    2016 Record: 7-1

Going for 8 posted winners in a row here.

The more I capped this game, the more challenging it became.

Both these teams have very evident strengths and it is those strengths that got them to the tournament.

Both teams have won 12 of their last 14 games and won their conference tournament to make the 64. Both are playing their best basketball of the season and it's not even close.

And remarkably, ESPN which has matured into a network that embraces spreads and gambling, has the audacity to post that Gonzaga could be a 'Cinderella' or a 'Giant Killer' because this is a 6 vs. 11 game even though, amazingly, Gonzaga opened as a favorite! Hellllo? Anybody home??? A giant killer as a favorite against the soread. Lol.

I'll write this thread a little differently. I'll write the pros for taking both teams and then I'll provide the tipping points which puts one side over the top.

    We are taking Gonzaga.

    I. Pros for Seton Hall

    A. Isaiah Whitehead - The kid is playing off the charts right now. This the the kind of player that can take you to an Elite Eight and even a Final Four. The comparisons to Kemba Walker and the UConn championship team are legitimate.

He is going to go for at least 20 and probably 25. You can write that down. He was the Big East's most outstanding player and the Zags guards will not be able to stop him. It was because of him that the Pirates won the Big East Championship.

Now, what counters can we offer against Whitehead? Clearly, he must be neutralized somewhat. The Zags have 4 days to prepare for him. I trust, that with the Zags tournament experience (18th straight) and their coach can find ways to at a minimum, contain Whitehead enough to sneak by with a victory.

Con #1 for Whitehead - You can't gameplan against a player like this in the conference tournament which plays every night. This, a first round game, provides the maximum amount of time to strategize for Whitehead.

Con #2 for Whitehead - Sometimes he takes too many shots and worse, they are low percentage shots. When they fall for him, he's the king of the court. And they've been falling of late.

But these aren't the cozy confines of Madison Square Garden. This is in Denver in the thin air out west in the biggest of all professional tournaments. That's a ton of pressure. Worse it's against a very seasoned Zags team that will have a defense to slow him down.

He is going to have to perform at optimal levels to help Seton Hall win and that is a tall order in this spot. If his shots are not falling early, SH will be in trouble. Plus, he's never driven inside on the type of size Gonzaga has, remitting him more to an outside game where, for the season, he has shot 38%.

    B. Kadeem Carrington/Angel Delgado/Ismael Sanogo - The other three gems for SH. Carrington is a childhood friend of Whitehead so the familiarity they have with each other is invaluable. Delgado is a center and a double double machine. Sanogo is allegedly going to stop the Zags' bigs.

Con #1 - Delgado and Sanogo have never had to handle giants like Sabonis and Wiltjer of Gonzaga.

When Sabonis touches the ball, he scores. He takes 55.8% of his shots at the rim and hits 72.5% of them. He is one of the most skilled players on the team and by far the most efficient.

These guys are giants. I keep hearing the Seton Hall frontcourt has the ability to contain the Zags frontcourt but what is this based on? Wishful thinking?

The Big East is a guard heavy league and the performance of the SH frontcourt has been buffered by the fact their competition has been so inadequate there. I believe the only way they could possibly contain the Zags frontcourt is to get them in foul trouble. Otherwise, they will take you apart down low like they have virtually everyone else.

    C. Seton Hall plays great perimeter defense.

It's true. But I will provide a con later on their three point defense (a key factor in this game).

    D. Seton Halls guards will dominate the Zags guards.

In terms of talent, the Zags guards are far behind what Seton Hall has. But, and this is key, the Zags just got through St. Mary's for the conference championship, a guard heavy team so they have a blueprint for success against SH. You absolutely need conditioning in prior games to win a game like this and the Zags just got that.

I can assure you, the same is not true for Seton Hall as the Big East just doesn't have the frontcourts to replicate what Gonzaga will present.

In addition (and this is for those betting on Seton Hall solely because of the guard mismatch): Gonzaga's backcourt has heated up from the outside in the tournament:

Josh Perkins hit 46.3% of his threes in the tournament.

Kyle Dranginis shot 42.4% from 3. And Eric McClellan shot 7-13 from 3 in three games.

If the Zags pound it down low and kick it out for threes away from double teams, and hit those threes, they will be extremely hard to beat even with all the talent Seton Hall's backcourt has.

If the Zags pound it down low and kick it out for threes away from double teams, and hit those threes, they will be extremely hard to beat even with all the talent Seton Hall's backcourt has.

    II. Pros for Gonzaga

    A. The blueprint for success is there for the taking.

Not only have the Zags been conditioned to beat a guard heavy team, they need only look at Seton Hall vs. Butler to understand how they must win here.

