Rutgers (vs. Boston College)
Following their embarrassing 37-21 loss to UMass as a nearly 30-point favorite, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights have to pack up and head to Boston to take on the Boston College Eagles.
Rutgers enters Friday as a 3.5-point underdog against a Boston College team also coming off a Week 1 loss. The only difference? The Eagles weren't favored by 30 points against Cincinnati. They were 7.5-point underdogs.
In that 34-15 loss, the Eagles turned the ball over on the ground and through the air. Their defense also allowed the Bearcats to run right through them, giving up more than 250 yards on the ground.
Before the season, Rutgers had a lot of positives to build on, including returning talent along the offensive line and running back Antwan Raymond, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards a season ago. If the Scarlet Knights can put last week in the rearview mirror and focus on the Eagles, they have a chance to come out on top.
Last week was rock bottom. Now, it's time to climb out of that hole.
North Texas (vs. UNLV)
The UNLV Rebels have been traveling all over the globe over the last two weeks. They were on the island last week, rolling past the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 21-6. Now, they have to travel to Denton, Texas, to take on a North Texas team coming off a strong showing against the reigning national champion Indiana Hoosiers.
That is a lot of early travel for the team, for you, for anyone.
Even with this North Texas team being completely revamped after losing star quarterback Drew Mestemaker to Oklahoma State, along with other key talent, the Mean Green managed to outgain Indiana, averaging 5.5 yards per play in their 52-16 loss.
That matchup against the Hoosiers should be the perfect gut check to kick off the season and prepare this team for the remainder of the year.
Ohio State (vs. Texas)
Game of the week, as the Texas Longhorns host the Ohio State Buckeyes in a rematch of last year's Week 1 matchup, where the Buckeyes won 14-7 at home.
Despite thinking Texas' offense will be much better than it was a year ago, the Longhorns' defensive performance against Texas State, allowing nearly 350 total yards, is concerning. The Bobcats probably should have scored a lot more than seven points in that game.
We saw how well Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia prepared for Arch Manning last season. It wouldn't be a surprise if the Buckeyes defense finds a way to frustrate him once again.
I expect this Ohio State offense to come out fast to punch the Longhorns in the mouth early, silencing the home crowd, and securing back-to-back wins against Texas.
