Two familiar foes from the northwest of England will square off on Sunday when Manchester United hit the road to face off with Everton.

Frank Lampard has cooled his seat a bit with successive wins in league play, while the Red Devils are hoping to reclaim the form that they had prior to going nearly a month without playing.

Both teams will hope their forward lines can find their shooting boots, with strikers returning from injury for both clubs. Will it lead to a scoring outbreak?

Find out in our Everton vs Manchester United picks and predictions for Sunday, October 9.

Everton vs Manchester United picks and predictions

I think I speak for every Manchester United fan when I say how happy I am to see Marcus Rashford back in form. After missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final, the young man received massive amounts of abuse on social media, and his form took a massive dip last season. Injuries have been a huge problem for him as well, and many wondered if he would ever reclaim his scoring prowess.

Enter Erik ten Hag. Like many other United players, Rashford has had a bit of a rebirth under the Dutch manager. After playing well in the preseason, Rashford again started slow this season. However, when he scored in the huge win against Liverpool (his first goal for the club since January), it seemed to lift a massive weight off his shoulders.

In his past six matches, the winger has found the back of the net five times, including a pair of goals against Arsenal. He’s also assisted three others in that time frame. In United’s 3-2 win over Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday, Rashford came off the bench at halftime. He turned the match around as he contributed to all three of the club’s goals, scoring their first goal and the winner while assisting a goal in-between.

Rashford has three assists in his career against Everton in 13 matches across all competitions, and ten Hag has hinted that Rashford will start at striker on Sunday. That’s important because three of the last four meetings between these two sides has seen United score a goal from the striker position.

This season, Everton have a strong defensive record, conceding just seven goals in eight Premier League matches. However, a striker has contributed to more than half of those either via goal or assist.

With Everton missing multiple defenders to injury this week, I like Rashford to continue his run of form by being the latest striker to help put one into Everton’s net.

My best bet: Rashford to score or assist (+125 at FanDuel)

Everton vs Manchester United side analysis

Manchester United are favored to win despite being on the road. They are still reeling a bit from their 6-3 thrashing at the hands of rivals Manchester City last weekend. The defeat ended a four-match winning run prior to the passing of Queen Elizabeth and the international break, and they didn’t look great midweek in Europa League.

Raphael Varane is still a question mark at the back, but Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial returned this week and could feature on Sunday. Everton have won consecutive matches in the Premier League after failing to win in their first six. They’ve moved out of the relegation zone with strong defensive output, large in part due to the strong play of Jordan Pickford.

The Toffees will be happy to see him return to the goal, but they will be without the services of four defenders this week. They will also be happy to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin possibly back in the lineup, as they’ve recorded just one goal this season from a striker.

Just one of the last six meetings at Goodison Park has ended in a draw, and Manchester United have won two of their last three visits. Everton won the last meeting in the spring, which marked just their second win in their 16 meetings in all competitions.

Everton vs Manchester United Over/Under analysis

The Under is favored in this matchup in part due to Everton’s defensive record this season. After being one of the leakiest backlines in the league a season ago, Pickford’s heroics have the club allowing the fewest goals thus far in the campaign. They’re not scoring many of their own, however, and six of their eight matches have seen two or fewer goals.

United’s back line has improved with Varane and Luisandro Martinez, but they’ve been ripped to shreds at times. The six City put past them marked the fourth time this season that they’ve conceded multiple goals in just seven matches.

They also can’t be relied on to score in bunches. They’ve scored one goal or fewer in four matches, and while they scored three against City, those came late when the match was already decided.

The last two meetings between these sides have seen two or fewer goals scored. When they face off at Goodison, three of the last four games have gone Under that total as well. 10 of Everton’s last 12 home matches have also gone Under, and the rain could impact the total as well on Sunday.
