San Francisco @ Florida preview
Sun Life Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 13, 2011 ) San Francisco 3, Florida 0
THE STORY: If the San Francisco Giants are going to win another World Series, they will need to start winning some regular-season series. Soon. The Giants will have a chance to do that Sunday when they look to snap a four-series losing streak with a win in the rubber game of their three-game set with the host Florida Marlins. Tim Lincecum and two relievers combined on a three-hitter in San Francisco's 3-0 win Saturday.
TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, CS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS Florida
PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (9-2, 2.47 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Chris Volstad (5-8, 5.58).
Vogelsong has been one of the biggest surprises in the league this season, but he stumbled Monday against his former team, Pittsburgh. He allowed five runs over five innings in a 5-0 loss, snapping a streak of six straight wins. Vogelsong has made one start and four relief appearances against the Marlins - he is 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA. He was a tough-luck loser against Florida on May 26, allowing only one run over eight innings but ending up on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss. Volstad has bounced between the majors and minors all season, and was recalled Friday to make his first major league start since July 22. The 6-foot-8 right-hander gave up four runs (three earned) over five innings in a 7-6 loss to the Mets in his last outing for the Marlins. Volstad has pitched well in three starts against the Giants, going 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA. He did not get a decision when he faced San Francisco on May 25. He allowed two runs over six innings in a 7-6 Marlins win.
ABOUT THE GIANTS (65-55): The win Saturday was only the fourth in 15 games for the Giants, who kept pace but have fallen two games behind Arizona in the National League West. Jeff Keppinger's first-inning home run Saturday was the Giants' 21st consecutive solo shot, extending their major league record. The 1914 Philadelphia Phillies held the previous record with 19.
ABOUT THE MARLINS (56-63): After snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win in Friday's series opener, the Marlins dropped to 1-8 on their homestand with Saturday's loss. They've scored only 23 runs in the nine games. The shutout was Florida's 10th of the season, and it marked the 12th time they've been held without an extra-base hit.
FINAL PITCH: The Giants recalled first baseman Brandon Belt to take the roster spot left when outfielder Andres Torres went on the disabled list. Belt has played 31 games in the majors this season, hitting .218 with two home runs and seven RBIs. He has hit .320 with eight home runs in 53 games between two minor league stops this season.
