Daniel Dubois vs Trevor Bryan Picks: Unkindness of Strangers

Despite being undefeated, Trevor Bryan has built his career by beating up on lesser opponents and doesn't match up well with Daniel Dubois. "Triple D" is an overwhelming favorite, so the value is likely found in pinpointing when he ends Bryan's night.

Daniel Dubois vs. Trevor Bryan betting preview

Three fights ago, Dubois was the favorite against fellow puncher Joe Joyce in a fight many felt would be a stepping stone ahead of a major bout. It ended up being the unstoppable Joyce’s coming out party. The now 36-year-old Brit showed a chin of iron and fists of steel as he battered and stopped Dubois in 11 rounds.

Since then, Dubois reassessed his career and started training with Shane McGuigan, and the results are promising. McGuigan has kept Dubois confident and looking sharp, winning his two fights since the Joyce loss by highlight-reel knockouts inside two rounds.

It’s debatable if Bryan is a worthy challenger when comparing their resumes.

Bryan is an undefeated American with a minor heavyweight title, but he’s been ignored due to prolonged stretches of inactivity. The former Boston College linebacker showed plenty of promise as he blitzed hopeless resume boosters early in his career, but he’s chronically inactive and isn't always in fighting shape.

“The Dream” had a tougher than expected bout in his last fight against Johnathan Guidry last January, where his vaunted power was mostly absent against a resilient opponent. He’ll have to be at his best against the more refined Dubois.

With both fighters normally knocking out their opponents within three rounds, this might be less about skill and more about luck. Whoever lands their big punch first will win.

Daniel Dubois vs. Trevor Bryan boxing prediction and best bet

Prediction

There’s a reason we haven’t heard much about Bryan during a time when American heavyweights are making a comeback. He’s nothing extraordinary and has been kept afloat due to meticulous matchmaking by promoter Don King, who is desperately trying to hold on to a piece of the heavyweight title.

Losing to Joyce is not a sign of a lack of skill in Dubois. He ran into a fighter he could not hurt and could not fend off, and similar fighters will have that problem against Joyce. It doesn’t change the fact that Dubois works behind a powerful jab and excellent hand speed, and he has the kind of blunt power that usually puts people down and out.

This is a significant step-up in class for Bryan, who hasn’t done his career or his conditioning any favors by fighting so infrequently against lesser opponents. There is the typical puncher’s chance here, but based on his last few performances, it’s hard to imagine Bryan getting the jump on Dubois to land such a shot.

It’s easy to see why Dubois is the favorite here. The younger, stronger, more technically skilled fighter with excellent power shouldn’t have much of a problem overcoming a foe who probably peaked not too long after turning pro. We’re liking Dubois to continue his resurgence at Bryan’s dismay.

Prediction: Daniel Dubois to Win (-1450 at FanDuel)

Best Bet

When two power punchers face off against each other, there’s that mutual respect that keeps them honest and slows the action to a crawl. Luckily for those in attendance, there is a big enough skill gap where caution will get thrown to the wind. Dubois is going to go straight at Bryan to see how he will manage his speed, and chances are he’ll like what he sees.

The Greenwich puncher will set up a beauty of a right hand early that should drop Bryan around the second round. Bryan will charge at Dubois, but his clubbing shots will miss their mark by a mile, leaving him open to another savage shot.

Both fighters’ average time to KO is 2.8 rounds, and we’ll give Bryan an extra round here to be safe. We like Dubois to take care of business in a one-sided blowout that ends in the third.

Pick: Daniel Dubois to win in Round 3 (+410 at FanDuel)
