Josh took the easy route and went with nine other friends of his graduating class to Loyalist College where he donned a lab coat and spent three years becoming a Bio-Food Technologist, which he did not get much use out in the real world. However, the experience did help him to become an ESL teacher in Taiwan, where he spent the majority of his 20s and 30s.

Q&A with Josh

How much do you bet?

I bet every day whether I'm posting or not. It's habitual. I'm a higher-volume bettor as I'd rather spend $1,000 on 10 bets I feel I have an edge on vs. two at $500 apiece. When it's football and hockey season, the cards can get a little heavy. My advice is to not get caught up in a unit battle with other bettors. At the end of the day, only you will be impacted by the wins/losses. Never be afraid or ashamed to lower your unit size. Scaling up is not for everyone.

What's your best advice to keep accounts?

Keeping your outs is a delicate dance. Sometimes it's out of your control. If you plan on doing this over a longer amount of time, be prepared to lose accounts. It's easy to look like a good bettor in the eyes of the books. Crushing CLV and betting a lot of Unders are easy signs. If you ever become elite in the industry, finding outs will be more difficult than finding winning picks.

What's your best advice for new bettors?

You are not going to "win" sports betting in one night. Get ready for the long-haul. Learn to manage your emotions. Laughing at losing bets might seem crazy, but if you are getting angry with every loss, you're not going to make it. You don't need to win 53% of your bets to be profitable. Look at plus-money markets outside of the Big 3 (moneyline/spread/total) and you can be in the black with a 45% win rate. ROI is the only thing that matters.

What are your biggest winners?

I have cashed a couple of round robins for $20,000, while my biggest straight bet was a moneyline rollover on a Blue Jays moneyline for $975 to win $1,000. Chasing those big wins is a slippery slope that can eat up a lot of profit. Don't let your cards get out of hand with parlay adds.

Straight bets or parlays?

Straight bets are the foundation of the practice. That's where it all starts and people who can straight bet every day are the ones who will last longer in the space. Parlays have their place, though. I love a good four-leg round robin with single odds of +650 or better boxed at two, three, and four for a total of 0.5 units. However, that is more during the NHL/NFL season. Baseball is a hard sport to win big, in my opinion. It's the biggest grind of those three sports.

Josh's top Covers tip

More time spent does not equal better handicapping. Use projections you trust and shop around. Whether you are a top-down or bottom-up bettor, it's not rocket science. Bet the best number, learn what's priced in, and know when to get off a bet you like if you are late to the market move.

Josh's areas of expertise

Josh specializes in NHL, NFL, and MLB betting markets, with a focus on player props. He's also been known to find his way off the beaten path and dabble in some lower-volume leagues.

Hockey

NHL betting

Josh has been betting on the fastest game on ice for a long time and loves the slow-moving markets. Stacking linemates has changed the way he bets the NHL.

Football

NFL betting

Josh loves taking big plus-money shots on NFL player milestones and TD props. Sides and totals take a back seat to pigskin player props.

Baseball

MLB betting

Josh focuses on pitcher props during the spring and summer months of the MLB season. He believes MLB betting is the longest grind of all the sports he wagers on.

Josh's memories

🚀 Big wins

My first $10,000 win came on an NHL two-point round robin parlay. The odds back then were a gift. I had already hit the first three pair of player 2+ point combos and needed one more Tage Thompson point. He whiffed on the bury but was credited for the goal which I was terrified they were going to take away. He wound up adding another point and cashed it easily. Cash 'em all!

😭 Bad beat?

Losses used to really bother me but the one that comes to mind is needing a Chris Kreider point for my biggest win at around $50,000. I had already locked up $15,000 in the stack parlay but I was having bigger dreams for a moment and doing a lot of pacing in the kitchen. I wasn't watching the game and just seeing the NHL app points come in. The Rangers scored two more times and I don't think I'll get that type of excitement that turned to disappointment back ever again.

Stints at Amherst News and the Cape Breton Post helped sharpen his skills in a newsroom setting, while working for MSVU and Dalhousies athletic departments landed Kyle in his comfort zone. Kyle has been an avid bettor for over five years, starting with just one Sports Interaction account before discovering both the beauty and importance of price shopping. bet365 and Pinnacle are his go to books, but accounts at 10+ sportsbooks give him an array of options. Rusty will bet on anything under the sun as long as theres value and good reasoning behind it, but NHL and NFL are his two favorite leagues to watch and wager on especially with friends. Kyles biggest tip for any bettor is simple: gamble responsibly. Only bet what youre willing to lose and make sure to install a proper bankroll method to keep track of your ROI. If youre still dwelling on the amount you lost the next day, its time to decrease your spending.
