Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the betting favorite to win his second French Open title in 2025.

Alcaraz's electrifying clay game and Italian Open dominance over Jannik Sinner give him the inside track to hoist the trophy again.

While Sinner, three-time champ Novak Djokovic, and 2024 finalist Alexander Zverev are in the French Open odds chase, Alcaraz’s career and season-long clay-court dominance make him tough to beat.

Join me as I break down the favorites, sleepers, and fades for the French Open, starting Sunday, May 25.

French Open 2025 men's favorites

Who's hot

Carlos Alcaraz (+125 at bet365)

Defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz won two of the three European clay events he's entered this year, including a 7-6, 6-1 thrashing of Jannik Sinner in Rome.

A defensive grinder who turns defense into offense quicker than anyone ever has, Alcaraz's punishing forehands, reliable two-handed backhand, devastating drop shots, and improved second serve have driven his 21-4 clay-court record.

Alcaraz has a tricky draw beginning with Kei Nishikori. He could meet former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Round of 16, with a potential quarterfinal matchup with two-time finalist Casper Ruud.

Jannik Sinner (+210 at FanDuel)

Jannik Sinner narrowed Alcaraz’s stranglehold on the French Open odds by reaching the Rome final in his first event since serving a three-month doping ban.

He’s one of the few with enough variety, rally tolerance, and booming serve to dethrone his Spanish rival, but he’s also lost eight of nine on the dirt against players ranked in the Top 5.

Sinners' path to his maiden French Open begins with Arthur Rinderknech, Andrey Rublev, or Arthur Fils in the Round of 16, and maybe Jack Draper or Alex de Minaur in the quarters.

Who's not

Novak Djokovic (+1400 at DraftKings)

Novak Djokovic completed his “Golden Slam” with Olympic Gold at Roland Garros, but his 2025 form — there have been no clay finals this season — pales in comparison to the three-time champion’s dominant past.

The path to Grand Slam No. 25 is relatively manageable, starting with Mackenzie McDonald. Daniil Medvedev’s grinding baseline game in the Round of 16 and Alexander Zverev’s clay pedigree in the quarters pose significant tests for the out-of-form star.

Alexander Zverev (+1800 at DraftKings)

Alexander Zverev’s Australian Open loss to Sinner has derailed his 2025 campaign. This season, Zverev has one title (Munich) and has struggled to reach the quarters in several events.

Zverev should have an easier time than Joker does of reaching the quarters. He’ll open with Leaner Tien, with potentially Felix Auger-Aliassime and Francisco Cerundolo the only ones preventing him from a potential quarterfinal with the three-time champ.

French Open 2025 men's sleepers

Players to watch

Casper Ruud (+2800 at DraftKings)

Two-time finalist Casper Ruud enters the 2025 French Open after a solid quarterfinal appearance in Rome and a Madrid Open title on his mantle.

Ruud has Alcaraz in the quarters, but the Norwegian has a relatively clear path to a quarterfinal encounter with his Spanish rival. Nuno Borges in the second, Karen Khachanov or Rome semifinalist Tommy Paul in the Round of 16, then a chance to improve his 1-4 record vs. Carlos.

Taylor Fritz (+10000 at bet365)

It's been 26 years since an American has won here, but Taylor Fritz and his versatile game have a chance at a quarterfinal collision course with Monte Carlo finalist Lorenzo Musetti.

Fritz has a manageable draw beginning with Daniel Altmaier. He will likely coast until a potential Round of 16 encounter with either Frances Tiafoe or Sebi Korda. Then, he will have a shot at his first clay court victory over Musetti in a physically challenging quarterfinal matchup for both men.

Jack Draper (+4000 at DraftKings)

Madrid finalist and Rome quarterfinalist Jack Draper has proven that he can win on this surface, and his monster lefty serve and forehand could land him a spot in the quarters and beyond.

Draper opens with Mattia Bellucci, and then it's a straight shot to a potential third-round battle with Hubert Hurkacz or possibly teen sensation João Fonseca. Draper is 1-4 lifetime against potential Round of 16 opponent Alex de Minaur and 1-1 against possible quarterfinalist Jannik Sinner, but none of the meetings have been on clay.

Long shots to avoid

Sebastian Baez (+30000 at Caesars)

Sebastian Baez boasts six career clay court titles, including an incredible March-April run that culminated in three consecutive finals, capped by a title in Rio.

Baez is a streaky fella, but also one of five with double-digit victories this season on the dirt. He’s currently dropped seven of eight and likely bothered by a lingering knee issue suffered in Rio.

The Argentine and his bazooka forehand haven’t made it past the second round in Paris, and his cold streak, rough draw, including potential second-round opponent Tomas Machac, make Baez an easy long shot to avoid.
