This is a very nice college football article for tomorrow's UCLA at Rice game:

College football 2012 season finally kicks off on Thursday. One of the first NCAA games set for Thursday night has UCLA visiting Rice. Let’s take look at the starting era of the Jim Mora Jr. at UCLA.

UCLA -15

The Bruins are laying more than two touchdowns at Rice on Thursday. That spread could seem a bit high for college football betting if we take into consideration the Bruins have not been a strong team during the past few years under former coach Rick Neuheisel; however, Mora brings in a new air to UCLA and the Bruins get an easy opener against Rice. Mora has the right attitude as he wants to turn UCLA into a big contender saying, “I want us to be a legit contender in five years.”

Redshirt Freshman Leads UCLA

Jim Mora Jr. is not a head coach to play it safe as he knows fans are paying to see exciting football games. He has chosen to go with Brett Hundley at quarterback this season. The redshirt freshman will be interesting to watch as he is one of those dual quarterbacks who can run and throw. He will definitely get some help in the backfield from running back Johnathan Franklin who had 976 yards and 5 TDs last season.

Rice not Going Anywhere

The Owls were 4-8 last season and this can make us think this year will not be different. Rice has been pretty bad under head coach David Bailiff in the past three years going 2-10, 4-8 and 4-8. This will be the sixth year at the helm for Bailiff with Rice and it might be his last. The major issue for Rice is a defense that allowed 33.3 points per game last season.

Game Notes

UCLA has played Rice four times since 1952 and won all the games. The Bruins has been a bad team to bet on with Rick Neuheisel as head coach. The Bruins are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 road games. The Bruins are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games. The Owls are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog. Looking at the total, the Over is 61-27 in the Owls last 88 games overall.

College Football Picks

There are almost no possibilities for Rice to win this game. We will take UCLA minus the points and bet over the total.

what do you guys think about Clemson / Auburn?  Auburn has more players returning and Clemson's lines are young. also, helps that watkins won't be playing.  I think taking Auburn +3.5 is a good play.  Auburn D should be decent this year.  Big question mark for Auburn though is QB...

It's one thing to be emotionally attached, it's another to be financially attached, and believe me I am financially attached.

I do think Michigan is being short-changed to a degree.  They have an outstanding head coach, and two outstanding coordinators.  They are coming off of an 11 & 2 season, have a lot of returnees, and by all accounts have had great summer and fall camps.  So I definitely understand the optimism emanating from Michigan backers.

My confidence rests in my belief that Alabama has a huge advantage in the trenches, that DR will not be able to consistently make plays down field with his arm thus rendering their offense one-dimensional, and my belief that Michigan's defense won't have much success stopping Alabama's offense.  I say the latter not because I think Michigan's defense is atrocious, or that I don't respect them, I say that because I think Alabama's offense is just that good.  Thus, I really don't see this game being very close when they cross the finish line.

I think Michigan will score between 0-13, and I think Alabama will score between 35-45.  I'll stick with the score prediction I've been throwing out for a month now . . . 38-6.

As I said in post #82, I completely understand why Michigan fans are so optimistic about their team.  I just don't think they are good enough, or deep enough to stay with Alabama for 4 quarters.

I'll take some of that -7 action!!!

I would lean slightly to the OVER simply because I think Alabama will get into the upper 30s by themselves.  I'm just not confident we'll be able to rely on much help from Michigan's defense.

I saw that.  Shocked me as well.  I have a lot of respect for Porn Stache (no person of course).  I think if Auburn has a successful season it will be because of his defense.  I think more than anything else he is trying to send a message.  He is trying to knock the chip off of the shoulders of players who have feelings of entitlement.  Honestly this makes me feel better about Auburn's chances, not worse.

Obviously I like Clemson and the UNDER.  You have some reading to catch up on in this thread.

Jimmy, thanks for sending that Clemson / Auburn thread, i think you make some really good points about the new O Coordinator and moving from spread to pro style, i think i'll pass now...   Do you have any opinion on Tenn / NC State?  i'm leaning Tenn.  SEC team will more players returning.  thoughts?

My thoughts are this game is too close to call either way.  I think it's basically a coin flip, and in coin flip situations I would lean to the points.  That said, this is an absolutely MUST WIN game for Derek Dooley and the Vols.  They have to find a way to win this game.  With muder's row of Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi St., Alabama & South Carolina on deck, Tennessee has to find a way to win this game.  The importance of this game for Tennessee and their coaching staff simply cannot be understated.

This game is not nearly as important for NC State.  After all, most people expect them to lose to SEC teams, and they come out of this game facing UConn, South Alabama & The Citadel followed by an ACC schedule.

yea, i see what you mean, must win spot and better talent in my opinion even without Rodgers.  I like Tenn bought down to -3.  This line opened at -7 at some spots, the linesmen opened it -7 for a reason.  Vols get it done.  Gotta go with the SEC school with a ton of players returning in must win spot.

LSU is stout once again, no doubt about that.  I'm real anxious to see how the Pillsbury Throw-Boy looks in that offense.  He has to be an improvement over the sideshow that was there last season.  Both teams should be undefeated heading into that November 5th match-up.  It should be another epic battle of the heavyweights.

This is a game Tennessee should win, so I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they do.  For your sake I hope they do just that.  As for me personally, I am not confident enough to wager money on the outcome.  If I was forced to wager this game I think I would tease NC State up to 10 and the total down to 45.

That said, if you really need Friday action, I think Michigan State and the 1st half UNDER in that game are better plays.

yea, i'm all over MSU friday night.   asking too much of boise to hang around in east lansing at nite against a great defense with a bunch of new players.  under makes sense too.

Jimmy I tailed you and a couple others with great success last year and so I decided to join this year. I like most of your picks but I'm on Vandy +7. But here's my question. Instead of playing your picks straight up you're parlaying with Bama and I understand the difference in payout, but if Bama goes down you've lost your whole card and just for argument sake let's say every other play would have been a winner. So instead of making a lot in that scenario, you've lost a bundle, and BTW I'm leaning Bama too. I would appreciate your response and please understand I'm not ragging on you but just trying to figure out if what you're doing makes sense.
