Do not go 'double or nothing' when you're down a considerable amount
Do not bet on a team who has an extended losing streak in any sport with the expectation they are 'due' (i.e. the Royals a couple years back lost 19 in a row)
Never under-estimate the importance of home-field advantage
Never under-estimate the intelligence of the oddsmakers
If an underdog opens at +10 and moves to +7.5... (or some similar situation), ALWAYS bet the DOG

Do not lay -200+ juice in hockey or MLB

and in my opinion, most importantly, if you want to follow the 'sharp' money it is a large % of the time spreads in which the UNDERDOG moves closer to a FAVORED team.
I.e. Packers +2.5 are now a PK em
or
a couple of days ago MINNESOTA in college hoops were +3.5, moved to +3...
Generally speaking PUBLIC money will move a favored line from 2.5 to 3 or 6.5 to 7... but the SMART money moves the DOGS down.
That's the best advice I can possibly give. Good luck fellas!

i am 16-1 in ats picks for the nfl this season. and i picked mostly favorites. i dont think it matters if you pick underdogs or favorites, i think it is the situation for that game and the teams chemistry for that game.

A very good horse handicapper told me once u can beat a race but u can't beat the races, same goes in sports betting, i myself admit i like having action on games, but need to learn more patience. Good Thread

Best Tip I ever got was from my folks, not that they should ever know that I invest every Saturday and Sunday and that is...
Put up a bankroll and tell yourself that it's "OKAY" if this money is lost. Have a mindset that this money is fun money and if you win, GREAT!, if you lose, then life goes on and by no means should it effect you mentally or emotionally.
There are people in this world that have gambling problems and it is very sad when it effects families and children. I sit aside $2,000 every year in the fall and tell myself, "This is a hobby of mine and see what happens at the end of the year"
Also, don't FUCK with them parlays.

Great advice. I was in Vegas and talking to a local about moving up there and that I loved sports-betting and he said "Keep the money you gamble with and eat with completely separate".

take a step back and ask yourself....what do I want from this?....(why am I wagering to begin with?)...
high majority of my buddies (and most here on Covers)....are making bets just for FUN...but don't wanna admit it...> deep down they KNOW they won't win (in the long run)....yet still place VERY poorly researched wagers ....then agonize over losses....' MAN I CAN'T BELIEVE I LOST!!' * that way you don't have to take responsibility for losing....as we see all the time here...."refs screwed me....game was fixed".....HUH?
** the SOLUTION is very simple...put some WORK in....run the damn thing like a BUSINESS....and you WILL make money (over the long run)....if that's what your NEEDS are
if in it for FUN...bet only what you can REALISTICALLY afford to lose....have fun > don't sweat it....look at it as a hobby...like golf maybe....
It is better to be feared - than to be loved.

no other sport comes anywhere near the action(money takin in) that the NFL brings. Yup you're right, a lot more games in the NBA, MLB but they just don't draw the action that the NFL does. I know it's hard to beleive but I know first hand...I've spoken to the people that know...I've seen it first hand. The NFL brings out the casual bettor that does NOT bet any other sports like the nba, mlb etc.
Vegas IS the reason the NFL is such a giant business. The NFL will never admit it but they know VEGAS made them what they are today.
The rea
This is the exact reason why I call in at least one play each sunday that goes AGAINST what the "experts" all agree on.
That show is just as bought out by vegas as anything else IMHO
Great Thread!

Advice I use from not only experienced gamblers, but daytraders too:
1) have your plays clearly defined before looking for anything
2) If a play looks like it has way too many reasons to be good, order a pizza, and make it a small play; and, you may consider going the other way, too.
3) meditate on one line phrases that are true in all circumstances. For example, I use this one: "Uncertainty is the only certainty." This phrase has helped me clearly define my MLB plays for this season; I can hardly wait to see how they turn out.
4) always be honest about your losses to yourself. One way to do this is to always talk to people other than a bookie about how your bankroll is doing, and
5) a bankroll should ONLY be $ that can be afforded to do without.
Excellent Thread - thanks to anyone who reads Chow

Never too high, never too low...No matter how today goes do not let it affect your judgment the next day, be steady. They play sports 365 days a year, an opportunity to bet virtual every single day. Make a plan and follow it with consistent discipline or you have no chance in the long run...
