Chicago @ Chicago preview
Wrigley Field
Last Meeting ( Jul 1, 2011 ) Chi. White Sox 6, Chi. Cubs 4
THE STORY: It has taken 2 1/2 months, but the Chicago White Sox have finally dug out from their horrendous start. And with a victory against the host Chicago Cubs on Saturday, the White Sox can get back to .500 for the first time since they were 7-7 on April 16. The White Sox rallied for a 6-4 victory in the series opener Friday, scoring four runs in the seventh inning on Alexei Ramirez's two-run homer and Juan Pierre's two-run triple.
TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FOX
PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Philip Humber (7-4, 2.89 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Matt Garza (4-6, 4.07). Humber posted his 10th quality start in his last 11 outings in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Washington. He allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings in his first loss since April 30, snapping his streak of five consecutive decisions won. Humber has never faced the Cubs. Garza is 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA in five starts since coming off the disabled list June 6. He has won his last two decisions and had a solid outing Monday, limiting the Rockies to three runs over 7 1/3 innings in a 7-3 win. He hasn't fared well against the White Sox, though, going 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA in five starts, including June 21 when he allowed two runs in five innings and didn't factor in the decision. Paul Konerko has given Garza problems - the slugging first baseman is 5-for-10 with two homers against him.
ABOUT THE WHITE SOX (41-42): The White Sox had the worst record in the majors when they were 11-22 on May 6, but they have won three of four and eight of 12 to get to the cusp of the break-even mark. Their chances of doing it Saturday would seem good considering they have won 14 of the past 19 meetings with their crosstown rivals. Pierre, a former Cub, has driven in the go-ahead runs in the past two games and is 10-for-23 over his past five games.
ABOUT THE CUBS (34-49): The Cubs remain the only team in the majors without a three-game winning streak after Friday's loss. One of the few bright spots recently has been third baseman Aramis Ramirez's resurgence at the plate. Ramirez hit his 300th home run Friday and nine of his 11 home runs this season have come in his past 24 games. The Cubs' injury woes continue - they placed Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list (back) Friday and activated reliever Kerry Wood, who worked a perfect inning in his first appearance since June 8.
FINAL PITCH: The White Sox have won 18 of their last 19 interleague series, including nine straight on the road.