Butler was the only team Seton Hall lost to in the last 14 games and they lost to them twice. Not surprisingly Butler is one of the only teams in the Big East that is not guard heavy (which Seton Hall wins against), playing 4 forwards and one guard. Granted they are talented as well but Seton Hall could not come up with a formula to beat them in not one but two tries (Villanova/Creighton/Xavier all play 3 guard backcourts like the Hall).

And the Zags frontcourt is far more talented than Butlers.

Not only are they talented, Wiltjer can hit threes and presents match-up nightmares.
Sabonis if he gets hot, requires a double team which can neutralize Hall's above average defense on the perimeter.

The bottom line is the Zags makeup favors them in this spot.

    B. Experience

Folks, the NCAA tournament is par for the course with this school. 18 straight. Even in a year like this one where they absolutely had to win the conference tournament and in a year where St. Mary's was better, the Zags once again will dance on Thursday.

This is a team that has really come together and will calmly stroll into Denver like they are going to Denny's for breakfast.

Conversely, Seton Hall hadn't won a conference tournament in 23 years and were  last in this tournament in 2006 (knocked out of the first round by Wichita State).

The media attention the Hall have received in Jersey is enormous and overconfidence is a legitimate worry (as a side note the Zags have an HBO documentary special that follows them). But Jersey has had nothing to cheer for in the NCAA tournament for DECADES. "Too much too soon" with no experience would worry me if I were a Hall backer.

    C. The Zags frontcourt

I already told you about Sabonis (son of the Blazer legend). For all intents and purposes, if not double teamed, he is unguardable.

Now for the other ringer in this team:

Senior Kyle Wiltjer - 6'10'. Goes for 21 and 6 a game. And he hits 3's (hit 7 of 10 against Santa Clara). Wreakes havoc all over the court. 50% from the floor. 42% from 3. 87% from the line. A mismatch nightmare for the Hall and anyone else.

Will the Hall contain them? I doubt it.
Will the Zags contain the Hall backcourt? I doubt it.

So we need tipping points for this bet and I have several.

    III. Tipping Points

    A. The tournament committee royally screwed Seton Hall

We already know about the matchup. There isn't a single team of the 64 who wants to play Gonzaga as an 11 seed.

So screwjob #1 - Seton Hall should be higher than a 6 seed and Gonzaga should be higher than an 11 too. Both teams were screwed but Hall far worse with this matchup against one of the most seasoned tourney teams there is.

Screwjob #2 - The Game is in Denver. Gonzaga travels well and will have a large contingent of faithful fans out west. Seton Hall? Not so much. Also you get the thin air and the traveling cross country for the Hall. Nice way to reward a 6 seed for a game vs. an 11.

Screwjob #3 - The game starts at 9:57 EST which is Seton Hall's body clock time. And sometimes later because of overruns. That is by far the latest Seton Hall will play a game all year, possibly ending around 12:15/12:20 bodyclock time. That's a lot to give in unfamiliar surroundings in a tournament against a rock solid Zags team who has seen this round ad infinitum. How will they respond to that? It's a worry for Hall backers.

For the Zags it starts at 6:57 bodyclock time, around the time which they start their regular home games.

If I'm backing the Hall, I HATE this. It is an unknown and could affect players

Whether this is in the line or not doesn't matter since the line is about 1 simply requiring a winner. Simply stated, it screws with Hall's ability to perform at optimal levels like in the Garden, and puts them at an immediate disadvantage.

    B. Coaching

Mark Few - 464-110 (80%!) as head coach of Gonzaga

    19-16 in the tournament

    Vs.

Kevin Willard 152-138 at Seton Hall

    FIRST tournament appearance.

To say this is a coaching mismatch is an understatement of the highest order.

    C. Whitehead and Seton Hall

Both are red hot. The worst thing you can do to a red hot team lead by a red hot player is to give them a break (and send them out west, put them in a different venue, vs. an unfamiliar opponent with a de facto home court, against a monster frontcourt they haven't faced all year).

I love the several days of complacency for Seton Hall here.

    D. Seton Hall turns the ball over

When I look for a team to back in the first round of the tournament, I look for bigs. Shooting is spotty there's a lot of nerves and the bigs underneath are right by the basket, avoiding challenging outside jumpers. The Zags have that.

Worse, Seton Hall has a penchant for turning the ball over.

You need sound play, efficient play in these opening rounds to trust your bet. The Zags have that.

Zags - 50th in the nation in turnovers.

    Seton Hall? 283!

