One of the favorites to win the national championship this season kicks off its season on Saturday at home, with the Penn State Nittany Lions hosting the Nevada Wolfpack.

This should be a warm-up game for the 2nd-ranked Nittany Lions, but they will have some new faces from last year’s team that will need time to gel with the returning starters.

Find out who I like in my Nevada vs. Penn State predictions and college football picks for Saturday, August 30.

Nevada vs Penn State prediction

Nevada vs Penn State Best bet: Under 55.5 (-110)

Last year, the Nevada Wolfpack played 13 games, but went 3-10, with wins only over Troy and Oregon State in FBS games. They ranked 105th in scoring, averaging 23.1 points per game, and got shut out in their lone game against a Big 10 team at Minnesota.

Things are unlikely to get much better for them on offense, with their backup quarterback from last season taking over and losing their top four leading rushers and top two receivers. Meanwhile, the Penn State Nittany Lions' defense was ranked eighth in scoring last season, allowing 16.5 points per game.

The Nittany Lions allowed only 12 points on the road in their season opener last year at West Virginia. This will be a much lesser offense, and at home. While they did lose a massive defensive player in Abdul Carter, they are returning several other key starters and are bringing in a couple of big-time transfers.

I would be surprised if Nevada reached double digits in this game, and since quarterback Drew Allar will have almost an entirely new group of targets to throw to, I think it will take some time for Penn State to put up huge numbers on offense.

Nevada vs Penn State same-game parlay

To add to the Under, I am going to take both Penn State running backs to reach 80 yards on the ground. Last year, Kaytron Allen had seven games with 80+ yards rushing, and Nicholas Singleton had nine such games.

Last year, Nevada’s rushing defense ranked 113th, allowing 192.8 yards per game.

Our deep-ball SGP: Allar to the House!

Last season, Allar had six rushing touchdowns. The Wolfpack allowed 31 rushing touchdowns last season, and it wouldn’t be crazy for Allar to get one here.
