Last Meeting ( Jun 25, 2011 ) LA Angels 6, LA Dodgers 1
THE STORY: The finale to the first three-game installment of the 2011 Freeway Series on Sunday will feature two of baseball’s hottest arms. Jered Weaver takes the hill for the Los Angeles Angels opposite Clayton Kershaw of the host Los Angeles Dodgers as the Angels go for the sweep. The Angels extended their dominance over the Dodgers with a 6-1 victory Saturday and have won seven of the last eight meetings. The teams will meet in Anaheim for a three-game series July 1-3.
TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket, KCOP
PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Jered Weaver (9-4, 2.01 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (7-3, 3.01). After struggling in May, Weaver has been nearly unhittable in June, sporting a 3-0 record and 1.76 ERA. He has allowed only one earned run in his last 16 innings and has regained the dominance he showed when he started the season 6-0. Current Dodgers are batting .231 against Weaver, who is 2-2 in his last four starts against the Dodgers. Kershaw hasn’t lost since April 26. He is coming off his best start of the season, a two-hit shutout against the Tigers on Monday when he struck out 11. Torii Hunter has had particular trouble against Kershaw, batting .167.
ABOUT THE ANGELS (39-39): Sunday’s game will be the last road contest for the Angels before they start a 13-game homestand against the Nationals, Dodgers, Tigers and Mariners. That might not necessarily be a good thing for the Angels, though, because players such as Vernon Wells, Hank Conger and Mark Trumbo are all struggling at the plate at home.
ABOUT THE DODGERS (34-44): Already struggling at the plate, the Dodgers might have a hole to fill in their lineup while the team waits for the results of an MRI on outfielder Marcus Thames’ strained calf. Manager Don Mattingly also said before Saturday’s game that the team may not move Rafael Furcal to second base when he returns from the disabled list. Matt Kemp is one player who has been performing well at the plate in June. Kemp was batting .386 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in June entering Saturday.
FINAL PITCH: The Angels hope they will have Hunter in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale. He missed Friday and Saturday's games after he injured his ribs making a catch Wednesday against the Marlins.
