The Atlanta Dream are playing the second half of a back-to-back, but with the playoff race heating up, there’s no time for excuses. Sitting in a position to climb the WNBA standings, this road matchup against the struggling Dallas Wings presents a key opportunity for Atlanta to prove its postseason ambitions are real.

While our Dream vs. Wings predictions aren’t fully backing Atlanta to cover, the situational edge and playoff implications can't be ignored. Expect the Dream to lean on defense and energy early despite the short rest.

Dream vs Wings predictions

My Dream vs Wings best bet: Over 166.5 (-110 at Caesars)

The Atlanta Dream’s net rating has fallen 4.9 points in July’s nine games compared to the 17 preceding it. If this slide is not righted, it will be rather hard to believe in Atlanta in the postseason.

For tonight’s concerns though, the most pertinent comparison is that the Dallas Wings’ net rating has also fallen in July’s nine games compared to the preceding 18, down 4.2 points.

In both instances, more of the fault can be assigned to their defenses, the Dream’s at No. 7 in the WNBA in July and the Wings’ at No. 12. When the only defense worse than yours is the Chicago Sky’s, you should be doubted at every turn. For that matter, Dallas is closer to Chicago in the cellar than to Connecticut at No. 11.

These slides have not led to an outright influx in Overs, the Dream cashing five Overs in nine games while the Wings have cashed six out of nine, but with these two failing defenses facing each other, a choice becomes clear.

Add to that the Dream being on the second night of a back-to-back, their fatigue is likely to show most on defense. And Atlanta knows its offense is its better path toward a win.

Paige Bueckers pick: Paige packs 3-point punch

My best bet
Paige Bueckers Over 1.5 threes (+126 at FanDuel)

The Dream’s defensive struggles can largely be tied to the perimeter. They restricted opponents’ looks better than anybody to start the season, foes chucking just 19.1 times per game from beyond the arc through June 30. In July, that has jumped to 24.9 attempts per game (No. 7 in the WNBA). Worse yet, opponents are now making 37.5% of their attempts from deep.

Giving Paige Bueckers a few good looks can be costly, particularly since she's cleared this prop in three of her last five games.

Want to see some laughably wrong analysis? From a preview of Monday’s game between the Liberty and the Wings: “The Wings have won just one of their last seven games. Bueckers aside, Dallas is not much of an upset threat. Fault the organization, the coaching, Arike Ogunbowale’s shot selection. Fault whatever you want. The reality is simple: Do not trust the Wings to exceed expectations so aggressively they spring an upset.”

Dallas won.

Ascribe that to New York looking ahead to tonight’s matchup with Minnesota, not so much that the Wings have turned a corner. In fact, we're obviously doubling down on that thought.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
