Arizona @ Philadelphia preview
Citizens Bank Park
Last Meeting ( Apr 27, 2011 ) Philadelphia 8, Arizona 4
THE STORY: Mother Nature gave Roy Halladay an unscheduled break on Sunday. Considering that the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has already logged a whopping 175 2/3 innings this season, well, he can certainly use the rest. After Monday's scheduled day off, Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies return to the diamond to face the fellow division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Major league-leading Philadelphia has won 13 of its last 15, while NL West-leading Arizona will vie for its season high-tying seventh win in a row.
TV: 7:05 p.m., ET, FSAZ (Arizona), WPHL (Philadelphia)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Josh Collmenter (7-7, 3.51 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Roy Halladay (15-4, 2.51 ERA).
After earning early exits in his previous two outings, Collmenter righted the ship against the Houston Astros on Wednesday. The 25-year-old rookie yielded two runs on four hits over seven innings to even his record. Collmenter has faced the Phillies earlier this season, tossing one scoreless inning of relief in the Diamondbacks' 8-4 loss on April 27.
Halladay will vie for a season-high fifth straight win and NL-best 16th victory when he faces the Diamondbacks. The 34-year-old hurler hasn't pitched since last Monday, permitting one run on nine hits in a 5-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his career against Arizona, Halladay has won all three starts β with a complete-game gem to boot.
ABOUT THE DIAMONDBACKS (68-53): Arizona begins a 10-game road trip in the City of Brotherly Love before visiting NL East foes Atlanta and Washington. A daunting task to be certain, but the Diamondbacks took two of three against the Phillies in April and swept an abbreviated series versus the Braves in May. Ryan Roberts has collected 21 hits in his last 17 games β a stretch which has seen the heavily tattooed stud ascend to the leadoff position in seven of the last eight contests. Justin Upton has been torching the opposition during Arizona's winning streak, going 13-for-24 with three homers. Roberts and Upton will be facing Halladay for the first time in their respective careers.
ABOUT THE PHILLIES (78-41): Hunter Pence has certainly been well received in Philadelphia. Since being acquired from the Astros, Pence has hit safely in 12 of 14 contests and is batting .327 with his new team. With limited opportunities, Pence is the lone Phillie to collect a hit against Collmenter. He went 1-for-3 against him while with the Astros. Slugger Ryan Howard is 6-for-11 with two homers, six RBIs and six runs scored in his last three games. Philadelphia native Dave Bush signed a minor league contract with the Phillies on Monday and was assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 31-year-old Bush posted an 0-1 mark with a 5.79 ERA in 17 appearances this season with the Texas Rangers.
FINAL PITCH: Legendary Harry Kalas will be honored with a statue prior to Tuesday's game. The statue of the late Hall of Fame broadcaster will be located on the main concourse near Harry the K's restaurant in the Citizens Bank Park complex.
