New York @ Tampa Bay preview
Tropicana Field
Last Meeting ( Jul 19, 2011 ) NY Yankees 2, Tampa Bay 3
THE STORY: The Tampa Bay Rays had their fill of one-run losses. After falling on the wrong end of such decisions in their last two games, the Rays scratched for a pair of runs in the seventh inning to record a 3-2 triumph over the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for Tampa Bay, while New York saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. The teams have won one contest apiece in this four-game series, which continues Wednesday in Florida.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (7-7, 3.43 ERA) vs. Rays LH David Price (9-7, 3.73).
Garcia has posted an 8-2 career mark against the Rays, although he has yet to face them this season. The 34-year-old Venezuelan yielded six runs on seven hits in five innings in his last outing Friday as the Toronto Blue Jays cruised to a 7-1 triumph. Garcia had permitted nine runs in his previous five starts. Price has won three of his four career decisions versus the Yankees, although he settled for a pair of no-decisions against them this season. Price permitted three runs on five hits in six innings in his last outing as the Rays recorded a 9-6 triumph over the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
ABOUT THE YANKEES (56-38): Robinson Cano collected his team's first homer in a season-high five games when he went deep for a two-run shot in the third inning. Unfortunately for Cano and the Yankees, the offense pretty much shut down from there. Cano will look to extend his modest four-game hitting streak against Price, against whom he is 6-for-21 in his career. Brett Gardner extended his hitting streak to seven games with a pair of singles Tuesday. He also stole a pair of bases to up his total to a major-league best 29. Derek Jeter went 0-for-4 on Tuesday and remains at 3,008 hits. The captain trails Hall of Famer Wade Boggs by two for a share of 25th place all-time.
ABOUT THE RAYS (51-44): With Kyle Farnsworth pitching in three of the previous four games, Joel Peralta received the call for the ninth inning Tuesday. Peralta barely flinched as he retired the side in order to secure his first save of the season. Robinson Chirinos, who was called up from Triple A Durham on Monday, went 1-for-3 and scored the tying run in the seventh inning Tuesday. Evan Longoria continues to struggle. He went 0-for-3 on Tuesday and is 3-for-27 in his last seven games. Longoria has limited experience facing Garcia, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double. Reid Brignac collected his first RBI since June 18 with a run-scoring single in the fifth Tuesday.
FINAL PITCH: The Yankees placed righthander Sergio Mitre on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. The 30-year-old Mitre has allowed nine runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings since being reacquired by the Yankees.
