Last year they had the third best recruiting class in the WAC for crying out loud.
An average college recruit gets a 3* ranking. The average star rating for Boise's current roster is slightly under 2.4. The average star ranking for Boise's current recriting class (2011) is 1.73. Four of their recruits are not even good enough to be ranked at all. In other words, they have 4 0* recruits. Last year Boise recruited Tyrone Crawford which I think is the first 4* recruit they ever gotten in the history of the program.
There are usually only about 30 5* recruits in the nation per year. Right now there are only 13 so far (that will increase as the rankings are updated). There are usually about 120 4* recruits a year. With that perspective let's see what a top 6 recruiting class looks like compared to Boise.
#1 USC 5 - 5* 14 - 4* 1 - 3* (Total 20)
#2 Florida 4 - 5* 18 - 4* 5 - 3* (Total 27)
#3 Texas 2 - 5* 19 - 4* 4 - 3* (Total 25)
#4 Auburn 3 - 5* 13 - 4* 13 - 3* (Total 29)
#5 Alabama 1 - 5* 15 - 4* 9 - 3* (Total 25)
#6 LSU 1 - 1* 15 - 4* 13 - 3* (Total 29)
# 74 Boise 0 - 5* 1 - 4* (the first in their history) 6 - 3* (Total 7)
*** Keep in mind that the NCAA maximum a team can is 25 recruits per year.
How many of those top 6 recruiting classes will Boise have to play this year? Answer: 0
How many of those top 6 recruiting classes will Alabama have to play this year? Answer: 3
Every college football program (and coach) in the country understands that the life-blood of any program is recruiting. That's why they put so much effort in that endeavor.
Now there is a lot more to college football than just recruiting rankings. Coaches have to manage and develope that talent. What these rankings show is what an outstanding job Boise's coaching staff has done in that regard. But what these ranking also show is the enormous talent gap between teams who consistently pull top 10 recruiting classes (more than half which are usually SEC teams) and teams that play in the WAC (for example). And if you think for one second that Boise could consistently play with any of these teams, I recommend you stick your finger in light socket.
BTW, what a team did in previous years has absolutely no bearing on where this year's team should be ranked. Should this year's Georgia team be ranked ahead of Florida because they beat them 3 years ago? Of course not. And if you think for a second that Oregon is remotely the same pathetic team they were in the first game of last year, stick your other hand in a fully energized light socket.
But since you bring up past results, what happened the last two times a WAC team faced a top teir SEC team? Answer: Both Boise and Hawaii (who beat Boise that year) lost by 5 TDs a piece. Why? See the recruiting analysis above.
I agree with jimmy, not saying that boise doesnt have talent, they do for sure and kellen is awesome...but...the point is they dont play anybody..the might have 2 close calls all year every year. they are far superior to the competition, but the point is there competition is weak as hell compared to the sec, big ten, pac10
yea the beat vtech,,but vtech lot to james madison at HOME, they suck this year and boise barely won
if boise played 4-5 tough teams every year they would get more respect and i wouldnt even care at all..but they dont..play auburn, georgia, alabama, florida, lsu, south carolina (6 tough games) every year and they would be mediocore.
everyone against jimmy but hes right, there is to may teams in the league that would beat boise any given day.
