The Buffalo Sabres earned a crucial 4-2 win over the Flyers on Friday to get within four points of playoff position and three points back of their opponent this afternoon, the Detroit Red Wings.
Tage Thompson was all over the score sheet yet again in the win, notching a goal and assist with three shots on net.
The 6-foot-6 sniper has found the back of the net in back-to-back games while notching six tallies in his last four contests dating to March 29. I’ll look for him to pick up another goal for my best bet this afternoon.
Thompson has had a disappointing campaign after setting career highs in goals (47) and points (94) last year, but he’s come on strong of late. The Sabres forward has collected 12 of his 28 goals this season in his last 13 games.
Thompson has been firing the puck at a steady rate, averaging 3.59 shots on net per game — 15th most in the NHL — but he’s been a victim of some bad puck luck this season as he’s shooting just 11.8% — four ticks lower than his scoring rate last year.
His luck seems to be turning around rapidly, though, as Thompson is scoring on more than 20% of his shots over that aforementioned 13-game span.
