San Diego FC hopes to remain atop the MLS Western Conference when they travel to face Sporting Kansas City on Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting currently sit six points back of the playoffs with a match in hand, but my Sporting Kansas City vs. San Diego FC predictions believe picking up points will be difficult against a San Diego side that has taken 21 of a possible 33 points on the road this season.

My free betting picks for Saturday, August 9 break down why the visitors are likely to pick up another three points.

My Sporting Kansas City vs San Diego FC best bet: San Diego moneyline (-105 at FanDuel)

It’s been 11 matches since Sporting KC kept a clean sheet. It came back on May 17 when they played out a scoreless draw against the very same San Diego side they will face on Saturday.

But that match shouldn’t have ended scoreless. The Californian outfit posted a 1.58 to 0.05 xG advantage over Kansas City, yet couldn’t find a way past John Pulskamp, who was named Man of the Match despite having only three saves.

San Diego are heavily favored to win, and with good reason. They lead the Western Conference, have scored the second-most goals of any team in MLS, and have won four straight matches on the road in MLS play.

And while Sporting KC have the advantage of not having played in the past two weeks, I don’t think that will matter here. San Diego’s last six matches, including three in the Leagues Cup, have all been played at home. That limited travel has saved significant wear and tear on their legs.

Sporting KC average just 1.08 points per match at home, while San Diego’s 1.91 away points per match lead the West. Sporting also allows the sixth-most shots on target per 90 minutes, while earning the fifth-fewest at the other end.

Goals win matches, and San Diego are simply better in that area. Back them to get another victory on the road.

Under 3.5

Anders Dreyer to score or assist

Sporting KC have scored just three goals in their last three matches — two of which were penalties — and five of their last six outings have featured three or fewer goals. San Diego’s offensive output has dried up a bit of late, with only nine goals scored in their last seven outings. I see another cagey affair in the rematch, with a 1-0 or 2-1 result for the visitors.

Anders Dreyer assisted in two of San Diego’s three matches in the Leagues Cup. Prior to the MLS All Star break, the Danish forward had a span of seven matches with a combined 11 goal involvements. He will almost certainly be needed to help break through the home side’s defense.
