Colorado @ Los Angeles preview
Dodger Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 26, 2011 ) Colorado 1, LA Dodgers 6
THE STORY: The Los Angeles Dodgers managed to tame the Colorado Rockies, 6-1, Friday, but they were unable to corral Carlos Gonzalez. The star outfielder extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a solo home run, which also stretched his run of consecutive contests with an RBI to a franchise record-tying 10. The Rockies, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, have lost five of six on the road. Los Angeles has won four in a row.
TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FOX
PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Kevin Millwood (1-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Chad Billingsley (10-10, 4.07 ERA).
After opting out of minor-league contracts with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox earlier this season, Millwood signed a similar deal with Colorado on Aug. 8 and found himself back in the majors two days later. The 36-year-old has made three starts, including a victory over Los Angeles on Sunday in which he allowed three runs over seven innings. Millwood is 6-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 10 career outings against the Dodgers. Billingsley took the loss Sunday after yielding five runs on just three hits in 7 2/3 innings but walking five. He is winless in three starts and has not posted consecutive victories since late June. Billingsley has struggled against Colorado, going 3-7 in 15 career meetings and 1-3 this season.
ABOUT THE DODGERS (61-69): Matt Kemp, who already has 33 stolen bases, hit his 30th home run Friday, making him only the second Dodger to become a member of the 30-30 club. Kemp joined Raul Mondesi, who accomplished the feat in 1997 and 1999. Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless inning in his first appearance since July 26. Jansen had been sidelined with an irregular heartbeat. Dee Gordon, who is on the disabled list with a bruised shoulder, is expected to undergo tests this weekend that will help the Dodgers decide if he's ready to begin a rehab assignment Monday.
ABOUT THE ROCKIES (63-69): Colorado's slim playoff hopes took a serious hit as it fell 10 games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West. The Rockies got back two relievers Friday as Huston Street and Matt Lindstrom were activated from the DL. Lindstrom, who had been sidelined with right arm soreness, tossed a scoreless inning in his first appearance since Aug. 5. Colorado sent J.C. Romero and Josh Roenicke to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Gonzalez is hitting .289 (22-for-76) with nine home runs and 28 RBIs in August.
FINAL PITCH: Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully made it official Friday, announcing he would return to the booth in 2012. It will be the 63rd year with Brooklyn/Los Angeles for the 83-year-old Scully, the longest run with one club in professional sports history.
