Last Meeting ( Aug 3, 2011 ) LA Dodgers 0, San Diego 3
THE STORY: The Los Angeles Dodgers nearly pulled off another comeback against Colorado on Sunday but fell short, ending their five-game winning streak. Los Angeles begins a three-game series Monday at home against the San Diego Padres, who have lost four straight after winning five in a row. The Dodgers overcame a late deficit Friday and rallied twice Saturday en route to a pair of victories. They trailed by five runs Sunday and got to within 7-6 before falling to the Rockies.
TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, Channel 4 (San Diego), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Mat Latos (6-12, 3.74 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (16-5, 2.51 ERA).
Latos has just one victory in his last 10 starts but has allowed three runs or fewer in each of those. He had to settle for a no-decision at San Francisco on Tuesday despite yielding one earned run over six innings. Latos has posted a 2.45 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles but owns a 1-5 record. He is 0-2 with a 1.26 ERA versus the Dodgers this season. Kershaw has won eight of nine starts and each of his last three, during which he has allowed one run in 22 innings. The 23-year-old has captured eight straight home decisions and is 9-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 13 outings at home this year. Kershaw, who posted a complete-game victory at San Diego on Aug. 1, is 5-3 in 11 career starts against the Padres.
ABOUT THE DODGERS (62-70): Matt Kemp has 100 RBIs, one shy of his career high set in 2009. He trails Milwaukee's Prince Fielder by two RBIs for the National League lead. Andre Ethier is the subject of controversy as his quotes in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday implied the Dodgers were forcing him to play despite his telling them he was battling a knee injury. Prior to Sunday's loss in which he was kept out of the lineup, Ethier tried to reverse field, saying he never told team officials he was too injured to play. He even claimed he was surprised he received the day off. Ethier plans to undergo knee surgery this winter.
ABOUT THE PADRES (60-74): San Diego scored a total of two runs during its three-game series against Arizona. Cameron Maybin missed his second consecutive game Sunday with a sore right wrist. Chris Denorfia is expected to join the Padres on Monday but is not ready to be activated from the disabled list. He strained his right hamstring July 31 and aggravated the injury Aug. 18 during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson.
FINAL PITCH: Two days after finding out Vin Scully would return to the broadcast booth for his 63rd season, the Dodgers reached a one-year agreement with Jamie Jarrin for his 54th year as the club's Spanish announcer. The native of Ecuador has called Dodgers games since the team moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.
