The Detroit Lions face off against the Atlanta Falcons in NFL preseason action tonight, and you can catch the action on DAZN starting at 7:00 p.m. ET.
My Lions vs. Falcons predictions value the fact that Detroit already has a contest under its belt after playing in the Hall of Fame Game.
Here are my favorite NFL picks for this preseason clash on August 8.
Lions vs Falcons prediction
Lions vs Falcons Best bet: Lions three-way moneyline 1H (-125 at FanDuel)
The Detroit Lions were 1.5-point favorites against the Chargers in the Hall of Fame Game last Thursday and ended up getting stomped 34-7. They committed five turnovers in that contest, and quarterbacks Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker struggled.
Allen started the game and went 9-for-14 for 91 yards with a pair of interceptions. Hooker was 3-for-6 for just 18 yards and was picked off once. Hooker will start this time (with Allen expected to swap in at the half), and I expect a more efficient performance from him.
Keep in mind that Hooker also struggled in his first preseason appearance last year before playing extremely well and leading Detroit to wins in the final two preseason contests.
Having already played a game should be a significant advantage for Detroit's offense, which should click from the opening snap. On the other side, this Atlanta Falcons attack could start slow, especially with Easton Stick under center.
Stick has experience starting in the NFL, but he's a poor passer working in a new offense. He was also shaky in the preseason last year, completing 25 of 55 passes for 303 yards with three picks and five sacks.
Given the volatile nature of betting the preseason, I'm not backing Detroit on the full-game spread, especially since I'm not sold on Allen and think we could see a good effort from Atlanta's young and hungry defense.
That said, I'll gladly back the Lions to have the halftime lead before the Falcons find their footing.
