The Phoenix Mercury have hit the road for a five-game trip, but it’s been anything but smooth. Even with their Big 3 — Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Satou Sabally — finally healthy, the wins haven’t followed.

Still, it’s been Thomas doing everything she can to carry the load, and in my Mercury vs. Dream predictions, I’m betting on her impact to show up again tonight.

Before the game tips off at Gateway Center Arena, let's get into my WNBA picks for Friday, August 1.

Mercury vs Dream predictions

My Mercury vs Dream best bet: Alyssa Thomas to record a double-double (-140 at FanDuel)

Mercury has definitely been in retrograde in more ways than one. Case in point, it has been disrupting all of the good juju that the Phoenix Mercury have built before getting everyone healthy again.

Phoenix just can't seem to get it together lately, especially in road games. Five out of their last six games have been on the road, but they've only been able to secure a win in one of those contests.

Alyssa Thomas has taken her frustrations out on balling in many efforts to get the Mercury back on track. The 11-year vet has registered a double-double in three consecutive games, and I'm cashing in on her doing it again tonight against the Atlanta Dream.

The Mercury previously matched up against the Dream last Wednesday — a game where Thomas had a quiet stat line of 7 points, 11 rebounds, & 9 assists — and fell to them in defeat in their lone home game throughout the last six contests.

Thomas clearly has some redeeming to do entering this particular rematch, and she's been doing the heavy lifting with her work on the boards and her scoring. It's just a matter of the rest of the team being on the same wavelength to translate all of it into wins.

Between the Mercury being in desperation mode for a win, with a creeping Seattle Storm lurking in the shadows waiting to jump ahead of them in the standings, and their last meeting facing Atlanta leaving a bitter taste in Phoenix's mouths — I'm riding the hot hand of Thomas to finally get the thorn out of their side.

Mercury vs Dream same-game parlay (SGP)

Alyssa Thomas to record a double-double

Dream +4

Jordin Canada 6+ assists

The Dream's last three matchups have been decided by four points or less, and I expect that to be the case again tonight.

Even if it's the last thing that Alyssa Thomas does tonight, she's going to keep the Dream on their toes, especially after Atlanta gave the Mercury an 11-point loss in their last meeting.

Jordin Canada is listed as questionable for this matchup due to an illness, but my gut feeling says that she toughs it out and plays.

Canada has led Atlanta in assists in eight out of the last 1 games, so I'm taking her to keep the rhythm in her favor.
