Colorado @ San Francisco preview
AT&T Park
Last Meeting ( Apr 12, 2014 ) Colorado 1, San Francisco 0
The Colorado Rockies try for consecutive victories in the same series in San Francisco for the first time since 2008 on Sunday when they visit the Giants in the finale of a three-game set. Colorado went 29-52 on the road in each of the past two seasons while compiling the worst ERA in the National League both years, but none of that mattered in Saturday's 1-0 victory as six pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Rockies to their third victory in their last 17 games at AT&T Park. "Usually if it's a one-run game here we're going the other way on it and probably lose," Adam Ottavino, who pitched a perfect seventh inning, told reporters.
San Francisco won seven of its first 11 games and its offense was a big reason - averaging 5.5 runs - before being shut out for the first time in 2014. Hunter Pence (.167 batting average this season) and Pablo Sandoval (.152) each had a hit Saturday as they try to break out of their early season doldrums. Colorado's Tyler Chatwood makes his first start after recovering from a hamstring injury in spring training and opposes Tim Hudson, impressive in winning his first two starts as a Giant.
TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (2013: 8-5, 3.15 ERA) vs. Giants RH Tim Hudson (2-0, 1.15)
Chatwood suffered the injury in his final exhibition start while running to third on a triple, but is ready to go after striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings of a rehabilitation start with Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Redlands, Calif., native enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013 and the Rockies hope he can add stability to a rotation which is struggling with injuries and/or ineffectiveness. Chatwood is 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA in six games (five starts) against San Francisco.
Hudson allowed three runs (two earned) in eight innings of San Francisco's 7-3 victory over Arizona on Tuesday after pitching 7 2/3 shutout innings against the Diamondbacks on April 2. The 38-year-old Columbus, Ga., native is 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA in five starts away from Coors Field against the Rockies. Charlie Blackmon (19-for-38 this season), is 4-for-5 against Hudson, while stars Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez are a combined 6-for-25.
WALK-OFFS
1. Hudson hasn't issued a walk in 15 2/3 innings to start the season, the longest streak by a Giants pitcher since Atlee Hammaker went 21 innings in 1983.
2. Gonzalez (.341, four homers, 13 RBIs) and San Francisco CF Angel Pagan (.404) had 10-game hitting streaks snapped Saturday.
3. Rockies RF-1B Michael Cuddyer (.386, three homers, 10 RBIs) didn't play Saturday after his 10-game hitting streak came to an end Friday.
PREDICTION: Giants 3, Rockies 2
