Two teams in very different playoff races collide in Detroit as the Rangers, seeking the No. 1 seed, take on the Red Wings, who are scrapping just to make the postseason. Our NHL betting picks believe Artemi Panarin will power the New York attack.

Both the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings have plenty to play for when the two teams collide in Motown on Friday night.

New York has surged to the best record in the NHL and is currently fighting off the Bruins for the top seed in the East while keeping the Hurricanes at bay for tops in the Metropolitan Division.

The Wings are in a 4-way battle with Philadelphia, Washington, and the Islanders for just two Wild Card spots. They’re +120 underdogs against the Rangers in the NHL odds.

It’s a potential opening round matchup in the Stanley Cup odds — read below for my free NHL picks for Rangers vs. Red Wings on Friday, April 5.

Rangers vs Red Wings predictions

The New York Rangers are blistering down the home stretch, having reeled off six wins in their last seven, and only three losses across the previous 14. They’re the hottest team in the league in that period with 22 points and rank third in scoring at 3.93 goals per game.

New York’s special teams have been a strength too, with a powerplay clicking at 29.4% rate (third) and a penalty kill sitting at an 86.5% success rate (seventh).

If there might be a concern, it’s that the Rangers haven’t exactly been blowing teams out during this fun run. Five wins have been 1-goal contests, and they’re tied for 15th in goals against at three per game.

The Detroit Red Wings will be the more rested team, off since Monday after returning from a road trip that almost wiped them off the playoff map, dropping four straight before rebounding to top the Lightning 4-2 last time out. That must have seemed like an offensive outburst, as Detroit had mustered just five goals across its previous four games.

Defensive play has been a struggle for them for most of the year, as the Wings rank inside the Bottom 10 in goals allowed at 3.31 per game.

It will be the third and final matchup between these teams this year, and the Rangers are seeking the regular season sweep. They took both wins back in November, 5-3 and 3-2, both at MSG. It’s part of an even longer trend, with New York having won seven of the last 10 in this head-to-head.

The Blueshirts also happen to own the second-most road wins in the East (24). With their offence at a higher gear, even a desperate Detroit team can’t keep up.

Rangers vs Red Wings same-game parlay

Rangers moneyline

Artemi Panarin anytime goal

Patrick Kane anytime goal

Artemi Panarin is having himself a year. His 45 goals have crushed his previous high of 32, and at 110 points, he’s 15 points clear of his best campaign of 95 points.

He’s been on fire of late, with points in seven straight, tallying seven goals and 16 points. Panarin has also showed up against the Wings this year, with a goal in each of New York’s wins.

He’s had goals in back-to-back games 10 times this year, and he has a good chance of making that 11 come Friday.

Patrick Kane might not be the dynamo he was in his heyday with the Blackhawks, but he’s doing his part as the Red Wings battle for a playoff berth.

Kane had a goal in the win over Tampa and has lit the lamp four times in his last six games, while picking up at least a point in nine of his last 10. He hasn’t faced the Rangers since his Chicago days, but he does have four goals in his last eight against them. It’s a bit of a long shot, but the +850 juice on this SGP is worth it.
