Considering how poor Golden State has been on the road, our Valkyries vs. Dream predictions expect Atlanta to handle business at home.

The Golden State Valkyries remain the best story of the sporting summer, only half a game outside of playoff position with two teams within a game ahead of the expansion franchise, but if they don't figure out how to be more consistent on the road, this story could fail to reach the satisfying conclusion of a postseason appearance.

The Atlanta Dream are not likely to grant that reprieve tonight. My Valkyries vs. Dream predictions and WNBA picks trust the home team mostly because the road underdog is so atrocious away from the Bay Area. Tip comes at 7:30 ET on Tuesday, July 29.

Valkyries vs Dream predictions

My Valkyries vs Dream best bet: Dream -7.5 (-110 at Caesars)

Trust the Golden State Valkyries at home. They have gone 9-3 against the spread at home this season, including 8-2 ATS since June 1. If Golden State can reach the postseason, the best atmosphere of the first two rounds will be its first home game. And it's worth remembering ahead of time, the Valkyries have sprung five outright upsets in eight games as underdogs at home. A playoff upset would be very much in play.

That success at home, however, brings value in betting against Golden State on the road. Power ratings do not appropriately weigh such success at home, in part because it defies usual explanations. My favorite theory is that WNBA players are enjoying San Francisco nightlife more than in most other cities, simply because they have never had the chance to visit the Bay Area as professionals before.

So, power ratings blandly elevate the Valkyries thanks to that home success, therefore also inflating their rating on the road. Golden State has gone 2-5 ATS in its last seven road games.

This logic argues that the road failures derive in part from the home success.

Doubting the Valkyries on the road has not been as profitable as trusting them at home this season, but both approaches have been profitable. There is no need to abandon either one yet.

Valkyries vs Dream same-game parlay (SGP)

Dream -8

Allisha Gray Over 17.5 points

Brittney Griner Over 5.5 rebounds

Very simply, doubting Golden State on the road can be comfortably done in all regards. Allisha Gray continues to be the engine behind the Atlanta Dream offense as she pursues Most Improved Player honors, and Brittney Griner figures to be a veteran presence that the Valkyries cannot quite handle tonight.

Of note: The Dream have not played a home game since early July, a 9-point win against the Valkyries in which Gray scored 24 points and Griner found five rebounds, albeit in only 19 minutes.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
