PITCHING MATCHUP: Los Angeles Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (8-3, 2.93) vs. Los Angeles Angels RH Jered Weaver (9-4 1.97). Kershaw picked up the victory over Weaver on Sunday, pitching nine strong innings, yielding two runs on six hits while striking out 11. The Dodgers’ lefty has pitched well recently, allowing just three earned runs in his last 25 innings. Kershaw hasn’t taken a loss since April 26. Weaver tossed seven innings and allowed one run against the Dodgers, but didn’t factor in Sunday's 3-2 decision. Weaver hasn’t lost since May 18 and is coming off a strong June during which he went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA.
ABOUT THE ANGELS (42-41): The Angels were among the hottest teams in baseball at the end of the June and have clawed to within two games of first-place Texas in the American League West. The Angels’ offense needs a lift, though, and the team could be one of the biggest buyers at the trade deadline. Torii Hunter left in the third inning Friday night after being hit on the left hand with a pitch; X-rays were negative.
ABOUT THE DODGERS (37-46): The Dodgers broke out the bats Friday in the series opener, pounding out 13 hits. The offense will get another boost Sunday with the return of Rafael Furcal from the disabled list. Furcal will return to shortstop, meaning rookie Dee Gordon may return temporarily to the minor leagues. Furcal hit 5-for-16 in five games during his rehabilitation stint in Class-A. Los Angeles catcher Rod Barajas, who has been on the disabled list since June 19, is slated to start a rehab assignment Sunday.
FINAL PITCH: Angels manager Mike Scioscia is 130-84 in interleague play and is one win away from tying Joe Torre’s interleague victories mark.
