ground attack. But don't want to get to far ahead,.. Army will pound the ball and play clock control and Roadrunners have no chance .. Not sure of that line yet. The Tune to Dell combo will be tough for anybody to stop. good luck appreciate everyone's take and opinions on this game. Agree with Russo about the breakdowns and opinions in the forum

The problem with letdowns / lookahead spots, for the individual or team, AND handicappers UNDERSTANDING how this will affect their performance - is that is is a function of our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND. We all think we are in total control - but actually we are not, at all.
Meaning you just can't say "I WILL NOT LOOK-AHEAD TO ALABAMA ! I WILL FOCUS 100% OF MY ENERGY ON SUCK AZZ ULAMON !!"
You knuckleheads tickle me every year - saying "oh they'll be FIRED UP man, this game is important too!!!". The problem is PRACTICE, and preparation. Longhorns will run on the field vs the mighty Warhawks fired up like crazy - but there is no way in hell their prep time will be as productive as the week before BAMA. Same here to a lesser degree - Holgorsen / Cougs are now a 'BIG12' team - it' slight, but they don't see UTSA as someone that can beat them. It's a LONG year - teams simply don't go 100% all week, every week - Monday - Saturday.
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.

BA - in all due respect, keep your comments focussed on the merits of the game, and not on other posters...Everyone has skeletons, eh?

I never personalize anything - however if the shoe fits ....
Here's how this forum thing works - we all pitch in our thoughts - we ALL can learn here from someone/ anyone really. There is never any reason to take things PERSONALLY - here if UH is a great bet for you - well shiit - great. If you ever wanna grow as a handicapper - WELCOME points for the other side.
Weigh BOTH sides - make the play - move TF on. You lose? FORGET IT. Vegas ain't handing out any freebies these days - a game can go either way ....

Houston line is now -5.5 over UTSA still love the line though. Houston has a good chance of following Cincinnati 's season last year and making the final 4. Although they lost to them last year they avoid them this year and Kats lost a lot of players from last years team. Houston can run the table this year . Last yrs conference trophy runner up sits where every player see's it as a reminder of last years failure. Its there battle cry . Holgorsen has pictures of Cincinnati holding the conf trophy as a reminder again of how close they came to possibly making the final 4 playoffs. Last year on opening week Houston lost to Tex Tech then won 11 straight until the championship game. They learned an opening day loss was devastating but at the time they didn't realize it. Now they know. Cougs are deep and athletic . The Tune to Dell combo is one of the best in the country. Last year they were No 3 in the nation in rushing defense with Def Coord Belk who was under Saban at Bama for awhile before he went with Holgorson .
UTSA although loaded and has Traylor as a coach can almost match up even with Coogs on offense. Harris and his 3 wr's and OL are formidable vs anybody including Texas coming up. Even though Sincere is in the NFL he has some replacements . BUT Houston defense will be the toughest the Roadrunners see all year and last year. Last year the defense held Tulsa,Memphis Navy and Auburn to 10,13,13 and 20 points . Both teams blew away Rice but UTSA beat Memphis 31-28 and Houston beat them 31-13. I know its a different year and comparing last years scores to upcoming season can be beneficial or sometimes meaningless .
I hate going against Traylor at UTSA. He is inspiring as a coach . I love his press conferences because the players, media, students are behind him 110%. His theme story about the bull rider " Bull don't care" has everyone including me sold. His "Bull don't care " is about a bull. Bull doesn't care if the rider is an amateur or world class champion is on his back. He doesn't know if its a practice run or championship run. The bull doesn't care about the past or future. The bull only cares about the task at hand. ..bulk you off his back. Traylor wants his Roadrunners to approach the season like the bull. Forget last years 12-2 season ,conf success etc, He signed 10 Million $ contract to stay in San Antonio. Expectations are high but he wants his kids to play like the Bull regardless of Army and Texas next after Houston. I hate going against him because I love his press conferences and down to earth approach. A former Texas HS coach that won a few state titles at Gilmer Texas . This UTSA D-1 program is only 10 years old. But everyone knows the Roadrunners play like a bull and believe in themselves. I just think Coogs have such a good defense and UTSA won't be able to keep with Tune to Dell and the speed of Houston's defense .. if you get a chance watch some of Traylors press conferences on you tube. He is the kinda of coach you want to play for but hopefully the Cougars have some solid bull riders ..