That's not efficient folks and those TO's can lead to game winning baskets. Just to note, the Hall turned the ball over more than their opponent in every game in the Big east tournament. Yes they won every game but they also let their opponents back in all the games.

That's another problem with the Hall: they have trouble holding leads.

    E. Free throws

Again, we want efficiency. Because outside shooting is spotty in opening rounds with unfamiliar surroundings, we want easy baskets. We get them in two places: underneath and at the line.

Seton Hall doesn't thrive here. Gonzaga does.

    D1 Ranking FT%:

    Seton Hall 294th
    Gonzaga 12th

    F. Three point defense

With the Zags, you have to double team the bigs. That leaves three point shooters open. Seton Hall has stingy perimeter defense and are 38th in the nation in 3 pt defense.

    Very good!

But this isn't really about the seton hall's D.
Because the guards on Seton Hall are far superior to Gonzaga, many think Hall will eat them up, especially from the 3pt line.

So how well do the Zags defend the 3?

5th in the nation! That's a big problem for Seton Hall because they will need to rain down threes in this game.

As a sidenote, as far as shooting the three?

Seton Hall 263rd in the nation!
    Gonzaga 96th in the nation.

Zags with a big advantage here.

In summation, I see a close game that will go back and forth. If Seton Hall does not open up a big lead, they will have trouble going toe to toe with the Zags because of their efficiency and bigs. And for the record, the Hall had big leads on Xavier and Villanova in the final two tournament games and allowed both teams back in the game (Nova with the lead in the final seconds if not for a Whitehead 3 pt play to win it).

Further, the Zags have lost 7 games. Those losses have been by an average of 4 points. They are in every single game and not one team ran away with the game. Only SMU beat them by 9 and that was their largest loss deficit all year by pulling away late.

Further, Zags in 18 tournament appearances have lost in the first round....twice. A very tough team to kill in the first round under Few.

And this last point is just conjecture: I could see the blue collar Jersey Seton Hall guys getting whistled up a bit more than the alleges 'clean cut' Zags. Again, I don't make a bet on that point but it is a worry out West with a tourney darling like Gonzaga.

The line: I got it -1 when I started writing this earlier but it's ok to take it at -1.5, the line right now on 5 Dimes. I believe it was as high as -3.5 earlier this week so we get a 2/2.5pt bargain! .5 pt isn't going to push me off this game with this cap at -1.5 either. -1 is better but I can live with -1.5 too.

    The pick:

    Gonzaga -1 over Seton Hall

A nice read sir.  I am still looking at this game myself.  You make great points about the time and location and frontcourt/backcourt matchups.  Only thing stopping me is that Seton Hall has been making me $$$ the past week so hard to go against them all of a sudden.  But I do see your argument.

Very true. Seton Hall has been fantastic ATS as of late. This was a very tough one. Probably the toughest of the first rounders to cap. I understand the hesitancy if the Hall has been making you a nice buck.

Dang I'm opposite ya on this one.  I mostly discount the overall stat comparisons since Zags played in the crappy WCC.  For example- Seton Hall's opponents overall had the 12th toughest adjusted D in the nation while Zag's opponents were #156...

It would take an 11-15, 30+ pt game from Wiltjer to give Zag's a chance IMO, and Hall's not going to let that happen.

Villanova and Xavier are overrated and SH is well familiar with them. Their performances against them are not surprising (and even at that, they could have easily lost to Nova if a last second shot and one doesn't fall).

And yes, the Zags play in a weak conference and that is well known but that is one of the reasons the write-up is so long.

Their guards can contribute enough so that Wiltjer need only go for 20-21 (his averages). They have performed admirably as of late. They are getting bashed in the media but are quite efficient.

Don't forget the screwjobs above too. This team hasn't had any significant travel of any kind to compare to this.

I'd take the screwjobs above in addition to SH's lack of familiarity with any tournament experience whatsoever (both coach and players) over adjusted defense metrics.

Do you trust Whitehead to take you home (he HAS to get it done in this spot for a win)? If this guy opens the game 2-7, watch out.

    Well the guards will play...

They won't blow you away, but they will come to play.

arkansas little rock pressess and forces turn over. but purdue has huge advantage on size. how do you see this match up? thanks

Bro, I  haven't watched a single second of Ark Little Rock this year. I specialize in only a handful of teams and branch out somewhat from there. I'll always take size in the opening rounds though.

I'll only say how surprised I was at how low this line was which makes me leery about the favorite.

Hi Scal and thanks for the write up. You started out by saying the more you tried to cap the game the more challenging it became, was still your top game for tomorrow? thx again, you've helped make me a small fortune this year.
