Just bend over and take it cause all you fucking squares are on the wrong side once again.

Alright, on to serious matters.....
To try and "peel away a layer of the onion" with regards to my thought process when it comes to this variance concept - I believe that there is a direct linear relationship to games that can be identified with a high probability of variance and the importance of handicapping.
In other words, if you knew a game was going to be decided by one score, with one team on the 5 yard line with 2 seconds left, and the spread is decided with that one play, the amount of handicapping that you put in to that game has little to no value on determining the outcome. On the other hand, if you identify a game that one team is going to cover the spread by 50 points, the handicapping in that game is extremely important. So the level of importance of picking the right side is more sustainable and more valuable in games with high variances.
This is why I concentrate on games with high variances (or games I perceive to have a good chance of having a high variance - not an exact science). I want to be involved in games where my handicapping part of the process is more valued.
Not sure if that makes sense exactly, but if not just ask....
Your specific questions:
1. Right now I only use points. A point is a point. You are probably right about the relative weighting of points, but as of now I am not that sophisticated. But I think conceptually, it would be hard to argue your point.
2. Once I find a game with high variance, thats when I know handicapping is critical.
3. I use 3 or 4 key factors, but honestly I think that is something I will keep to myself. Mostly because of my insecurity about whether they are legit or not, and I dont want to get in a longwinded statistical debate. For now, its working, and I keep improving it.
Hope that covers most of it.... I will be around...

Thx bird - I actually had MSU as the closest game to make the list but didnt. If anything, I lean to taking the points - but I wish you good luck with LSU...

I did see it and have been following it, but I just dont think the impact of a WR should have too much bearing - even though he is a great one.
Sticking with the play.....

It is absolutely goal oriented, but I also bet the whole season. And what that means is that if I hit my goal or lose my bankroll - that is a time of readjustment.
I contemplate my new financial goals, as well as adjust and address why I have been a failure or a success, and then move on. In MLB I hit my goal and stop because of personal reasons - I like having time with my family over the summer. Football is my worktime so if I hit my goal or lose my bankroll by the end of september, I am back in the game soon with a new and better plan for the current circumstances.
